ਤਉ ਹੀ ਲਉ ਕੋਪ ਕੀਓ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਅਰਿ ਬੀਰ ਤਬੈ ਸੰਗ ਤੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇ ॥
tau hee lau kop keeo musalee ar beer tabai sang teer prahaare |
Till that time, in great fury, Balram discharged his arrows and killed many enemies
ਐਚਿ ਲੀਏ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ਹੀ ਬੈਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਭੂ ਪਰ ਡਾਰੇ ॥
aich lee ik baar hee bairan praan binaa kar bhoo par ddaare |
Pulling his bow he made many enemies lifeless and threw them on the ground
ਏਕ ਬਲੀ ਗਹਿ ਹਾਥਨ ਸੋ ਛਿਤ ਪੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਪ ਫਿਰਾਇ ਪਛਾਰੇ ॥
ek balee geh haathan so chhit pai kar kop firaae pachhaare |
He caught some of the mighty ones with his hands and knocked them down on the earth
ਜੀਵਤ ਜੋਊ ਬਚੇ ਬਲ ਤੇ ਰਨ ਤ︀ਯਾਗ ਸੋਊ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੀਰ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥੧੭੧੮॥
jeevat joaoo bache bal te ran tayaag soaoo nrip teer sidhaare |1718|
Those who survived from amongst them with their strength, they abandoned the war-arena and came before Jarasandh.1718.

Coming before Jarasandh, they said, “Kharag Singh has been killed in the war"
ਇਉ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਬੈਨਾ ॥
eiau sun kai tin ke mukh bainaa |
ਰਿਸਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਅਰੁਨ ਭਏ ਨੈਨਾ ॥੧੭੧੯॥

Listening to their talk, his eyes became red with ire.1719.
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਬੈ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥

ਤਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਏ ॥

He called all his ministers and said,
ਖੜਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੂਝੇ ਰਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
kharrag singh joojhe ran maahee |
ਅਉਰ ਸੁਭਟ ਕੋ ਤਿਹ ਸਮ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧੭੨੦॥

“Kharag Singh has been killed in the battlefield and there is no other warrior like him.1720.
ਖੜਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੋ ਸੂਰੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
kharrag singh so sooro naahee |
ਤਿਹ ਸਮ ਜਾਇ ਲਰੈ ਰਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
tih sam jaae larai ran maahee |
“There is no other warrior like Kharag Singh, who can fight like him
ਅਬ ਤੁਮ ਕਹੋ ਕਉਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
ab tum kaho kaun bidh keejai |
ਕਉਨ ਸੁਭਟ ਕੋ ਆਇਸ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੧੭੨੧॥
kaun subhatt ko aaeis deejai |1721|
Now you may tell me what should be done, and who should now be ordered to go?”1721.

ਤਬ ਬੋਲਿਓ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕੇ ਤੀਰ ॥

Now the minister, Sumati by name, spoke to the king Jarasandh,
ਸਾਝ ਪਰੀ ਹੈ ਅਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਉਨ ਲਰੈ ਰਨਿ ਬੀਰ ॥੧੭੨੨॥
saajh paree hai ab nripat kaun larai ran beer |1722|
“Now it is evening, who will fight at this time?”1722.
ਉਤ ਰਾਜਾ ਚੁਪ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਕਹੀ ਜਬ ਗਾਥ ॥
aut raajaa chup hoe rahio mantr kahee jab gaath |
ਇਤ ਮੁਸਲੀਧਰ ਤਹ ਗਯੋ ਜਹਾ ਹੁਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ॥੧੭੨੩॥
eit musaleedhar teh gayo jahaa hute brijanaath |1723|
On that side, listening to the minister, the king sat down silently and on this side Balram reached there where Krishna was sitting.1723.

“O the ocean of mercy! who was this king Kharag Singh? I have not seen till now such a powerful hero.1724.

“Therefore telling me his episode, remove the illusion of my mind

ਸੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨਿ ਮੋਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਰਹਿਓ ॥੧੭੨੫॥

” When Balram said this, Krishna listening to him, remained silent.1725.

