ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਅੰਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਭਵੰਤ ਕਿਰਤ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
bhaat bhaat biant des bhavant kirat uchaar |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਗੋ ਲਗਾ ਤਜਿ ਗਰਬ ਅਤ੍ਰਿ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥
bhaat bhaat pago lagaa taj garab atr kumaar |
Touching the feet of various sages and forsaking his pride, Dutt, the son of Atri, began to wander in various countries
ਕੋਟਿ ਬਰਖ ਕਰੀ ਜਬੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿ ਵਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
kott barakh karee jabai har sev vaa chit laae |
ਅਕਸਮਾਤ ਭਈ ਤਬੈ ਤਿਹ ਬਿਓਮ ਬਾਨ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੦੯॥
akasamaat bhee tabai tih biom baan banaae |109|
When, for lakhs of years, he served the Lord single-mindedly, then suddenly, a voice came from heaven.109.

(Now begins the description of adopting the Immortal Lord as the First Guru) Speech of heavenly voice addressed to Dutt :
ਦਤ ਸਤਿ ਕਹੋ ਤੁਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਹੀਣ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
dat sat kaho tujhai gur heen mukat na hoe |
ਰਾਵ ਰੰਕ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਵਜਾ ਇਮ ਭਾਖਈ ਸਭ ਕੋਇ ॥
raav rank prajaa vajaa im bhaakhee sabh koe |
“O Dutt! I am telling you the truth that none out of the people, the king, the poor and others, gets salvation without the Guru
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਸਟ ਨ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੋ ਨਹੀ ਐਸ ਦੇਹਿ ਉਧਾਰ ॥
kott kasatt na kiau karo nahee ais dehi udhaar |
ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਤਿ ਅਤ੍ਰਿ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥੧੧੦॥
jaae kai gur keejeeai sun sat atr kumaar |110|
“You may suffer millions of tribulations, but this body will not be redeemed, therefore, O the son of Atri, you may adopt a Guru.”110.

ਐਸ ਬਾਕ ਭਏ ਜਬੈ ਤਬ ਦਤ ਸਤ ਸਰੂਪ ॥

ਸਿੰਧੁ ਸੀਲ ਸੁਬ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੋ ਨਦ ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਕੋ ਜਨੁ ਕੂਪ ॥
sindh seel subrit ko nad gayaan ko jan koop |
When this voice of heaven was heard, then Dutt, store of good qualities and knowledge and ocean of gentleness prostrating on the feet of the Lord, said,
ਪਾਨ ਲਾਗ ਡੰਡੌਤਿ ਕੈ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੀਨ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
paan laag ddanddauat kai ih bhaat keen uchaar |
ਕਉਨ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਕਹਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਤਤ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੧੧੧॥
kaun so gur keejeeai keh mohi tat bichaar |111|
“O Lord! kindly give me the crux of the matter as to whom I should adopt my Guru?”111.

Speech of the heavenly voice :
ਜਉਨ ਚਿਤ ਬਿਖੈ ਰੁਚੈ ਸੋਈ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
jaun chit bikhai ruchai soee keejeeai guradev |
ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਪਟ ਕਉ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇ ਕੀਜੈ ਸੇਵ ॥
tiaag kar kai kapatt kau chit laae keejai sev |
“Whomsoever you like in your mind, accept him as your Guru and forsaking deceit, serve him with the singleness of mind
ਰੀਝ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਤਉ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਇ ਹੋ ਬਰੁ ਦਾਨ ॥
reejh hai guradev tau tum paae ho bar daan |
ਯੌ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰ ਪੈ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਦਤ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥੧੧੨॥
yau na hoe udhaar pai sun lehu dat sujaan |112|
When the Guru is pleased, he will grant you a boon, otherwise O wise an sagacious Dutt! you will not be able to achieve redemption.”112.
ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਦਯੋ ਜਿਨੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
pritham mantr dayo jinai soee jaan kai guradev |
ਜੋਗ ਕਾਰਣ ਕੋ ਚਲਾ ਜੀਅ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਅਨਭੇਵ ॥
jog kaaran ko chalaa jeea jaan kai anabhev |
He, who in the first place gave this mantra, feeling about that Lord in his mind and accepting Him as the Guru, Dutt proceeded for getting instructions in Yoga
ਤਾਤ ਮਾਤ ਰਹੇ ਮਨੈ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨ ਬੈਨ ਨ ਏਕ ॥
taat maat rahe manai kar maan bain na ek |
ਘੋਰ ਕਾਨਿਨ ਕੌ ਚਲਾ ਧਰਿ ਜੋਗਿ ਨ︀ਯਾਸ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧੧੩॥
ghor kaanin kau chalaa dhar jog nayaas anek |113|
Though the parents dissuaded him, he did not accept the saying of anyone he assumed the garb of a Yogi and went towards a dense forest.113.
ਘੋਰ ਕਾਨਨਿ ਮੈ ਕਰੀ ਤਪਸਾ ਅਨੇਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ॥
ghor kaanan mai karee tapasaa anek prakaar |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਰੇ ਇਕ ਚਿਤ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
bhaat bhaatin ke kare ik chit mantr uchaar |
In the forest, he performed austerities in many ways and concentrating his mind, he recited various kinds of mantras
ਕਸਟ ਕੈ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਤਪ ਘੋਰ ਬਰਖ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥
kasatt kai jab hee keea tap ghor barakh pramaan |
ਬੁਧਿ ਕੋ ਬਰੁ ਦੇਤ ਭੇ ਤਬ ਆਨਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥੧੧੪॥
budh ko bar det bhe tab aan budh nidhaan |114|
When he, enduring tribulations for many years, performed great austerities, then the Lord, the treasure of wisdom, gave him the boon of ‘wisdom’.114.
ਬੁਧਿ ਕੌ ਬਰੁ ਜਉ ਦਯੋ ਤਿਨ ਆਨ ਬੁਧ ਅਨੰਤ ॥

ਪਰਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੈ ਗਏ ਦਤ ਦੇਵ ਮਹੰਤ ॥
param purakh pavitr kai ge dat dev mahant |
When this boon was bestowed upon him, then infinite wisdom penetrated within him and that great Dutt, reached the abode of that supreme Purusha (Lord)
ਅਕਸਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਬਢੀ ਤਬੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਸਾਨ ॥
akasamaatr badtee tabai budh jatr tatr disaan |
ਧਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਚੁਰ ਕੀਆ ਜਹੀ ਤਹ ਪਰਮ ਪਾਪ ਖਿਸਾਨ ॥੧੧੫॥
dharam prachur keea jahee teh param paap khisaan |115|
This wisdom suddenly extended on various sides and he propagated Dharma, which destroyed the sins.115.
ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਅਕਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀਆ ਜਿਹ ਕੋ ਕਬੈ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਸ ॥

ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਸਾ ਵਿਸਾ ਜਿਹ ਠਉਰ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥
jatr tatr disaa visaa jih tthaur sarab nivaas |
In this way, he adopted the eternal unmanifested Brahman as His first Guru, who pervades in all directions He who has spread the four major divisions of creation viz.,
ਅੰਡ ਜੇਰਜ ਸੇਤ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਕੀਨ ਜਾਸ ਪਸਾਰ ॥
andd jeraj set utabhuj keen jaas pasaar |
ਤਾਹਿ ਜਾਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀਯੋ ਮੁਨਿ ਸਤਿ ਦਤ ਸੁ ਧਾਰ ॥੧੧੬॥
taeh jaan guroo keeyo mun sat dat su dhaar |116|
Andaja (oviparous) Jeraj (viviparous), Svetaja (generated by heat and moisture) and Utbhija (germinating), the sage Dutt accepted that Lord as his first Guru.116.
ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਤ ਮਹਾਤਮੇ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਮਾਪਤੰ ॥੧॥

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਲਤੇ ਜਲਿ ਮੁਏ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਏ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
haumai jalate jal mue bhram aae doojai bhaae |
In the flames of egotism, he is burnt to death; he wanders in doubt and the love of duality.
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਆਪਣੈ ਪੰਨੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
poorai satigur raakh lee aapanai panai paae |
The Perfect True Guru saves him, making him His own.
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਲਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
eihu jag jalataa nadaree aaeaa gur kai sabad subhaae |
This world is burning; through the Sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad, this comes to be seen.
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਭਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
sabad rate se seetal bhe naanak sach kamaae |1|
Those who are attuned to the Shabad are cooled and soothed; O Nanak, they practice Truth. ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਸਫਲਿਓ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
safalio satigur seviaa dhan janam paravaan |
Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding; blessed and acceptable is such a life.
ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮੁਇਆ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁਜਾਣ ॥
jinaa satigur jeevadiaa mueaa na visarai seee purakh sujaan |
Those who do not forget the True Guru, in life and in death, are truly wise people.
ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
kul udhaare aapanaa so jan hovai paravaan |
Their families are saved, and they are approved by the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਏ ਜੀਵਦੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਾਹਿ ॥
guramukh mue jeevade paravaan heh manamukh janam maraeh |
The Gurmukhs are approved in death as in life, while the self-willed manmukhs continue the cycle of birth and death.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਏ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
naanak mue na aakheeeh ji gur kai sabad samaeh |2|
O Nanak, they are not described as dead, who are absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
har purakh niranjan sev har naam dhiaaeeai |
Serve the Immaculate Lord God, and meditate on the Lord's Name.
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਲਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥
satasangat saadhoo lag har naam samaaeeai |
Join the Society of the Holy Saints, and be absorbed in the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡੀ ਕਾਰ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
har teree vaddee kaar mai moorakh laaeeai |
O Lord, glorious and great is service to You; I am so foolish
ਹਉ ਗੋਲਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਮੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਈਐ ॥
hau golaa laalaa tudh mai hukam furamaaeeai |
- please, commit me to it. I am Your servant and slave; command me, according to Your Will.
ਹਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
hau guramukh kaar kamaavaa ji gur samajhaaeeai |2|
As Gurmukh, I shall serve You, as Guru has instructed me. ||2||

