ਬੇਧਿਓ ਜਬ ਤਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਰਿਸਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਧਾਨ ॥
bedhio jab tan krisan ris indraasatr sandhaan |
ਮੰਤ੍ਰਨ ਸਿਉ ਅਭਿਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿ ਗਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਛਾਡਿਓ ਬਾਨ ॥੧੪੫੪॥
mantran siau abhimantr kar geh dhan chhaaddio baan |1454|
When the body of Krishna was pierced by arrows, then he put his arrow named Indrastra in his bow and discharged it after reciting mantras. 1454.

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਬੀਰ ਜਿਤੇ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਸਰ ਛੂਟਤ ਭੂ ਪਰ ਆਏ ॥
eindr te aadik beer jite tab hee sar chhoottat bhoo par aae |
ਰਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਅਗਨਾਯੁਧ ਲੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਲਖ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਪ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
raam bhanai aganaayudh lai nrip ko lakh kai kar kop chalaae |
As soon as the arrow was discharged, many mighty warriors like Indra manifested themselves on the earth and manking the king their target, they began to shoot the arrows of fire
ਭੂਪ ਸਰਾਸਨ ਲੈ ਸੁ ਕਟੇ ਅਪਨੇ ਸਰ ਲੈ ਸੁਰ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
bhoop saraasan lai su katte apane sar lai sur ke tan laae |
The king, taking his bow, intercepted those arrows and with his arrows, he wounded the manifested warriors
ਘਾਇਲ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਭਰੇ ਲਖਿ ਕੈ ਸੁਰ ਰਾਜ ਡਰੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਸਬ ਧਾਏ ॥੧੪੫੫॥
ghaaeil sraun bhare lakh kai sur raaj ddare mil kai sab dhaae |1455|
Besmeared with blood and in fear reached before Indra, the king of gods.1455.
ਦੇਵ ਰਵਾਦਿਕ ਬੀਰ ਘਨੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੇ ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਤਏ ਹੈ ॥
dev ravaadik beer ghane kab sayaam bhane at kop te hai |
ਲੈ ਬਰਛੀ ਕਰਵਾਰ ਗਦਾ ਸੁ ਸਬੈ ਰਿਸਿ ਭੂਪ ਸੋ ਆਇ ਖਏ ਹੈ ॥
lai barachhee karavaar gadaa su sabai ris bhoop so aae khe hai |
The warriors glorious like sun, got enraged and taking lances, swords, maces etc., fought with the king Kharag Singh
ਆਨਿ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਭਏ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਜਸੁ ਤਾ ਛਬਿ ਕੇ ਕਬਿ ਭਾਖ ਦਏ ਹੈ ॥
aan ikatr bhe ran mai jas taa chhab ke kab bhaakh de hai |
ਭੂਪ ਕੇ ਬਾਨ ਸੁਗੰਧਿ ਕੇ ਲੈਬੇ ਕਉ ਭਉਰ ਮਨੋ ਇਕ ਠਉਰ ਭਏ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੫੬॥
bhoop ke baan sugandh ke laibe kau bhaur mano ik tthaur bhe hai |1456|
They all gathered together at one place like the god-like black bees gathered to take fragrance of flower-like arrows of the king.1456.

ਦੇਵਨ ਮਿਲਿ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਕਉ ਘੇਰਿ ਚਹੂੰ ਦਿਸਿ ਲੀਨ ॥

All the manifested gods besieged the king from all the four directions
ਤਬ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਲੈ ਕਹੋ ਜੁ ਪਉਰਖ ਕੀਨ ॥੧੪੫੭॥
tab bhoopat dhan baan lai kaho ju paurakh keen |1457|
I relate now the courage shown at that time by the king. 1457.

