ਬਹੁਰਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਬਰ ਰਾਇ ਸੌ ਭੇਦ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥
bahur mantr bar raae sau bhed kahiyo samajhaae |
ਸਭਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਭਾਖਤ ਭਯੋ ਦਸਮੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੧॥
sabhaa bikhai bhaakhat bhayo dasamee kathaa sunaae |1|
Then the Minister inculcated and narrated this tenth Chritar.(1)
ਬਨਿਯਾ ਏਕ ਪਿਸੌਰ ਮੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਕੁਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
baniyaa ek pisauar mai taeh kukriaa naar |
A shopkeeper used to live in the city of Peshawar, whose wife was overrun by bad characters.
ਤਾਹਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਜਰੀ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਕਹੋ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
taeh maar taa sau jaree so mai kaho sudhaar |2|
She had killed the shopkeeper and immolated herself with his dead body. Now I am going to recite their tale:(2)
ਬਨਿਕ ਬਨਿਜ ਕੇ ਹਿਤ ਗਯੋ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
banik banij ke hit gayo taa te rahiyo na jaae |
The shopkeeper went away on a business trip.
ਏਕ ਪੁਰਖ ਰਾਖਤ ਭਈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਧਾਮ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
ek purakh raakhat bhee apune dhaam bulaae |3|
In his absence she could not control her passion and invited a person to live with her in the house.(3)
ਰੈਨਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਰਮੈ ਜਬ ਸੁਤ ਭੂਖੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
rain divas taa sau ramai jab sut bhookho hoe |
Whenever hungry, her baby cried for milk, but, day in or day out,
ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਮਾਤ ਲਖਿ ਦੁਗਧ ਹਿਤ ਦੇਤ ਉਚ ਸੁਰ ਰੋਇ ॥੪॥
preet maat lakh dugadh hit det uch sur roe |4|
She kept herself busy in love-makmg.( 4)

ਜਬ ਸੁਤ ਭੂਖੋ ਹੋਇ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ॥

ਤਬ ਮੁਖ ਸੌ ਯੌ ਜਾਰ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥
tab mukh sau yau jaar uchaarai |
Once when the baby cried hard seeking feed, her lover asked her,
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਯਾ ਕੋ ਤੁਮ ਚੁਪਨ ਕਰਾਵੋ ॥
triy yaa ko tum chupan karaavo |
ਹਮਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਕੋ ਸੋਕ ਮਿਟਾਵੋ ॥੫॥
hamare chit ko sok mittaavo |5|
‘Go, silence the child and, then, eliminate my sensual agonies.’(5)
ਉਠਿ ਅਸਥਨ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਦਯੋ ॥
autth asathan taa ko tin dayo |
ਲੈ ਅਸਥਨ ਚੁਪ ਬਾਲ ਨ ਭਯੋ ॥
lai asathan chup baal na bhayo |
The lady went and tried to breast feed him but child would not get quiet.
ਨਿਜ ਸੁਤ ਕੋ ਨਿਜੁ ਕਰਨ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
nij sut ko nij karan sanghaariyo |
ਆਨਿ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਸੋਕ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੬॥
aan mitr ko sok nivaariyo |6|
(To quieten him), she suffocated the baby with her own hands and, then, took the man out of his erotic miseries.(6)
ਬਾਲ ਰਹਤ ਚੁਪ ਜਾਰ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
baal rehat chup jaar uchaaro |
ਅਬ ਕ︀ਯੋ ਨ ਰੋਵਤ ਬਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ॥
ab kayo na rovat baal tihaaro |
Noticing the baby’s sudden stoppage of weeping, the man asked,
ਤਬ ਤਿਨ ਬਚਨ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਯੌ ਭਾਖਿਯੋ ॥
tab tin bachan tarun yau bhaakhiyo |
‘Why your child is not crying now.’
ਤਵ ਹਿਤ ਮਾਰਿ ਪੂਤ ਮੈ ਰਾਖਿਯੋ ॥੭॥
tav hit maar poot mai raakhiyo |7|
She disclosed, ‘For the sake of your pleasure I have killed my son.’(7)

