RUAAMAL STANZA
ਘਾਇ ਖਾਇ ਭਜੇ ਸੁਰਾਰਦਨ ਕੋਪੁ ਓਪ ਮਿਟਾਇ ॥
ghaae khaae bhaje suraaradan kop op mittaae |
ਅੰਧਿ ਕੰਧਿ ਫਿਰਿਯੋ ਤਬੈ ਜਯ ਦੁੰਦਭੀਨ ਬਜਾਇ ॥
andh kandh firiyo tabai jay dundabheen bajaae |
The demons being wounded and becoming weak began to run away and at that time, Andhakasura, resounding his drums turned and moved towards the battlefield.
ਸੂਲ ਸੈਹਥਿ ਪਰਿਘ ਪਟਸਿ ਬਾਣ ਓਘ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ॥
sool saihath parigh pattas baan ogh prahaar |
The blows were struck with tridents, swords, arrows and other weapons and arms and the warriors swung and fell
ਪੇਲਿ ਪੇਲਿ ਗਿਰੇ ਸੁ ਬੀਰਨ ਖੇਲ ਜਾਨੁ ਧਮਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
pel pel gire su beeran khel jaan dhamaar |17|
It seemed that there was a programme of dance and amorous pastime.17.
ਸੇਲ ਰੇਲ ਭਈ ਤਹਾ ਅਰੁ ਤੇਗ ਤੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ॥
sel rel bhee tahaa ar teg teer prahaar |
ਗਾਹਿ ਗਾਹਿ ਫਿਰੇ ਫਵਜਨ ਬਾਹਿ ਬਾਹਿ ਹਥਿਯਾਰ ॥
gaeh gaeh fire favajan baeh baeh hathiyaar |
With the blows of swords and arrows, there was consternation in the battlefield and striking their weapons, the warriors were stirring up the armies.
ਅੰਗ ਭੰਗ ਪਰੇ ਕਹੂੰ ਸਰਬੰਗ ਸ੍ਰੋਨਤ ਪੂਰ ॥
ang bhang pare kahoon sarabang sronat poor |
Somewhere the limbless fighters and somewhere the complete bodies are immersed in blood
ਏਕ ਏਕ ਬਰੀ ਅਨੇਕਨ ਹੇਰਿ ਹੇਰਿ ਸੁ ਹੂਰ ॥੧੮॥
ek ek baree anekan her her su hoor |18|
The warriors who had attained martyrdom, are wedding the heavenly damsels, after making search for them.18.
ਚਉਰ ਚੀਰ ਰਥੀ ਰਥੋਤਮ ਬਾਜ ਰਾਜ ਅਨੰਤ ॥
chaur cheer rathee rathotam baaj raaj anant |
ਸ੍ਰੋਣ ਕੀ ਸਰਤਾ ਉਠੀ ਸੁ ਬਿਅੰਤ ਰੂਪ ਦੁਰੰਤ ॥
sron kee sarataa utthee su biant roop durant |
The garments, chariots, the chariot-riders and many horses are lying hither and thither and a dreadful stream of blood is flowing in the battlefield.
ਸਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਕਟੇ ਕਹੂੰ ਗਜ ਰਾਜ ਤਾਜ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
saaj baaj katte kahoon gaj raaj taaj anek |
Somewhere the bedecked horses and elephants are lying chopped and
ਉਸਟਿ ਪੁਸਟਿ ਗਿਰੇ ਕਹੂੰ ਰਿਪੁ ਬਾਚੀਯੰ ਨਹੀ ਏਕੁ ॥੧੯॥
ausatt pusatt gire kahoon rip baacheeyan nahee ek |19|
Somewhere there are heaps of warriors lying down not a single enemy hath remained alive.19.
ਛਾਡਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਚਲੇ ਤਹਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਅਨੰਤ ॥
chhaadd chhaadd chale tahaa nrip saaj baaj anant |
ਗਾਜ ਗਾਜ ਹਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਵ ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਦੁਰੰਤ ॥
gaaj gaaj hane sadaa siv soorabeer durant |
The kings have abandoned their bedecked horses and elephants and gone away and the god Shiva, shouting very loudly, hath destroyed the mighty warriors.
ਭਾਜ ਭਾਜ ਚਲੇ ਹਠੀ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ॥
bhaaj bhaaj chale hatthee hathiaar haath bisaar |
ਬਾਣ ਪਾਣ ਕਮਾਣ ਛਾਡਿ ਸੁ ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੨੦॥
baan paan kamaan chhaadd su charam baram bisaar |20|
The brave fighters have also abandoned their weapons and gone away, after leaving behind their bows and arrows and steel-armors.20.

