SWAYYA
ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਮੋ ਬਤੀਆ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੈ ਚਿਤ ਦੈ ਦੁਹ ਸ੍ਰਉਨਨ ਮੈ ਧਰੀਐ ॥
chaturaanan mo bateea sun lai chit dai duh sraunan mai dhareeai |
“O Brahma! Listen to me and hearing with your ears, adopt it in your mind
ਉਪਮਾ ਕੋ ਜਬੈ ਉਮਗੈ ਮਨ ਤਉ ਉਪਮਾ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਹੀ ਕੀ ਕਰੀਐ ॥
aupamaa ko jabai umagai man tau upamaa bhagavaan hee kee kareeai |
When the mind wishes to praise, then only the Lord should be praised
ਪਰੀਐ ਨਹੀ ਆਨ ਕੇ ਪਾਇਨ ਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਦਿਜ ਕੇ ਪਰੀਐ ॥
pareeai nahee aan ke paaein pai har ke gur ke dij ke pareeai |
“None other’s feet should be worshiped except those of God, Guru and Brahmin
ਜਿਹ ਕੋ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰ ਮੈ ਨਾਉ ਜਪੈ ਤਿਹ ਸੋ ਲਰਿ ਕੈ ਮਰੀਐ ਤਰੀਐ ॥੧੬੮੮॥
jih ko jug chaar mai naau japai tih so lar kai mareeai tareeai |1688|
He, who is worshiped in all the four ages, one should fight with him, die at his hands and ferry across the dreadful ocean of samsara through his grace.1688.
ਜਾ ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਸੇਸ ਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਖੋਜਤ ਹੈ ਕਛੁ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jaa sanakaadik ses te aadik khojat hai kachh ant na paayo |
He, whom Sanak, Sheshnaga etc. search and still they do now know His mystery
ਚਉਦਹ ਲੋਕਨ ਬੀਚ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਕ ਬ︀ਯਾਸ ਮਹਾ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਸੁ ਗਾਯੋ ॥
chaudah lokan beech sadaa suk bayaas mahaa kab sayaam su gaayo |
He, whose praises are sung by Shukdev, Vyas etc. in all the fourteen world
ਜਾਹੀ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਧੂਅ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਅਛੈ ਪਦ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jaahee ke naam prataap hoon te dhooa so prahalaad achhai pad paayo |
“And with Glory of whose name Dhruva and Prahlad attained eternal state,
ਸੋ ਅਬ ਮੋ ਸੰਗ ਜੁਧੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਿਹ ਸ੍ਰੀਧਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾਯੋ ॥੧੬੮੯॥
so ab mo sang judh karai jih sreedhar sree har naam kahaayo |1689|
That Lord should fight with me.”1689.

ARIL
ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਏ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਚਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
chaturaanan e bachan sunat chakrit bhayo |
ਬਿਸਨ ਭਗਤ ਕੋ ਤਬੈ ਭੂਪ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਲਯੋ ॥
bisan bhagat ko tabai bhoop chit mai layo |
Hearing these world, Brahma was wonder-struck and on this side the king absorbed his mind in the devotion of Vishnu
ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਕਰਿ ਬੋਲਿਓ ਬਦਨ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਕੈ ॥
saadh saadh kar bolio badan nihaar kai |
ਹੋ ਮੋਨ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਗਹਿ ਕਮਲਜ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕੈ ॥੧੬੯੦॥
ho mon rahiyo geh kamalaj prem bichaar kai |1690|
Seeing the face of the king, Brahma shouted ‘Sadhu, Sadhu’ and observing his love (for the Lord), he became silent.1690.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥
bahur bidhaataa bhoopat ko ih bidh kahiyo |
ਭਗਤਿ ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਕੋ ਤਤੁ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਤੈ ਲਹਿਯੋ ॥
bhagat gayaan ko tat bhalee bidh tai lahiyo |
Brahma said to the again, “O King! you have very nicely understood the elements of devotion,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅਬ ਤਨ ਸਾਥਹਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੀਐ ॥
taa te ab tan saatheh surag sidhaareeai |
ਹੋ ਮੁਕਤ ਓਰ ਕਰਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨ ਜੁਧ ਨਿਹਾਰੀਐ ॥੧੬੯੧॥
ho mukat or kar drisatt na judh nihaareeai |1691|
“Therefore you should go to heaven alongwith your body and getting salvation, do not look towards the side of war.”1691.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA
ਕਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਭੂਪ ਜਬ ਤਬ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਕਹ ਕੀਨ ॥
kahiyo na maanai bhoop jab tab brahame keh keen |
ਨਾਰਦ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕੀਓ ਮੁਨਿ ਆਯੋ ਪਰਬੀਨ ॥੧੬੯੨॥
naarad ko simaran keeo mun aayo parabeen |1692|
When the king did not follow the desire of Brahma, then Brahma thought of Narada and Narada reached there.1692.