ਜਾਰ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਡਰਿਯੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਮਨ ਠਾਨਿ ॥
jaar bachan sun kai ddariyo adhik traas man tthaan |
Learning the fact, he was much scared and rebuked her for doing
ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦ︀ਯਾ ਕਰੀ ਬਾਲ ਚਰਿਤ ਮੁਖਿ ਆਨਿ ॥੮॥
taa triy kee nindayaa karee baal charit mukh aan |8|
Thus to the baby.(8)
ਜਾਰ ਜਬੈ ਐਸੇ ਕ︀ਯੋ ਨਿਰਖ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਕੀ ਓਰ ॥
jaar jabai aise kayo nirakh tarun kee or |
When he reproved her action severely, she took out a sword and
ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਰਤ ਮਾਰਤ ਭਈ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਘੋਰ ॥੯॥
taeh turat maarat bhee hridai kattaaree ghor |9|
Immediately cut his head off.(9)
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਔਰ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਰ ਕੋ ਇਕ ਕੋਨਾ ਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
putr aauar tih jaar ko ik konaa mai jaae |
With the help of another person she dug out a hole in the corner and
ਮਰਦ ਏਕ ਲਗਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਖਨਿ ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਦਯੋ ਦਬਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
marad ek lag bhoom khan duhoonan dayo dabaae |10|
Buried them both in it.(10)
ਅਤਿਥ ਏਕ ਤਿਹ ਘਰ ਹੁਤੋ ਤਿਨ ਸਭ ਚਰਿਤ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥
atith ek tih ghar huto tin sabh charit nihaar |
(Incidentally,) a mendicant was there at the time, who had watched the entire episode.
ਬਨਿਕ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੧੧॥
banik mitr taa ko huto taa so kahiyo sudhaar |11|
He went and narrated the whole story to his friend, the shopkeeper.(11)

ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਬਨਿਯੋ ਘਰ ਆਯੋ ॥

ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੋ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
taa triy so yau bachan sunaayo |
Learning the fact, the shopkeeper came home and asked his wife thus,
ਜੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੋਨਾ ਖੋਦਿ ਦਿਖੈ ਹੈ ॥
jo grih konaa khod dikhai hai |
ਤਬ ਤੋ ਕੌ ਪਤਿ ਧਾਮ ਬਸੈ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
tab to kau pat dhaam basai hai |12|
‘Dig that corner and show me, otherwise I will not live in this house.’(l2)

ਜਬ ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਸੋ ਬਨਿਕ ਬਚਨ ਯੌ ਭਾਖਿਯੋ ॥
jab taa triyaa so banik bachan yau bhaakhiyo |
When the man said thus to the woman, she flew into a rage,
ਤਮਕਿ ਤੇਗ ਕੀ ਦਈ ਮਾਰਿ ਹੀ ਰਾਖਿਯੋ ॥
tamak teg kee dee maar hee raakhiyo |
Took out the sword and killed him too.
ਕਾਟਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kaatt moondd taa ko ih bhaat uchaariyo |
Decapitating him she started crying aloud,
ਹੋ ਲੂਟਿ ਚੋਰ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਧਾਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੩॥
ho loott chor lai ge dhaam ih maariyo |13|
‘The thieves raided the house and killed my husband.’(13)

ਪਤਿ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ਸੁਤ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ਧਨ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਚੁਰਾਇ ॥
pat maariyo sut maariyo dhan lai ge churaae |
‘They killed my husband they killed my son and took all our wealth.
ਤਾ ਪਾਛੈ ਮੈਹੂੰ ਜਰੌ ਢੋਲ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਬਜਾਇ ॥੧੪॥
taa paachhai maihoon jarau dtol mridang bajaae |14|
‘Now, with the beat of the drum I declare that I will become a Sati by immolating myself with him.’(14)
ਭਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਚੜਿ ਚਿਖਾ ਪੈ ਚਲੀ ਜਰਨ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ॥
bhayo praat charr chikhaa pai chalee jaran ke kaaj |
Next morning she headed towards the funeral pyre and the people
ਲੋਗ ਤਮਾਸੇ ਕੌ ਚਲੇ ਲੈ ਲਕਰਿਨ ਕੋ ਸਾਜ ॥੧੫॥
log tamaase kau chale lai lakarin ko saaj |15|
Followed, too, with firewood in their hands, to observe the spectacle.(15)
ਸੁਨਤ ਸੋਰ ਲੋਗਨ ਕੋ ਬਾਜਤ ਢੋਲ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ॥
sunat sor logan ko baajat dtol mridang |
Listening to the beats of the drums and observing the movement of
ਲਖ︀ਯੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਜੌਨੇ ਅਤਿਥ ਵਹੈ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਹੈ ਸੰਗ ॥੧੬॥
lakhayo huto jauane atith vahai chaliyo hai sang |16|
The people, that mendicant, who had seen all the happenings, came along too.(16)

ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਅਪਨੇ ਜਨ ਆਪ ॥

He Himself has saved His humble servant.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਨੋ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਏ ਸਭ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar kirapaa har har naam deeno binas ge sabh sog santaap |1| rahaau |
In His Mercy, the Lord, Har, Har, has blessed me with His Name, and all my pains and afflictions have been dispelled. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਰਸਨਾ ਆਲਾਪ ॥
gun govind gaavahu sabh har jan raag ratan rasanaa aalaap |
Sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe, all you humble servants of the Lord; chant the jewels, the songs of the Lord with your tongue.
ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਨਿਵਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਆਤਮ ਧ੍ਰਾਪ ॥੧॥
kott janam kee trisanaa nivaree raam rasaaein aatam dhraap |1|
The desires of millions of incarnations shall be quenched, and your soul shall be satisfied with the sweet, sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||
ਚਰਣ ਗਹੇ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਜਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪ ॥
charan gahe saran sukhadaate gur kai bachan jape har jaap |
I have grasped the Sanctuary of the Lord's Feet; He is the Giver of peace; through the Word of the Guru's Teachings, I meditate and chant the Chant of the Lord.
ਸਾਗਰ ਤਰੇ ਭਰਮ ਭੈ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਪਰਤਾਪ ॥੨॥੫॥੮੫॥
saagar tare bharam bhai binase kahu naanak tthaakur parataap |2|5|85|
I have crossed over the world-ocean, and my doubt and fear are dispelled, says Nanak, through the glorious granduer of our Lord and Master. ||2||5||85||

ਤਾਪੁ ਲਾਹਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰਿ ॥
taap laahiaa gur sirajanahaar |
Through the Guru, the Creator Lord has subdued the fever.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੀ ਸਾਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satigur apane kau bal jaaee jin paij rakhee saarai sansaar |1| rahaau |
I am a sacrifice to my True Guru, who has saved the honor of the whole world. ||1||Pause||
ਕਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਬਾਲਿਕੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
kar masatak dhaar baalik rakh leeno |
Placing His Hand on the child's forehead, He saved him.
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਦੀਨੋ ॥੧॥
prabh amrit naam mahaa ras deeno |1|
God blessed me with the supreme, sublime essence of the Ambrosial Naam. ||1||
ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਲਾਜ ਰਖੈ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
daas kee laaj rakhai miharavaan |
The Merciful Lord saves the honor of His slave.
ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥੬॥੮੬॥
gur naanak bolai daragah paravaan |2|6|86|
Guru Nanak speaks - it is confirmed in the Court of the Lord. ||2||6||86||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਜਾਰੋ ਦੀਪਾ ॥
satigur sabad ujaaro deepaa |
The Shabad, the Word of the True Guru, is the light of the lamp.
ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਤਿਹ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਖੁਲੑੀ ਅਨੂਪਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
binasio andhakaar tih mandar ratan kottharree khulaee anoopaa |1| rahaau |
It dispels the darkness from the body-mansion, and opens the beautiful chamber of jewels. ||1||Pause||
ਬਿਸਮਨ ਬਿਸਮ ਭਏ ਜਉ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਕਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
bisaman bisam bhe jau pekhio kehan na jaae vaddiaaee |
I was wonderstruck and astonished, when I looked inside; I cannot even describe its glory and grandeur.
ਮਗਨ ਭਏ ਊਹਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥੧॥
magan bhe aoohaa sang maate ot pot lapattaaee |1|
I am intoxicated and enraptured with it, and I am wrapped in it, through and through. ||1||
ਆਲ ਜਾਲ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੂ ਜੰਜਾਰਾ ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਭੋਰਾ ॥
aal jaal nahee kachhoo janjaaraa ahanbudh nahee bhoraa |
No worldly entanglements or snares can trap me, and no trace of egotistical pride remains.
ਊਚਨ ਊਚਾ ਬੀਚੁ ਨ ਖੀਚਾ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਮੋਰਾ ॥੨॥
aoochan aoochaa beech na kheechaa hau teraa toon moraa |2|
You are the highest of the high, and no curtain separates us; I am Yours, and You are mine. ||2||
ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ਏਕੈ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
ekankaar ek paasaaraa ekai apar apaaraa |
The One Creator Lord created the expanse of the one universe; the One Lord is unlimited and infinite.
ਏਕੁ ਬਿਸਥੀਰਨੁ ਏਕੁ ਸੰਪੂਰਨੁ ਏਕੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
ek bisatheeran ek sanpooran ekai praan adhaaraa |3|
The One Lord pervades the one universe; the One Lord is totally permeating everywhere; the One Lord is the Support of the breath of life. ||3||
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੂਚਾ ਸੂਚੋ ਸੂਚਾ ਸੂਚੋ ਸੂਚਾ ॥
niramal niramal soochaa soocho soochaa soocho soochaa |
He is the most immaculate of the immaculate, the purest of the pure, so pure, so pure.
ਅੰਤ ਨ ਅੰਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਬੇਅੰਤਾ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੮੭॥
ant na antaa sadaa beantaa kahu naanak aoocho aoochaa |4|1|87|
He has no end or limitation; He is forever unlimited. Says Nanak, He is the highest of the high. ||4||1||87||