ਜਿਤੇ ਕੁ ਸੂਰ ਧਾਈਯੰ ॥

ਤਿਤੇਕੁ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਘਾਈਯੰ ॥

ਜਿਤੇ ਕੁ ਅਉਰ ਧਾਵਹੀ ॥
jite ku aaur dhaavahee |
ਤਿਤਿਯੋ ਮਹੇਸ ਘਾਵਹੀ ॥੨੧॥
titiyo mahes ghaavahee |21|
All the warriors who go in front of him, Rudra destroys them all, those who will advance, will also be destroyed by Shiva.21.
ਕਬੰਧ ਅੰਧ ਉਠਹੀ ॥
kabandh andh utthahee |
ਬਸੇਖ ਬਾਣ ਬੁਠਹੀ ॥
basekh baan butthahee |
The blind (headless) trunks are rising in the battlefield and casting special showers of arrows.
ਪਿਨਾਕ ਪਾਣਿ ਤੇ ਹਣੇ ॥
pinaak paan te hane |
ਅਨੰਤ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਬਣੇ ॥੨੨॥
anant sooramaa bane |22|
Innumerable warriors, shooting arrows from their bows are exhibiting proof of their bravery.22.

Bedecked with the steel-armour, the warriors are thundering on all the four sides.
ਮਹਾ ਬੀਰ ਬੰਕੇ ॥

ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਡੰਕੇ ॥੨੩॥
mittai naeh ddanke |23|
The wanton mighty heroes are irresistible.23.
ਬਜੇ ਘੋਰਿ ਬਾਜੰ ॥
baje ghor baajan |
ਸਜੇ ਸੂਰ ਸਾਜੰ ॥
saje soor saajan |
The horrible sound of musical instruments is being heard and the bedecked warriors are being seen.
ਘਣੰ ਜੇਮ ਗਜੇ ॥

ਮਹਿਖੁਆਸ ਸਜੇ ॥੨੪॥
mahikhuaas saje |24|
The bows are crackling like the thundering of the clouds.24.
ਮਹਿਖੁਆਸ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
mahikhuaas dhaaree |
ਚਲੇ ਬਿਯੋਮਚਾਰੀ ॥
chale biyomachaaree |
The gods, holding their bows, are also moving,
ਸੁਭੰ ਸੂਰ ਹਰਖੇ ॥
subhan soor harakhe |
ਸਰੰ ਧਾਰ ਬਰਖੇ ॥੨੫॥
saran dhaar barakhe |25|
And all the brave fighters, being pleased, are showering their arrows.25.
ਧਰੇ ਬਾਣ ਪਾਣੰ ॥
dhare baan paanan |
ਚੜੇ ਤੇਜ ਮਾਣੰ ॥
charre tej maanan |
Holding their bows in their hands, excessively glorious and proud warriors have marched forward,
ਕਟਾ ਕਟਿ ਬਾਹੈ ॥
kattaa katt baahai |
ਅਧੋ ਅੰਗ ਲਾਹੈ ॥੨੬॥
adho ang laahai |26|
And with the clattering of their weapons, the bodies of the enemies are being chopped into two parts.26.
ਰਿਸੇ ਰੋਸਿ ਰੁਦ੍ਰੰ ॥

ਚਲੈ ਭਾਜ ਛੁਦ੍ਰੰ ॥
chalai bhaaj chhudran |
Seeing the fury of Rudra, the weak demons are running away.
ਮਹਾ ਬੀਰ ਗਜੇ ॥

ਸਿਲਹ ਸੰਜਿ ਸਜੇ ॥੨੭॥

Bedecked with their armour, they mighty warriors are thundering.27.
ਲਏ ਸਕਤਿ ਪਾਣੰ ॥

ਚੜੇ ਤੇਜ ਮਾਣੰ ॥
charre tej maanan |
Holding the Shakti (his power) in his hands the supremely glorious Shiva,
ਗਣੰ ਗਾੜ ਗਾਜੇ ॥
ganan gaarr gaaje |
ਰਣੰ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਰਾਜੇ ॥੨੮॥
ranan rudr raaje |28|
Thundering dreadfully, is absorbed in war, and is looking impressive.28.
ਭਭੰਕੰਤ ਘਾਯੰ ॥

ਲਰੇ ਚਉਪ ਚਾਯੰ ॥
lare chaup chaayan |
The blood is oozing out of the wounds and all the fighters are fighting with enthusiasm.
ਡਕੀ ਡਾਕਣੀਯੰ ॥
ddakee ddaakaneeyan |
ਰੜੈ ਕਾਕਣੀਯੰ ॥੨੯॥