ਸੂਰ ਕੋ ਦ੍ਵਾਦਸ ਬਾਨਨ ਬੇਧਿ ਕੈ ਅਉ ਸਸਿ ਕੋ ਦਸ ਬਾਨ ਲਗਾਏ ॥
soor ko dvaadas baanan bedh kai aau sas ko das baan lagaae |
ਔਰ ਸਚੀਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਸਰ ਸਉ ਸੁ ਲਗੇ ਤਨ ਭੇਦ ਕੈ ਪਾਰ ਪਰਾਏ ॥
aauar sacheepat kau sar sau su lage tan bhed kai paar paraae |
He discharged twelve arrows towards Surya and ten towards Chandrama, he discharged a hundred arrows towards Indra, which, piercing his body went to the other side
ਜਛ ਜਿਤੇ ਸੁਰ ਕਿੰਨਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਤੇ ਸਬ ਤੀਰਨ ਸੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਘਾਏ ॥
jachh jite sur kinar gandhrab te sab teeran so nrip ghaae |
All the yakshas, gods, kinners, gandharvas etc. who were there, the king knocked them down with his arrows
ਕੇਤਕ ਭਾਜਿ ਗਏ ਰਨ ਤੇ ਡਰਿ ਕੇਤਕਿ ਤਉ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਠਹਰਾਏ ॥੧੪੫੮॥
ketak bhaaj ge ran te ddar ketak tau ran mai tthaharaae |1458|
Many of the manifested gods ran away from battlefield, but there were many who stood there firmly.1458.
ਜੁਧੁ ਭਯੋ ਸੁ ਘਨੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਤਬ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਰਿਸੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਗ ਲਈ ਹੈ ॥
judh bhayo su ghano jab hee tab indr rise kar saag lee hai |
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਬਲ ਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪ ਕੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਡਾਰ ਦਈ ਹੈ ॥
sayaam bhanai bal ko kar kai tih bhoop kai aoopar ddaar dee hai |
When the war started intensively, being enraged Indra took the lance in his hand and discharged it towards the king (Kharag Singh) violently.
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਸਰਾਸਨ ਲੈ ਸਰ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਈ ਉਪਮਾ ਸੁ ਭਈ ਹੈ ॥
sree kharrages saraasan lai sar kaatt dee upamaa su bhee hai |
ਬਾਨ ਭਯੋ ਖਗਰਾਜ ਮਨੋ ਬਰਛੀ ਜਨੋ ਨਾਗਨਿ ਭਛ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੫੯॥
baan bhayo khagaraaj mano barachhee jano naagan bhachh gee hai |1459|
Kharag Singh intercepted the spear with his arrow so accurately as if the garuda-like arrow of the king have swallowed the lance-like female serpent.1459.
ਪੀੜਤ ਕੈ ਸਬ ਬਾਨਨ ਸੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਬੀਰ ਭਜਾਏ ॥
peerrat kai sab baanan so pun indr te aadik beer bhajaae |
Inflicted by the arrows Indra etc. ran away
ਸੂਰ ਸਸੀ ਰਨ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿ ਭਜੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਬਢਾਏ ॥
soor sasee ran tayaag bhajai apane man mai at traas badtaae |
Surya, Chandra and other all abandoned the battlefield and were extremely frightened in their mind
ਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਘਾਇ ਘਨੇ ਤਨ ਮੈ ਭਜ ਗੇ ਸਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਠਹਰਾਏ ॥
khaae kai ghaae ghane tan mai bhaj ge sab hee na koaoo tthaharaae |
After having been wounded, many of them ran away and none of them stayed there
ਜਾਇ ਬਸੇ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਪੁਰ ਮੈ ਸੁਰ ਸੋਕ ਭਰੇ ਸਬ ਲਾਜ ਲਜਾਏ ॥੧੪੬੦॥
jaae base apune pur mai sur sok bhare sab laaj lajaae |1460|
All the gods getting ashamed went back to their abodes.1460.

ਜਬੈ ਸਕਲ ਸੁਰ ਭਜਿ ਗਏ ਤਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੀਨੋ ਮਾਨ ॥
jabai sakal sur bhaj ge tab nrip keeno maan |
When all the gods ran away, the king became egoistic
ਧਨੁਖ ਤਾਨਿ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹਰਿ ਪਰ ਮਾਰੇ ਬਾਨ ॥੧੪੬੧॥
dhanukh taan kar mai prabal har par maare baan |1461|
Now he pulled his bow and showered arrows on Krishna.1461.
ਤਬ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਸਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਲਯੋ ਰਾਛਸ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਧਾਨ ॥
tab har ris kai kar layo raachhas asatr sandhaan |
ਮੰਤ੍ਰਨ ਸਿਉ ਅਭਿਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿ ਛਾਡਿਓ ਅਦਭੁਤ ਬਾਨ ॥੧੪੬੨॥
mantran siau abhimantr kar chhaaddio adabhut baan |1462|
Then Krishna, in his fury, took out his Daityastra (the arm meant for the demons) and discharged it after reciting mantras over this wonderful arrow.1462.