Bilaaval, Fifth Mehl:
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
bin har kaam na aavat he |
Without the Lord, nothing is of any use.
ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਚਿ ਮਾਚਿ ਤੁਮੑ ਲਾਗੇ ਓਹ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮੋਹਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa siau raach maach tuma laage oeh mohanee mohaavat he |1| rahaau |
You are totally attached to that Enticer Maya; she is enticing you. ||1||Pause||
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਖਿਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
kanik kaaminee sej sohanee chhodd khinai meh jaavat he |
You shall have to leave behind your gold, your woman and your beautiful bed; you shall have to depart in an instant.
ਉਰਝਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਰਸ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਓ ਬਿਖੈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਖਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
aurajh rahio indree ras prerio bikhai tthgauree khaavat he |1|
You are entangled in the lures of sexual pleasures, and you are eating poisonous drugs. ||1||
ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਕੋ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਓ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਤਲੈ ਜਰਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
trin ko mandar saaj savaario paavak talai jaraavat he |
You have built and adorned a palace of straw, and under it, you light a fire.
ਐਸੇ ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਐਠਿ ਹਠੀਲੋ ਫੂਲਿ ਫੂਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
aise garr meh aitth hattheelo fool fool kiaa paavat he |2|
Sitting all puffed-up in such a castle, you stubborn-minded fool, what do you think you will gain? ||2||
ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਮੂਡ ਪਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਕੇਸ ਗਹੇ ਫੇਰਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
panch doot moodd par tthaadte kes gahe feraavat he |
The five thieves stand over your head and seize you. Grabbing you by your hair, they will drive you on.
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਅੰਧ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਦ ਮਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
drisatt na aaveh andh agiaanee soe rahio mad maavat he |3|
You do not see them, you blind and ignorant fool; intoxicated with ego, you just keep sleeping. ||3||
ਜਾਲੁ ਪਸਾਰਿ ਚੋਗ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੀ ਪੰਖੀ ਜਿਉ ਫਾਹਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
jaal pasaar chog bisathaaree pankhee jiau faahaavat he |
The net has been spread out, and the bait has been scattered; like a bird, you are being trapped.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਨ ਕਉ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਧਿਆਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੪॥੨॥੮੮॥
kahu naanak bandhan kaattan kau mai satigur purakh dhiaavat he |4|2|88|
Says Nanak, my bonds have been broken; I meditate on the True Guru, the Primal Being. ||4||2||88||