The vampires are pleased and the horses etc, are rolling in dust.29.
ਭਯੰ ਰੋਸ ਰੁਦ੍ਰੰ ॥

ਹਣੈ ਦੈਤ ਛੁਦ੍ਰੰ ॥
hanai dait chhudran |
Rudra, in great fury, hath destroyed the demons,
ਕਟੇ ਅਧੁ ਅਧੰ ॥
katte adh adhan |
ਭਈ ਸੈਣ ਬਧੰ ॥੩੦॥
bhee sain badhan |30|
And hath chopped their bodies into bits and killed the army.30.
ਰਿਸਿਯੋ ਸੂਲ ਪਾਣੰ ॥
risiyo sool paanan |
ਹਣੈ ਦੈਤ ਭਾਣੰ ॥
hanai dait bhaanan |
Shiva, the holder of the trident, is in extreme anger and he hath destroyed the demons.
ਸਰੰ ਓਘ ਛੁਟੇ ॥
saran ogh chhutte |
ਘਣੰ ਜੇਮ ਟੁਟੇ ॥੩੧॥
ghanan jem ttutte |31|
The arrows are being showered like the raining clouds.31.
ਰਣੰ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਗਜੇ ॥
ranan rudr gaje |
ਤਬੈ ਦੈਤ ਭਜੇ ॥
tabai dait bhaje |
When Rudra thundered in the battlefield, then all the demons ran away.
ਤਜੈ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਰਬੰ ॥
tajai sasatr saraban |
ਮਿਟਿਓ ਦੇਹ ਗਰਬੰ ॥੩੨॥
mittio deh garaban |32|
All of them abandoned their weapons and the pride of all was shattered.32.

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:
ਤਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
tau kirapaa te maarag paaeeai |
By Your Grace, we find the Way.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
prabh kirapaa te naam dhiaaeeai |
By God's Grace, we meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
prabh kirapaa te bandhan chhuttai |
By God's Grace, we are released from our bondage.
ਤਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ॥੧॥
tau kirapaa te haumai tuttai |1|
By Your Grace, egotism is eradicated. ||1||
ਤੁਮ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਉ ਲਾਗਹ ਸੇਵ ॥
tum laavahu tau laagah sev |
As You assign me, so I take to Your service.
ਹਮ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੇਵ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ham te kachhoo na hovai dev |1| rahaau |
By myself, I cannot do anything at all, O Divine Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਗਾਵਾ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
tudh bhaavai taa gaavaa baanee |
If it pleases You, then I sing the Word of Your Bani.
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
tudh bhaavai taa sach vakhaanee |
If it pleases You, then I speak the Truth.
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਇਆ ॥
tudh bhaavai taa satigur meaa |
If it pleases You, then the True Guru showers His Mercy upon me.
ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਇਆ ॥੨॥
sarab sukhaa prabh teree deaa |2|
All peace comes by Your Kindness, God. ||2||
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮਾ ॥
jo tudh bhaavai so niramal karamaa |
Whatever pleases You is a pure action of karma.
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
jo tudh bhaavai so sach dharamaa |
Whatever pleases You is the true faith of Dharma.
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਗੁਣ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
sarab nidhaan gun tum hee paas |
The treasure of all excellence is with You.
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
toon saahib sevak aradaas |3|
Your servant prays to You, O Lord and Master. ||3||
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
man tan niramal hoe har rang |
The mind and body become immaculate through the Lord's Love.
ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਪਾਵਉ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ॥
sarab sukhaa paavau satasang |
All peace is found in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਰਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
naam terai rahai man raataa |
My mind remains attuned to Your Name;
ਇਹੁ ਕਲਿਆਣੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੧੪॥੮੩॥
eihu kaliaan naanak kar jaataa |4|14|83|
Nanak affirms this as his greatest pleasure. ||4||14||83||