ਦੈਤ ਅਨੇਕ ਭਏ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਬਲਵੰਡ ਕੁਰੂਪ ਭਯਾਨਕ ਕੀਨੇ ॥
dait anek bhe tih te balavandd kuroop bhayaanak keene |
That arrow created dreadful demons, who had discs, axes,
ਚਕ੍ਰ ਧਰੇ ਜਮਦਾਰ ਛੁਰੀ ਅਸਿ ਢਾਲ ਗਦਾ ਬਰਛੀ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੇ ॥
chakr dhare jamadaar chhuree as dtaal gadaa barachhee kar leene |
Knives, swords, shields, maces, and lances in their hands
ਮੂਸਲ ਔਰ ਪਹਾਰ ਉਖਾਰਿ ਲੀਏ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਪਾਤਿ ਬਿਹੀਨੇ ॥
moosal aauar pahaar ukhaar lee kar mai drum paat biheene |
They had big maces in their hands for striking blows, they even uprooted the leafless trees
ਦਾਤਿ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ਨੈਨ ਤਚਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਭਯ ਦੀਨੇ ॥੧੪੬੩॥
daat badtaae kai nain tachaae kai aae kai bhoopat ko bhay deene |1463|
They began to frighten the king, protruding their teeth and extending their eyes.1463.
ਕੇਸ ਬਡੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਬੇਸ ਬੁਰੇ ਅਰੁ ਦੇਹ ਮੈ ਰੋਮ ਬਡੇ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ॥
kes badde sir bes bure ar deh mai rom badde jin ke |
They had long hair on their heads, wore dreadful garbs and had large hair on their bodies
ਮੁਖ ਸੋ ਨਰ ਹਾਡਨ ਚਾਬਤ ਹੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਦਾਤ ਸੇ ਦਾਤ ਬਜੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ॥
mukh so nar haaddan chaabat hai pun daat se daat baje tin ke |
They were crushing the human bones in their mouths and their teeth were clattering
ਸਰ ਸ੍ਰਉਨਤ ਕੇ ਅਖੀਆਂ ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗ ਕੌਨ ਭਿਰੈ ਬਲ ਕੈ ਇਨ ਕੇ ॥
sar sraunat ke akheean jin kee sang kauan bhirai bal kai in ke |
Their eyes were like the sea of blood
ਸਰ ਚਾਪ ਚਢਾਇ ਕੈ ਰੈਨ ਫਿਰੈ ਸਬ ਕਾਮ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਪਾਪਨ ਕੇ ॥੧੪੬੪॥
sar chaap chadtaae kai rain firai sab kaam karai nit paapan ke |1464|
Who could fight with them? They were the wielders of bows and arrows, roaming throughout the nights and always absorbed in vicious acts.1464.
ਧਾਇ ਪਰੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੈ ਉਤ ਰਾਛਸ ਭੂਪ ਇਤੇ ਥਿਰ ਠਾਢੋ ਰਹਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
dhaae pare mil kai ut raachhas bhoop ite thir tthaadto rahio hai |
From that side the demons fell upon him and from this side the king stood firmly peacefully
ਡਾਢ ਸੁ ਕੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਰਿਸਿ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਹਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
ddaadt su kai apane man ko ris satran ko ih bhaat kahio hai |
Then, strengthening his mind and in rage, he said this to the enemies:
ਆਜ ਸਬੈ ਹਨਿ ਹੋ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਕਹਿ ਯੌ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਗਹਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
aaj sabai han ho ran mai keh yau bateeyaa dhan baan gahio hai |
“Today I shall knock down all of you,” saying this, he held up his bow and arrows
ਯੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਅਤਿ ਧੀਰਜ ਪੇਖ ਕੈ ਦਾਨਵ ਕੋ ਦਲ ਰੀਝਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੬੫॥
yau nrip ko at dheeraj pekh kai daanav ko dal reejh rahio hai |1465|
Seeing the endurance of the king Kharag Singh, the army of demons felt pleased.1465.
