avar siaanapaa biratheea piaare raakhan kau tum ek |1| rahaau |
All other clever tricks are useless, O Beloved; You alone are my Protector. ||1||Pause||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਤ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥
satigur pooraa je milai piaare so jan hot nihaalaa |
One who meets with the Perfect True Guru, O Beloved, that humble person is enraptured.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
gur kee sevaa so kare piaare jis no hoe deaalaa |
He alone serves the Guru, O Beloved, unto whom the Lord becomes merciful.
ਸਫਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
safal moorat guradeo suaamee sarab kalaa bharapoore |
Fruitful is the form of the Divine Guru, O Lord and Master; He is overflowing with all powers.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥੧॥
naanak gur paarabraham paramesar sadaa sadaa hajoore |1|
O Nanak, the Guru is the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord; He is ever-present, forever and ever. ||1||
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਸੋਇ ਤਿਨਾ ਕੀ ਜਿਨੑ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
sun sun jeevaa soe tinaa kee jina apunaa prabh jaataa |
I live by hearing, hearing of those who know their God.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
har naam araadheh naam vakhaaneh har naame hee man raataa |
They contemplate the Lord's Name, they chant the Lord's Name, and their minds are imbued with the Lord's Name.
ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮਾਗੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਕਮਾਵਾ ॥
sevak jan kee sevaa maagai poorai karam kamaavaa |
I am Your servant; I beg to serve Your humble servants. By the karma of perfect destiny, I do this.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਦੇਖਣੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੨॥
naanak kee benantee suaamee tere jan dekhan paavaa |2|
This is Nanak's prayer: O my Lord and Master, may I obtain the Blessed Vision of Your humble servants. ||2||
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸੇ ਕਾਢੀਅਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਾਸੋ ॥
vaddabhaagee se kaadteeeh piaare santasangat jinaa vaaso |
They are said to be very fortunate, O Beloved, who dwell in the Society of the Saints.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਨੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਗਾਸੋ ॥
amrit naam araadheeai niramal manai hovai paragaaso |
They contemplate the Immaculate, Ambrosial Naam, and their minds are illuminated.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣੇ ॥
janam maran dukh kaatteeai piaare chookai jam kee kaane |
The pains of birth and death are eradicated, O Beloved, and the fear of the Messenger of Death is ended.
ਤਿਨਾ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਣੇ ਭਾਣੇ ॥੩॥
tinaa paraapat darasan naanak jo prabh apane bhaane |3|
They alone obtain the Blessed Vision of this Darshan, O Nanak, who are pleasing to their God. ||3||
ਊਚ ਅਪਾਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
aooch apaar beant suaamee kaun jaanai gun tere |
O my lofty, incomparable and infinite Lord and Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?
ਗਾਵਤੇ ਉਧਰਹਿ ਸੁਣਤੇ ਉਧਰਹਿ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
gaavate udhareh sunate udhareh binaseh paap ghanere |
Those who sing them are saved, and those who listen to them are saved; all their sins are erased.
ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਮੁਗਧ ਕਉ ਤਾਰੇ ਪਾਹਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੈ ॥
pasoo paret mugadh kau taare paahan paar utaarai |
You save the beasts, demons and fools, and even stones are carried across.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੪॥
naanak daas teree saranaaee sadaa sadaa balihaarai |4|1|4|
Slave Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary; he is forever and ever a sacrifice to You. ||4||1||4||

Renounce the tasteless water of corruption, O my companion, and drink in the supreme nectar of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਚਾਖੇ ਬੁਡਿ ਗਈ ਸਗਲੀ ਸੁਖੀ ਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਜੀਓ ॥
bin ras chaakhe budd gee sagalee sukhee na hovat jeeo |
Without the taste of this nectar, all have drowned, and their souls have not found happiness.
ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤੁ ਨ ਸਕਤਿ ਹੀ ਕਾਈ ਸਾਧਾ ਦਾਸੀ ਥੀਓ ॥
maan mehat na sakat hee kaaee saadhaa daasee theeo |
You have no honor, glory or power - become the slave of the Holy Saints.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਕੀਓ ॥੧॥
naanak se dar sobhaavante jo prabh apunai keeo |1|
O Nanak, they alone look beautiful in the Court of the Lord, whom the Lord has made His Own. ||1||
ਹਰਿਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਚਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਸਖੀਏ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
harichandauree chit bhram sakhee mrig trisanaa drum chhaaeaa |
Maya is a mirage, which deludes the mind, O my companion, like the scent-crazed deer, or the transitory shade of a tree.
ਚੰਚਲਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲਤੀ ਸਖੀਏ ਅੰਤਿ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਵਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
chanchal sang na chaalatee sakhee ant taj jaavat maaeaa |
Maya is fickle, and does not go with you, O my companion; in the end, it will leave you.
ਰਸਿ ਭੋਗਣ ਅਤਿ ਰੂਪ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ਇਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੂਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
ras bhogan at roop ras maate in sang sookh na paaeaa |
He may enjoy pleasures and sensual delights with supremely beautiful women, but no one finds peace in this way.
ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਸਖੀਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੨॥
dhan dhan har saadh jan sakhee naanak jinee naam dhiaaeaa |2|
Blessed, blessed are the humble, Holy Saints of the Lord, O my companion. O Nanak, they meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||
ਜਾਇ ਬਸਹੁ ਵਡਭਾਗਣੀ ਸਖੀਏ ਸੰਤਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥
jaae basahu vaddabhaaganee sakhee santaa sang samaaeeai |
Go, O my very fortunate companion: dwell in the Company of the Saints, and merge with the Lord.
ਤਹ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਰੋਗੁ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
teh dookh na bhookh na rog biaapai charan kamal liv laaeeai |
There, neither pain nor hunger nor disease will afflict you; enshrine love for the Lord's Lotus Feet.
ਤਹ ਜਨਮ ਨ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
teh janam na maran na aavan jaanaa nihachal saranee paaeeai |
There is no birth or death there, no coming or going in reincarnation, when you enter the Sanctuary of the Eternal Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਿਛੋਹੁ ਨ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੩॥
prem bichhohu na mohu biaapai naanak har ek dhiaaeeai |3|
Love does not end, and attachment does not grip you, O Nanak, when you meditate on the One Lord. ||3||
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਤੜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
drisatt dhaar man bedhiaa piaare ratarre sehaj subhaae |
Bestowing His Glance of Grace, my Beloved has pierced my mind, and I am intuitively attuned to His Love.
ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਅਨਦ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥
sej suhaavee sang mil preetam anad mangal gun gaae |
My bed is embellished, meeting with my Beloved; in ecstasy and bliss, I sing His Glorious Praises.
ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਰਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਇਛ ਪੁਜਾਏ ॥
sakhee sahelee raam rang raatee man tan ichh pujaae |
O my friends and companions, I am imbued with the Lord's Love; the desires of my mind and body are satisfied.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਅਚਰਜ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੪॥੨॥੫॥
naanak acharaj acharaj siau miliaa kahanaa kachhoo na jaae |4|2|5|
O Nanak, the wonder-struck soul blends with the Wonderful Lord; this state cannot be described. ||4||2||5||