ਤਬ ਹੀ ਮੁਨਿ ਨਾਰਦ ਆਇ ਗਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਇਕ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
tab hee mun naarad aae gayo tih bhoopat ko ik bain sunaayo |
On coming there, Narada said to the king,
ਚਉਦਹ ਲੋਕਨ ਬੀਚ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਤੋ ਸਮ ਰਾਜ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
chaudah lokan beech kahiyo prabh to sam raaj na koaoo banaayo |
“O king! there is no other king like you in all the fourteen worlds, this has been said by the Lord
ਤਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੀ ਮਨਿ ਤੈ ਸੁ ਭਲੋ ਕੀਯੋ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਸੋ ਜੁਧ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥
taahee te beeran kee man tai su bhalo keeyo sayaam so judh machaayo |
“Therefore you have waged your dreadful war with Krishna like heroes
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਮੁਨਿ ਕੀ ਬਤੀਆ ਸੁਨਿ ਭੂਪ ਘਨੋ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੬੯੩॥
sayaam kahai mun kee bateea sun bhoop ghano man mai sukh paayo |1693|
” Hearing the words of the sage, the king was extremely pleased in his mind.1693.

First Mehl:
ਮਿਟੀ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਕੀ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਈ ਕੁਮੑਿਆਰ ॥
mittee musalamaan kee perrai pee kumaiaar |
The clay of the Muslim's grave becomes clay for the potter's wheel.
ਘੜਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਇਟਾ ਕੀਆ ਜਲਦੀ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
gharr bhaandde ittaa keea jaladee kare pukaar |
Pots and bricks are fashioned from it, and it cries out as it burns.
ਜਲਿ ਜਲਿ ਰੋਵੈ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਅੰਗਿਆਰ ॥
jal jal rovai bapurree jharr jharr paveh angiaar |
The poor clay burns, burns and weeps, as the fiery coals fall upon it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak jin karatai kaaran keea so jaanai karataar |2|
O Nanak, the Creator created the creation; the Creator Lord alone knows. ||2||

Pauree:
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bin satigur kinai na paaeo bin satigur kinai na paaeaa |
Without the True Guru, no one has obtained the Lord; without the True Guru, no one has obtained the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
satigur vich aap rakhion kar paragatt aakh sunaaeaa |
He has placed Himself within the True Guru; revealing Himself, He declares this openly.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
satigur miliai sadaa mukat hai jin vichahu mohu chukaaeaa |
Meeting the True Guru, eternal liberation is obtained; He has banished attachment from within.
ਉਤਮੁ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
autam ehu beechaar hai jin sache siau chit laaeaa |
This is the highest thought, that one's consciousness is attached to the True Lord.
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
jagajeevan daataa paaeaa |6|
Thus the Lord of the World, the Great Giver is obtained. ||6||