ਤਾਨਿ ਕਮਾਨ ਮਹਾ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਸੁ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੋ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
taan kamaan mahaa balavaan su satran ko bahu baan chalaae |
Pulling his bow, that mighty warrior showered his arrows on the enemies
ਏਕਨ ਕੀ ਭੁਜ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਈ ਰਿਸਿ ਏਕਨ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਸਰ ਲਾਏ ॥
ekan kee bhuj kaatt dee ris ekan ke ur mai sar laae |
He chopped someone’s arm and in his rage, he discharged his arrow on someone’s chest
ਘਾਇਲ ਏਕ ਗਿਰੇ ਰਨ ਮੋ ਲਖਿ ਕਾਇਰ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਖੇਤ ਪਰਾਏ ॥
ghaaeil ek gire ran mo lakh kaaeir chhaadd kai khet paraae |
Someone, having been wounded fell down in the battlefield and some coward seeing the dreadful war ran away
ਏਕ ਮਹਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਦਯੰਤ ਰਹੇ ਥਿਰ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਤਿਨ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਏ ॥੧੪੬੬॥
ek mahaa balavant dayant rahe thir hvai tin bain sunaae |1466|
Only one powerful demon survived there, who stabilising himself said to the king,1466
ਕਾਹੇ ਕੋ ਜੂਝ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਨ ਰੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੋਹੂ ਕੋ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਾਨ ਨ ਦੈ ਹੈ ॥
kaahe ko joojh kare sun re nrip tohoo ko jeevat jaan na dai hai |
“O king! why are you fighting? We will not let you go alive
ਦੀਰਘ ਦੇਹ ਸਲੋਨੀ ਸੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਤੋ ਸਮ ਭਛ ਕਹਾ ਹਮ ਪੈ ਹੈ ॥
deeragh deh salonee see moorat to sam bhachh kahaa ham pai hai |
Your body is long and elegant, where shall we get such food?
ਤੂ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਤ ਹੈ ਸੁਨ ਰੇ ਸਠ ਤੋ ਕਹੁ ਦਾਤਨ ਸਾਥ ਚਬੈ ਹੈ ॥
too nahee jaanat hai sun re satth to kahu daatan saath chabai hai |
“O fool! you do now know that we shall chew you with our teeth
ਤੋਹੀ ਕੇ ਮਾਸ ਕੇ ਖੰਡਨ ਖੰਡ ਕੈ ਪਾਵਕ ਬਾਨ ਮੈ ਭੁੰਜ ਕੈ ਖੈ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੬੭॥
tohee ke maas ke khanddan khandd kai paavak baan mai bhunj kai khai hai |1467|
We shall roast the bits of your flesh with the fire of our arrows and devour them.”1467.

jeevano mai jeevan paaeaa guramukh bhaae raam |
Life - I have found real life, as Gurmukh, through His Love.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
har naamo har naam devai merai praan vasaae raam |
The Lord's Name - He has given me the Lord's Name, and enshrined it within my breath of life.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
har har naam merai praan vasaae sabh sansaa dookh gavaaeaa |
He has enshrined the Name of the Lord, Har, Har within my breath of lfe, and all my doubts and sorrows have departed.
ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
adisatt agochar gur bachan dhiaaeaa pavitr param pad paaeaa |
I have meditated on the invisible and unapproachable Lord, through the Guru's Word, and I have obtained the pure, supreme status.
ਅਨਹਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਵਾਜੇ ਗਾਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
anahad dhun vaajeh nit vaaje gaaee satigur baanee |
The unstruck melody resounds, and the instruments ever vibrate, singing the Bani of the True Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
naanak daat karee prabh daatai jotee jot samaanee |1|
O Nanak, God the Great Giver has given me a gift; He has blended my light into the Light. ||1||
ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਏ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
manamukhaa manamukh mue meree kar maaeaa raam |
The self-willed manmukhs die in their self-willed stubbornness, declaring that the wealth of Maya is theirs.
ਖਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਾਵੈ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਮੜੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
khin aavai khin jaavai duragandh marrai chit laaeaa raam |
They attach their consciousness to the foul-smelling pile of filth, which comes for a moment, and departs in an instant.
ਲਾਇਆ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਮੜੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
laaeaa duragandh marrai chit laagaa jiau rang kasunbh dikhaaeaa |
They attach their consciousness to the foul-smelling pile of filth, which is transitory, like the fading color of the safflower.
