ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Mehl:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥

satigur milai vaddabhaag sanjog |

Through great good fortune and high destiny, one meets the True Guru.

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ॥੧॥

hiradai naam nit har ras bhog |1|

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is constantly within the heart, and one enjoys the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥

guramukh praanee naam har dhiaae |

O mortal, become Gurmukh, and meditate on the Name of the Lord.

ਜਨਮੁ ਜੀਤਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

janam jeet laahaa naam paae |1| rahaau |

Be victorious in the game of life, and earn the profit of the Naam. ||1||Pause||

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਮੀਠਾ ॥

giaan dhiaan gurasabad hai meetthaa |

Spiritual wisdom and meditation come to those unto whom the Word of the Guru's Shabad is sweet.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਚਖਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੨॥

gur kirapaa te kinai viralai chakh ddeetthaa |2|

By Guru's Grace, a few have tasted, and seen it. ||2||

ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਚਾਰ ॥

karam kaandd bahu kareh achaar |

They may perform all sorts of religious rituals and good actions,

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥੩॥

bin naavai dhrig dhrig ahankaar |3|

but without the Name, the egotistical ones are cursed and doomed. ||3||

ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਮਾਇਆ ਫਾਸ ॥

bandhan baadhio maaeaa faas |

They are bound and gagged, and hung by Maya's noose;

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥੪॥੧੪॥੩੪॥

jan naanak chhoottai gur paragaas |4|14|34|

O servant Nanak, they shall be released only by Guru's Grace. ||4||14||34||

ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ॥

Third Mehl, Gauree Bairaagan:

ਜੈਸੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਊਪਰਿਮੇਘੁਲਾ ਬਰਸਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਧੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

jaisee dharatee aooparimeghulaa barasat hai kiaa dharatee madhe paanee naahee |

The clouds pour their rain down upon the earth, but isn't there water within the earth as well?

ਜੈਸੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਧੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਗਾ ਵਰਸਤ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

jaise dharatee madhe paanee paragaasiaa bin pagaa varasat firaahee |1|

Water is contained within the earth; without feet, the clouds run around and let down their rain. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਤੂੰ ਐਸੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਹੀ ॥

baabaa toon aise bharam chukaahee |

O Baba, get rid of your doubts like this.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਤੈਸੇ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jo kichh karat hai soee koee hai re taise jaae samaahee |1| rahaau |

As you act, so shall you become, and so you shall go and mingle. ||1||Pause||

ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਕਿਆ ਓਇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥

eisataree purakh hoe kai kiaa oe karam kamaahee |

As woman or man, what can anyone do?

ਨਾਨਾ ਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ ਹਹਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥

naanaa roop sadaa heh tere tujh hee maeh samaahee |2|

The many and various forms are always Yours, O Lord; they shall merge again into You. ||2||

ਇਤਨੇ ਜਨਮ ਭੂਲਿ ਪਰੇ ਸੇ ਜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਭੂਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

eitane janam bhool pare se jaa paaeaa taa bhoole naahee |

In countless incarnations, I went astray. Now that I have found You, I shall no longer wander.

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੋਈ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੩॥

jaa kaa kaaraj soee par jaanai je gur kai sabad samaahee |3|

It is His work; those who are absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad come to know it well. ||3||

ਤੇਰਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਹਹਿ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਕਹਾਹੀ ॥

teraa sabad toonhai heh aape bharam kahaahee |

The Shabad is Yours; You are Yourself. Where is there any doubt?

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਤਤ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਹੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੫॥੩੫॥

naanak tat tat siau miliaa punarap janam na aahee |4|1|15|35|

O Nanak, one whose essence is merged with the Lord's essence does not have to enter the cycle of reincarnation again. ||4||1||15||35||

ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Gauree Bairaagan, Third Mehl:

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਬਾਧਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

sabh jag kaalai vas hai baadhaa doojai bhaae |

The whole world is under the power of Death, bound by the love of duality.