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:
ਆਨ ਰਸਾ ਜੇਤੇ ਤੈ ਚਾਖੇ ॥
aan rasaa jete tai chaakhe |
You may taste the other flavors,
ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਾਥੇ ॥
nimakh na trisanaa teree laathe |
but your thirst shall not depart, even for an instant.
ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਕਾ ਤੂੰ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਸਾਦੁ ॥
har ras kaa toon chaakheh saad |
But when you taste the sweet flavor the the Lord's sublime essence
ਚਾਖਤ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ॥੧॥
chaakhat hoe raheh bisamaad |1|
- upon tasting it, you shall be wonder-struck and amazed. ||1||
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਪੀਉ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
amrit rasanaa peeo piaaree |
O dear beloved tongue, drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਇਹ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੀ ਹੋਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eih ras raatee hoe tripataaree |1| rahaau |
Imbued with this sublime essence, you shall be satisfied. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਜਿਹਵੇ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
he jihave toon raam gun gaau |
O tongue, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਉ ॥
nimakh nimakh har har har dhiaau |
Each and every moment, meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, Har.
ਆਨ ਨ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
aan na suneeai katahoon jaaeeai |
Do not listen to any other, and do not go anywhere else.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
saadhasangat vaddabhaagee paaeeai |2|
By great good fortune, you shall find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||2||
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਜਿਹਵੇ ਆਰਾਧਿ ॥
aatth pehar jihave aaraadh |
Twenty-four hours a day, O tongue, dwell upon God,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਆਗਾਧਿ ॥
paarabraham tthaakur aagaadh |
The Unfathomable, Supreme Lord and Master.
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ॥
eehaa aoohaa sadaa suhelee |
Here and hereafter, you shall be happy forever.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਰਸਨ ਅਮੋਲੀ ॥੩॥
har gun gaavat rasan amolee |3|
Chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, O tongue, you shall become priceless. ||3||
ਬਨਸਪਤਿ ਮਉਲੀ ਫਲ ਫੁਲ ਪੇਡੇ ॥
banasapat maulee fal ful pedde |
All the vegetation will blossom forth for you, flowering in fruition;
ਇਹ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੀ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਛੋਡੇ ॥
eih ras raatee bahur na chhodde |
imbued with this sublime essence, you shall never leave it again.
ਆਨ ਨ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਲਵੈ ਨ ਲਾਈ ॥
aan na ras kas lavai na laaee |
No other sweet and tasty flavors can compare to it.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੫॥੮੪॥
kahu naanak gur bhe hai sahaaee |4|15|84|
Says Nanak, the Guru has become my Support. ||4||15||84||

ਮਨੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਜੀ ਬਾਰਿ ॥
man mandar tan saajee baar |
The mind is the temple, and the body is the fence built around it.
ਇਸ ਹੀ ਮਧੇ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
eis hee madhe basat apaar |
The infinite substance is within it.
ਇਸ ਹੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸੁਨੀਅਤ ਸਾਹੁ ॥
eis hee bheetar suneeat saahu |
Within it, the great merchant is said to dwell.
ਕਵਨੁ ਬਾਪਾਰੀ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਊਹਾ ਵਿਸਾਹੁ ॥੧॥
kavan baapaaree jaa kaa aoohaa visaahu |1|
Who is the trader who deals there? ||1||
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨ ਕੋ ਕੋ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੀ ॥
naam ratan ko ko biauhaaree |
How rare is that trader who deals in the jewel of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਆਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
amrit bhojan kare aahaaree |1| rahaau |
He takes the Ambrosial Nectar as his food. ||1||Pause||
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
man tan arapee sev kareejai |
He dedicates his mind and body to serving the Lord.
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
kavan su jugat jit kar bheejai |
How can we please the Lord?
ਪਾਇ ਲਗਉ ਤਜਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਤੇਰੈ ॥
paae lgau taj meraa terai |
I fall at His Feet, and I renounce all sense of 'mine and yours'.
ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਜਨੁ ਜੋ ਸਉਦਾ ਜੋਰੈ ॥੨॥
kavan su jan jo saudaa jorai |2|
Who can settle this bargain? ||2||
ਮਹਲੁ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਕਿਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
mehal saah kaa kin bidh paavai |
How can I attain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence?
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥
kavan su bidh jit bheetar bulaavai |
How can I get Him to call me inside?
ਤੂੰ ਵਡ ਸਾਹੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕੋਟਿ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥
toon vadd saahu jaa ke kott vanajaare |
You are the Great Merchant; You have millions of traders.
ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਲੇ ਸੰਚਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
kavan su daataa le sanchaare |3|
Who is the benefactor? Who can take me to Him? ||3||
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਨਿਜ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
khojat khojat nij ghar paaeaa |
Seeking and searching, I have found my own home, deep within my own being.
ਅਮੋਲ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ॥
amol ratan saach dikhalaaeaa |
The True Lord has shown me the priceless jewel.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਬ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਾਹਿ ॥
kar kirapaa jab mele saeh |
When the Great Merchant shows His Mercy, He blends us into Himself.