ਖਿਨੁ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਛਮਿ ਛਾਏ ਜਿਉ ਚਕੁ ਕੁਮੑਿਆਰਿ ਭਵਾਇਆ ॥
khin poorab khin pachham chhaae jiau chak kumaiaar bhavaaeaa |
One moment, they are facing east, and the next instant, they are facing west; they continue spinning around, like the potter's wheel.
ਦੁਖੁ ਖਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਭੋਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਵਧਾਈ ॥
dukh khaaveh dukh sancheh bhogeh dukh kee biradh vadhaaee |
In sorrow, they eat, and in sorrow, they gather things and try to enjoy them, but they only increase their stores of sorrow.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਤਰੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
naanak bikham suhelaa tareeai jaa aavai gur saranaaee |2|
O Nanak, one easily crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, when he comes to the Sanctuary of the Guru. ||2||
ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਨੀਕਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਥਾਹਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
meraa tthaakuro tthaakur neekaa agam athaahaa raam |
My Lord, my Lord Master is sublime, unapproachable and unfathomable.
ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜੀ ਚਾਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਹਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
har poojee har poojee chaahee mere satigur saahaa raam |
The wealth of the Lord - I seek the wealth of the Lord, from my True Guru, the Divine Banker.
ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜੀ ਚਾਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
har poojee chaahee naam bisaahee gun gaavai gun bhaavai |
I seek the wealth of the Lord, to purchase the Naam; I sing and love the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਨੀਦ ਭੂਖ ਸਭ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਸੁੰਨੇ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
need bhookh sabh parahar tiaagee sune sun samaavai |
I have totally renounced sleep and hunger, and through deep meditation, I am absorbed into the Absolute Lord.
ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਭਾਤੀ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੇ ॥
vanajaare ik bhaatee aaveh laahaa har naam lai jaahe |
The traders of one kind come and take away the Name of the Lord as their profit.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
naanak man tan arap gur aagai jis praapat so paae |3|
O Nanak, dedicate your mind and body to the Guru; one who is so destined, attains it. ||3||
ਰਤਨਾ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
ratanaa ratan padaarath bahu saagar bhariaa raam |
The great ocean is full of the treasures of jewels upon jewels.
ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਹਥਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
baanee gurabaanee laage tina hath charriaa raam |
Those who are committed to the Word of the Guru's Bani, see them come into their hands.
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਹਥਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
gurabaanee laage tina hath charriaa niramolak ratan apaaraa |
This priceless, incomparable jewel comes into the hands of those who are committed to the Word of the Guru's Bani.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤੋਲਕੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
har har naam atolak paaeaa teree bhagat bhare bhanddaaraa |
They obtain the immeasurable Name of the Lord, Har, Har; their treasure is overflowing with devotional worship.
ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਵਿਰੋਲਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਇਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥
samund virol sareer ham dekhiaa ik vasat anoop dikhaaee |
I have churned the ocean of the body, and I have seen the incomparable thing come into view.
ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਗੋੁਵਿੰਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੮॥
gur govind gouvind guroo hai naanak bhed na bhaaee |4|1|8|
The Guru is God, and God is the Guru, O Nanak; there is no difference between the two, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||1||8||

jhim jhime jhim jhim varasai amrit dhaaraa raam |
Slowly, slowly, slowly, very slowly, the drops of Ambrosial Nectar trickle down.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
guramukhe guramukh nadaree raam piaaraa raam |
As Gurmukh, the Gurmukh beholds the Lord, the Beloved Lord.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
raam naam piaaraa jagat nisataaraa raam naam vaddiaaee |
The Name of the Lord, the Emancipator of the world, is dear to him; the Name of the Lord is his glory.
ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲਘਾਈ ॥
kalijug raam naam bohithaa guramukh paar laghaaee |
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Lord's Name is the boat, which carries the Gurmukh across.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥
halat palat raam naam suhele guramukh karanee saaree |
This world, and the world hereafter, are adorned with the Lord's Name; the Gurmukh's lifestyle is the most excellent.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਤਿ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
naanak daat deaa kar devai raam naam nisataaree |1|
O Nanak, bestowing His kindness, the Lord gives the gift of His emancipating Name. ||1||
ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਨਾਸ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
raamo raam naam japiaa dukh kilavikh naas gavaaeaa raam |
I chant the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, which destroys my sorrows and erases my sins.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
gur parachai gur parachai dhiaaeaa mai hiradai raam ravaaeaa raam |
Associating with the Guru, associating with the Guru, I practice meditation; I have enshrined the Lord within my heart.