Salok, First Mehl:
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਇਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
hau vich aaeaa hau vich geaa |
In ego they come, and in ego they go.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੁਆ ॥
hau vich jamiaa hau vich muaa |
In ego they are born, and in ego they die.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਇਆ ॥
hau vich ditaa hau vich leaa |
In ego they give, and in ego they take.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਖਟਿਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
hau vich khattiaa hau vich geaa |
In ego they earn, and in ego they lose.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ॥
hau vich sachiaar koorriaar |
In ego they become truthful or false.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
hau vich paap pun veechaar |
In ego they reflect on virtue and sin.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰੁ ॥
hau vich narak surag avataar |
In ego they go to heaven or hell.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਸੈ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੋਵੈ ॥
hau vich hasai hau vich rovai |
In ego they laugh, and in ego they weep.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਰੀਐ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
hau vich bhareeai hau vich dhovai |
In ego they become dirty, and in ego they are washed clean.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
hau vich jaatee jinasee khovai |
In ego they lose social status and class.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
hau vich moorakh hau vich siaanaa |
In ego they are ignorant, and in ego they are wise.
ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
mokh mukat kee saar na jaanaa |
They do not know the value of salvation and liberation.
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
hau vich maaeaa hau vich chhaaeaa |
In ego they love Maya, and in ego they are kept in darkness by it.
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
haumai kar kar jant upaaeaa |
Living in ego, mortal beings are created.
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾ ਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
haumai boojhai taa dar soojhai |
When one understands ego, then the Lord's gate is known.
ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥
giaan vihoonaa kath kath loojhai |
Without spiritual wisdom, they babble and argue.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
naanak hukamee likheeai lekh |
O Nanak, by the Lord's Command, destiny is recorded.
ਜੇਹਾ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਤੇਹਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥੧॥
jehaa vekheh tehaa vekh |1|
As the Lord sees us, so are we seen. ||1||

Second Mehl:
ਹਉਮੈ ਏਹਾ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
haumai ehaa jaat hai haumai karam kamaeh |
This is the nature of ego, that people perform their actions in ego.
ਹਉਮੈ ਏਈ ਬੰਧਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
haumai eee bandhanaa fir fir jonee paeh |
This is the bondage of ego, that time and time again, they are reborn.
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਇਹ ਜਾਇ ॥
haumai kithahu aoopajai kit sanjam ih jaae |
Where does ego come from? How can it be removed?
ਹਉਮੈ ਏਹੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਫਿਰਾਹਿ ॥
haumai eho hukam hai peiai kirat firaeh |
This ego exists by the Lord's Order; people wander according to their past actions.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀਰਘ ਰੋਗੁ ਹੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਭੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
haumai deeragh rog hai daaroo bhee is maeh |
Ego is a chronic disease, but it contains its own cure as well.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
kirapaa kare je aapanee taa gur kaa sabad kamaeh |
If the Lord grants His Grace, one acts according to the Teachings of the Guru's Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਜਨਹੁ ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
naanak kahai sunahu janahu it sanjam dukh jaeh |2|
Nanak says, listen, people: in this way, troubles depart. ||2||

Pauree:
ਸੇਵ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਈਁ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
sev keetee santokheeee jinaee sacho sach dhiaaeaa |
Those who serve are content. They meditate on the Truest of the True.
ਓਨੑੀ ਮੰਦੈ ਪੈਰੁ ਨ ਰਖਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
onaee mandai pair na rakhio kar sukrit dharam kamaaeaa |
They do not place their feet in sin, but do good deeds and live righteously in Dharma.
ਓਨੑੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤੋੜੇ ਬੰਧਨਾ ਅੰਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਥੋੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
onaee duneea torre bandhanaa an paanee thorraa khaaeaa |
They burn away the bonds of the world, and eat a simple diet of grain and water.
ਤੂੰ ਬਖਸੀਸੀ ਅਗਲਾ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥
toon bakhaseesee agalaa nit deveh charreh savaaeaa |
You are the Great Forgiver; You give continually, more and more each day.
ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
vaddiaaee vaddaa paaeaa |7|
By His greatness, the Great Lord is obtained. ||7||