ਸੁਨਿ ਬਲਿ ਯਾ ਕੀ ਗਾਥ ਜਨਮ ਕਥਾ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕਹੋ ॥੧੭੨੬॥

Then Krishna gracefully said to his brother, “O Balram! now I relate the story of the birth of the king, listen to it,1726

ਆਦਿ ਬਰਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੰਚ ਲੈ ਧਰਿਓ ਖੜਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਮ ॥੧੭੨੭॥

“Kartikeya (the six-faced), Rama, Ganesh, Shringi and Ghanshyam taking the first letters of these names, he was named Kharag Singh.1727.
ਖੜਗ ਰਮਯ ਤਨ ਗਰਮਿਤਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਦ ਘਮਸਾਨ ॥

ਪੰਚ ਬਰਨ ਕੋ ਗੁਨ ਲੀਓ ਇਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਬਲਵਾਨ ॥੧੭੨੮॥

“Shiva gave him the sword of victory in the war
ਬਹੁ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਰਮਾ ਦਈ ਤਿਨ ਬਿਮਲ ਅਮਲ ਮਤਿ ॥
bahu sundarataa ramaa dee tin bimal amal mat |
Lakshmi gave him the beauty of the body and pure intellect
ਗਰਮਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਗਨੇਸ ਸ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਰਿਖਿ ਸਿੰਘਨਾਦ ਦੀਯ ॥
garamaa sidh ganes sring rikh singhanaad deey |
Ganesh gave him the miraculous power of garima (heaviness) and the sage Shringi gave the roaring sound of the lion
ਕਰਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਘਮਸਾਨ ਇਹੈ ਘਨ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਹੇਤ ਕੀਯ ॥
karat adhik ghamasaan ihai ghan sayaam het keey |
Ghanshyam gave him the power to wage dreadful war
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੀਯੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਲਧਰ ਇਮ ਭਾਖਿਯੋ ॥
eih bidh prakaas bhoopat keeyo sun haladhar im bhaakhiyo |
ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਨਾਥ ਤੁਮ ਬਡੋ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਰਨ ਮਧਿ ਹਯੋ ॥੧੭੨੯॥
brijanaath anaath sanaath tum baddo satru ran madh hayo |1729|
“O Balram! as I have told you, the king took birth like this.” Then Balram said, “You are with the helpless people like us and you have destroyed today a very great enemy.”1729.

ਵਦੀ ਸੁ ਵਜਗਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਚਾ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
vadee su vajag naanakaa sachaa vekhai soe |
Evil actions become publicly known; O Nanak, the True Lord sees everything.
ਸਭਨੀ ਛਾਲਾ ਮਾਰੀਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabhanee chhaalaa maareea karataa kare su hoe |
Everyone makes the attempt, but that alone happens which the Creator Lord does.
ਅਗੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜੋਰੁ ਹੈ ਅਗੈ ਜੀਉ ਨਵੇ ॥
agai jaat na jor hai agai jeeo nave |
In the world hereafter, social status and power mean nothing; hereafter, the soul is new.
ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੈ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੇਈ ਕੇਇ ॥੩॥
jin kee lekhai pat pavai change seee kee |3|
Those few, whose honor is confirmed, are good. ||3||

ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਤਿਨੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
dhur karam jinaa kau tudh paaeaa taa tinee khasam dhiaaeaa |
Only those whose karma You have pre-ordained from the very beginning, O Lord, meditate on You.
ਏਨਾ ਜੰਤਾ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਵੇਕੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
enaa jantaa kai vas kichh naahee tudh vekee jagat upaaeaa |
Nothing is in the power of these beings; You created the various worlds.
ਇਕਨਾ ਨੋ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਆਪਹੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥
eikanaa no toon mel laihi ik aapahu tudh khuaaeaa |
Some, You unite with Yourself, and some, You lead astray.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਿਥੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥
gur kirapaa te jaaniaa jithai tudh aap bujhaaeaa |
By Guru's Grace You are known; through Him, You reveal Yourself.
ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
sahaje hee sach samaaeaa |11|
We are easily absorbed in You. ||11||

ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਜਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾਮਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
dukh daaroo sukh rog bheaa jaa sukh taam na hoee |
Suffering is the medicine, and pleasure the disease, because where there is pleasure, there is no desire for God.
ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾ ਹਉ ਕਰੀ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
toon karataa karanaa mai naahee jaa hau karee na hoee |1|
You are the Creator Lord; I can do nothing. Even if I try, nothing happens. ||1||
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥
balihaaree kudarat vasiaa |
I am a sacrifice to Your almighty creative power which is pervading everywhere.
ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਖਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Your limits cannot be known. ||1||Pause||
ਜਾਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
jaat meh jot jot meh jaataa akal kalaa bharapoor rahiaa |
Your Light is in Your creatures, and Your creatures are in Your Light; Your almighty power is pervading everywhere.
ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸੁਆਲੑਿਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੋ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥
toon sachaa saahib sifat suaalaiau jin keetee so paar peaa |
You are the True Lord and Master; Your Praise is so beautiful. One who sings it, is carried across.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਆ ਬਾਤਾ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੨॥
kahu naanak karate keea baataa jo kichh karanaa su kar rahiaa |2|
Nanak speaks the stories of the Creator Lord; whatever He is to do, He does. ||2||

ਜੋਗ ਸਬਦੰ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਬਦੰ ਬੇਦ ਸਬਦੰ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਹ ॥
jog sabadan giaan sabadan bed sabadan braahamanah |
The Way of Yoga is the Way of spiritual wisdom; the Vedas are the Way of the Brahmins.
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਦ੍ਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਪਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਹ ॥
khatree sabadan soor sabadan soodr sabadan paraa kritah |
The Way of the Khshatriya is the Way of bravery; the Way of the Shudras is service to others.
ਸਰਬ ਸਬਦੰ ਏਕ ਸਬਦੰ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੇਉ ॥
sarab sabadan ek sabadan je ko jaanai bheo |
The Way of all is the Way of the One; Nanak is a slave to one who knows this secret;
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥੩॥
naanak taa kaa daas hai soee niranjan deo |3|
He himself is the Immaculate Divine Lord. ||3||

Second Mehl:
ਏਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨੰ ਸਰਬ ਦੇਵਾ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਾ ਤ ਆਤਮਾ ॥
ek krisanan sarab devaa dev devaa ta aatamaa |
The One Lord Krishna is the Divine Lord of all; He is the Divinity of the individual soul.
ਆਤਮਾ ਬਾਸੁਦੇਵਸੵਿ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੇਉ ॥
aatamaa baasudevasay je ko jaanai bheo |
Nanak is a slave to anyone who understands this mystery of the all-pervading Lord;
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥੪॥
naanak taa kaa daas hai soee niranjan deo |4|
He himself is the Immaculate Divine Lord. ||4||

ਕੁੰਭੇ ਬਧਾ ਜਲੁ ਰਹੈ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੁੰਭੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
kunbhe badhaa jal rahai jal bin kunbh na hoe |
Water remains confined within the pitcher, but without water, the pitcher could not have been formed;
ਗਿਆਨ ਕਾ ਬਧਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥
giaan kaa badhaa man rahai gur bin giaan na hoe |5|
just so, the mind is restrained by spiritual wisdom, but without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom. ||5||

Pauree:
ਪੜਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰੁ ਤਾ ਓਮੀ ਸਾਧੁ ਨ ਮਾਰੀਐ ॥
parriaa hovai gunahagaar taa omee saadh na maareeai |
If an educated person is a sinner, then the illiterate holy man is not to be punished.
ਜੇਹਾ ਘਾਲੇ ਘਾਲਣਾ ਤੇਵੇਹੋ ਨਾਉ ਪਚਾਰੀਐ ॥
jehaa ghaale ghaalanaa teveho naau pachaareeai |
As are the deeds done, so is the reputation one acquires.
ਐਸੀ ਕਲਾ ਨ ਖੇਡੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਗਇਆ ਹਾਰੀਐ ॥
aisee kalaa na kheddeeai jit daragah geaa haareeai |
So do not play such a game, which will bring you to ruin at the Court of the Lord.
ਪੜਿਆ ਅਤੈ ਓਮੀਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਅਗੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ॥
parriaa atai omeea veechaar agai veechaareeai |
The accounts of the educated and the illiterate shall be judged in the world hereafter.
ਮੁਹਿ ਚਲੈ ਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ॥੧੨॥
muhi chalai su agai maareeai |12|
One who stubbornly follows his own mind shall suffer in the world hereafter. ||12||