ਰਵਿਆ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਆਏ ॥
raviaa raam hiradai param gat paaee jaa gur saranaaee aae |
I enshrined the Lord within my heart, and obtained the supreme status, when I came to the Sanctuary of the Guru.
ਲੋਭ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਨਾਵ ਡੁਬਦੀ ਨਿਕਲੀ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜਾਏ ॥
lobh vikaar naav ddubadee nikalee jaa satigur naam dirraae |
My boat was sinking under the weight of greed and corruption, but it was uplifted when the True Guru implanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within me.
ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
jeea daan gur poorai deea raam naam chit laae |
The Perfect Guru has given me the gift of spiritual life, and I center my consciousness on the Lord's Name.
ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਏ ॥੨॥
aap kripaal kripaa kar devai naanak gur saranaae |2|
The Merciful Lord Himself has mercifully given this gift to me; O Nanak, I take to the Sanctuary of the Guru. ||2||
ਬਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣੀ ਸਿਧਿ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਹਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
baanee raam naam sunee sidh kaaraj sabh suhaae raam |
Hearing the Bani of the Lord's Name, all my affairs were brought to perfection and embellished.
ਰੋਮੇ ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮੇ ਮੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
rome rom rom rome mai guramukh raam dhiaae raam |
With each and every hair, with each and every hair, as Gurmukh, I meditate on the Lord.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਕਾਈ ॥
raam naam dhiaae pavit hoe aae tis roop na rekhiaa kaaee |
I meditate on the Lord's Name, and become pure; He has no form or shape.
ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਭ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੂਖ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
raamo raam raviaa ghatt antar sabh trisanaa bhookh gavaaee |
The Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, is permeating my heart deep within, and all of my desire and hunger has disappeared.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੋਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਾ ॥
man tan seetal seegaar sabh hoaa guramat raam pragaasaa |
My mind and body are totally adorned with peace and tranquility; through the Guru's Teachings, the Lord has been revealed to me.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੩॥
naanak aap anugrahu keea ham daasan daasan daasaa |3|
The Lord Himself has shown His kind mercy to Nanak; He has made me the slave of the slaves of His slaves. ||3||
ਜਿਨੀ ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਅਭਾਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
jinee raamo raam naam visaariaa se manamukh moorr abhaagee raam |
Those who forget the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, are foolish, unfortunate, self-willed manmukhs.
ਤਿਨ ਅੰਤਰੇ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਾਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
tin antare mohu viaapai khin khin maaeaa laagee raam |
Within, they are engrossed in emotional attachment; each and every moment, Maya clings to them.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਮੂੜ ਭਏ ਅਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਹ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
maaeaa mal laagee moorr bhe abhaagee jin raam naam neh bhaaeaa |
The filth of Maya clings to them, and they become unfortunate fools - they do not love the Lord's Name.
ਅਨੇਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੋਰਾਇਆ ॥
anek karam kareh abhimaanee har raamo naam choraaeaa |
The egotistical and proud perform all sorts of rituals, but they shy away from the Lord's Name.
ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ਕਾਲੂਖਤ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥
mahaa bikham jam panth duhelaa kaalookhat moh andhiaaraa |
The path of Death is very arduous and painful; it is stained with the darkness of emotional attachment.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
naanak guramukh naam dhiaaeaa taa paae mokh duaaraa |4|
O Nanak, the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, and finds the gate of salvation. ||4||
ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
raamo raam naam guroo raam guramukhe jaanai raam |
The Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, and the Lord Guru, are known by the Gurmukh.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲੀ ਭਰਮਦਾ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
eihu manooaa khin aoobh peaalee bharamadaa ikat ghar aanai raam |
One moment, this mind is in the heavens, and the next, it is in the nether regions; the Guru brings the wandering mind back to one-pointedness.
ਮਨੁ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ਸਭ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਏ ॥
man ikat ghar aanai sabh gat mit jaanai har raamo naam rasaae |
When the mind returns to one-pointedness, one totally understands the value of salvation, and enjoys the subtle essence of the Lord's Name.