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਜਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥
poorab likhiaa kamaavanaa ji karatai aap likhiaas |
He acts according to pre-ordained destiny, written by the Creator Himself.
ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
moh tthgaulee paaeean visariaa gunataas |
Emotional attachment has drugged him, and he has forgotten the Lord, the treasure of virtue.
ਮਤੁ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਵਦਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮੁਇਆਸੁ ॥
mat jaanahu jag jeevadaa doojai bhaae mueaas |
Don't think that he is alive in the world - he is dead, through the love of duality.
ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਬਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
jinee guramukh naam na chetio se behan na milanee paas |
Those who do not meditate on the Lord, as Gurmukh, are not permitted to sit near the Lord.
ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਬਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਘਣਾ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਸਿ ॥
dukh laagaa bahu at ghanaa put kalat na saath koee jaas |
They suffer the most horrible pain and suffering, and neither their sons nor their wives go along with them.
ਲੋਕਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਉਭੇ ਸਾਸ ॥
lokaa vich muhu kaalaa hoaa andar ubhe saas |
Their faces are blackened among men, and they sigh in deep regret.
ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਵਿਸਹੀ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਸਾਸੁ ॥
manamukhaa no ko na visahee chuk geaa vesaas |
No one places any reliance in the self-willed manmukhs; trust in them is lost.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
naanak guramukhaa no sukh agalaa jinaa antar naam nivaas |1|
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs live in absolute peace; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides within them. ||1||

ਸੇ ਸੈਣ ਸੇ ਸਜਣਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
se sain se sajanaa ji guramukh mileh subhaae |
They alone are relatives, and they alone are friends, who, as Gurmukh, join together in love.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
satigur kaa bhaanaa anadin kareh se sach rahe samaae |
Night and day, they act according to the True Guru's Will; they remain absorbed in the True Name.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਸਜਣ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥
doojai bhaae lage sajan na aakheeeh ji abhimaan kareh vekaar |
Those who are attached to the love of duality are not called friends; they practice egotism and corruption.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪ ਸੁਆਰਥੀ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
manamukh aap suaarathee kaaraj na sakeh savaar |
The self-willed manmukhs are selfish; they cannot resolve anyone's affairs.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak poorab likhiaa kamaavanaa koe na mettanahaar |2|
O Nanak, they act according to their pre-ordained destiny; no one can erase it. ||2||

Pauree:
ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
tudh aape jagat upaae kai aap khel rachaaeaa |
You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself arranged the play of it.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਿ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun aap sirajiaa maaeaa mohu vadhaaeaa |
You Yourself created the three qualities, and fostered emotional attachment to Maya.
ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
vich haumai lekhaa mangeeai fir aavai jaaeaa |
He is called to account for his deeds done in egotism; he continues coming and going in reincarnation.
ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥
jinaa har aap kripaa kare se gur samajhaaeaa |
The Guru instructs those whom the Lord Himself blesses with Grace.
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਘੁਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
balihaaree gur aapane sadaa sadaa ghumaaeaa |3|
I am a sacrifice to my Guru; forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him. ||3||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਦੰਤਾ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
maaeaa mamataa mohanee jin vin dantaa jag khaaeaa |
The love of Maya is enticing; without teeth, it has eaten up the world.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
manamukh khaadhe guramukh ubare jinee sach naam chit laaeaa |
The self-willed manmukhs are eaten away, while the Gurmukhs are saved; they focus their consciousness on the True Name.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜਗੁ ਕਮਲਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
bin naavai jag kamalaa firai guramukh nadaree aaeaa |
Without the Name, the world wanders around insane; the Gurmukhs come to see this.
ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
dhandhaa karatiaa nihafal janam gavaaeaa sukhadaataa man na vasaaeaa |
Involved in worldly affairs, he wastes his life in vain; the peace-giving Lord does not come to abide in his mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
naanak naam tinaa kau miliaa jin kau dhur likh paaeaa |1|
O Nanak, they alone obtain the Name, who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||