ਜਨ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰਿ ਤਰਾਏ ॥
jan kee paij rakhai raam naamaa prahilaad udhaar taraae |
The Lord's Name preserves the honor of His servant, as He preserved and emancipated Prahlaad.
ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਮੋ ਰਮੁ ਊਚਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤਿਆ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
raamo raam ramo ram aoochaa gun kahatiaa ant na paaeaa |
So repeat continually the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam; chanting His Glorious Virtues, His limit cannot be found.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਭੀਨੇ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
naanak raam naam sun bheene raamai naam samaaeaa |5|
Nanak is drenched in happiness, hearing the Name of the Lord; he is merged in the Name of the Lord. ||5||
ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਸਭ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
jin antare raam naam vasai tin chintaa sabh gavaaeaa raam |
Those beings, whose minds are filled with the Lord's Name, forsake all anxiety.
ਸਭਿ ਅਰਥਾ ਸਭਿ ਧਰਮ ਮਿਲੇ ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
sabh arathaa sabh dharam mile man chindiaa so fal paaeaa raam |
They obtain all wealth, and all Dharmic faith, and the fruits of their minds' desires.
ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥
man chindiaa fal paaeaa raam naam dhiaaeaa raam naam gun gaae |
They obtain the fruits of their hearts' desires, meditating on the Lord's Name, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਬੁਧਿ ਗਈ ਸੁਧਿ ਹੋਈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
duramat kabudh gee sudh hoee raam naam man laae |
Evil-mindedness and duality depart, and their understanding is enlightened. They attach their minds to the Name of the Lord.
ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੋਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ॥
safal janam sareer sabh hoaa jit raam naam paragaasiaa |
Their lives and bodies become totally blessed and fruitful; the Lord's Name illumines them.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਿਆ ॥੬॥
naanak har bhaj sadaa din raatee guramukh nij ghar vaasiaa |6|
O Nanak, by continually vibrating upon the Lord, day and night, the Gurmukhs abide in the home of the inner self. ||6||
ਜਿਨ ਸਰਧਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੀ ਤਿਨੑ ਦੂਜੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
jin saradhaa raam naam lagee tina doojai chit na laaeaa raam |
Those who place their faith in the Lord's Name, do not attach their consciousness to another.
ਜੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਭ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
je dharatee sabh kanchan kar deejai bin naavai avar na bhaaeaa raam |
Even if the entire earth were to be transformed into gold, and given to them, without the Naam, they love nothing else.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
raam naam man bhaaeaa param sukh paaeaa ant chaladiaa naal sakhaaee |
The Lord's Name is pleasing to their minds, and they obtain supreme peace; when they depart in the end, it shall go with them as their support.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸੰਚੀ ਨਾ ਡੂਬੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
raam naam dhan poonjee sanchee naa ddoobai naa jaaee |
I have gathered the capital, the wealth of the Lord's Name; it does not sink, and does not depart.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
raam naam is jug meh tulahaa jamakaal nerr na aavai |
The Lord's Name is the only true support in this age; the Messenger of Death does not draw near it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੭॥
naanak guramukh raam pachhaataa kar kirapaa aap milaavai |7|
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs recognize the Lord; in His Mercy, He unites them with Himself. ||7||
ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤੇ ਸਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
raamo raam naam sate sat guramukh jaaniaa raam |
True, True is the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam; the Gurmukh knows the Lord.
ਸੇਵਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
sevako gur sevaa laagaa jin man tan arap charraaeaa raam |
The Lord's servant is the one who commits himself to the Guru's service, and dedicates his mind and body as an offering to Him.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿਆ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਰਧਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਕ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
man tan arapiaa bahut man saradhiaa gur sevak bhaae milaae |
He dedicates his mind and body to Him, placing great faith in Him; the Guru lovingly unites His servant with Himself.
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ॥
deenaa naath jeea kaa daataa poore gur te paae |
The Master of the meek, the Giver of souls, is obtained through the Perfect Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਖੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਏਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
guroo sikh sikh guroo hai eko gur upades chalaae |
The Guru's Sikh, and the Sikh's Guru, are one and the same; both spread the Guru's Teachings.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਤੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੮॥੨॥੯॥
raam naam mant hiradai devai naanak milan subhaae |8|2|9|
The Mantra of the Lord's Name is enshrined within the heart, O Nanak, and we merge with the Lord so easily. ||8||2||9||