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

haumai karam kamaavade manamukh milai sajaae |1|

The self-willed manmukhs do their deeds in ego; they receive their just rewards. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

mere man gur charanee chit laae |

O my mind, focus your consciousness on the Guru's Feet.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਲੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

guramukh naam nidhaan lai daragah le chhaddaae |1| rahaau |

As Gurmukh, you shall be awarded the treasure of the Naam. In the Court of the Lord, you shall be saved. ||1||Pause||

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

lakh chauraaseeh bharamade manahatth aavai jaae |

Through 8.4 million incarnations, people wander lost; in stubborn-mindedness, they come and go.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਿਓ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

gur kaa sabad na cheenio fir fir jonee paae |2|

They do not realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad; they are reincarnated over and over again. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥

guramukh aap pachhaaniaa har naam vasiaa man aae |

The Gurmukh understands his own self. The Lord's Name comes to dwell within the mind.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥

anadin bhagatee ratiaa har naame sukh samaae |3|

Imbued with devotion to the Lord's Name, night and day, he merges in peace. ||3||

ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

man sabad marai parateet hoe haumai taje vikaar |

When one's mind dies in the Shabad, one radiates faith and confidence, shedding egotism and corruption.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੬॥੩੬॥

jan naanak karamee paaeean har naamaa bhagat bhanddaar |4|2|16|36|

O servant Nanak, through the karma of good actions, the treasure of devotional worship and the Name of the Lord are attained. ||4||2||16||36||

ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Gauree Bairaagan, Third Mehl:

ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

peeearrai din chaar hai har har likh paaeaa |

The Lord, Har, Har, has ordained that the soul is to stay in her parents' home for only a few short days.

ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

sobhaavantee naar hai guramukh gun gaaeaa |

Glorious is that soul-bride, who as Gurmukh, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਪੇਵਕੜੈ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਮਲੈ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਵਾਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

pevakarrai gun samalai saahurai vaas paaeaa |

She who cultivates virtue in her parents' home, shall obtain a home at her in-laws.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਣੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

guramukh sehaj samaaneea har har man bhaaeaa |1|

The Gurmukhs are intuitively absorbed into the Lord. The Lord is pleasing to their minds. ||1||

ਸਸੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਪਿਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

sasurai peeeai pir vasai kahu kit bidh paaeeai |

Our Husband Lord dwells in this world, and in the world beyond. Tell me, how can He be found?

ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

aap niranjan alakh hai aape melaaeeai |1| rahaau |

The Immaculate Lord Himself is unseen. He unites us with Himself. ||1||Pause||

ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

aape hee prabh dehi mat har naam dhiaaeeai |

God Himself bestows wisdom; meditate on the Name of the Lord.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

vaddabhaagee satigur milai mukh amrit paaeeai |

By great good fortune, one meets the True Guru, who places the Ambrosial Nectar in the mouth.

ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥

haumai dubidhaa binas jaae sahaje sukh samaaeeai |

When egotism and duality are eradicated, one intuitively merges in peace.

ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

sabh aape aap varatadaa aape naae laaeeai |2|

He Himself is All-pervading; He Himself links us to His Name. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਇਆਣੇ ॥

manamukh garab na paaeo agiaan eaane |

The self-willed manmukhs, in their arrogant pride, do not find God; they are so ignorant and foolish!

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੇ ॥

satigur sevaa naa kareh fir fir pachhutaane |

They do not serve the True Guru, and in the end, they regret and repent, over and over again.

ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਵਾਸੁ ਪਾਇਦੇ ਗਰਭੇ ਗਲਿ ਜਾਣੇ ॥

garabh jonee vaas paaeide garabhe gal jaane |

They are cast into the womb to be reincarnated, and within the womb, they rot.

ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤੇ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਾਣੇ ॥੩॥

mere karate evai bhaavadaa manamukh bharamaane |3|

As it pleases my Creator Lord, the self-willed manmukhs wander around lost. ||3||

ਮੇਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

merai har prabh lekh likhaaeaa dhur masatak pooraa |

My Lord God inscribed the full pre-ordained destiny upon the forehead.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

har har naam dhiaaeaa bhettiaa gur sooraa |

When one meets the Great and Courageous Guru, one meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੰਧਪੁ ਬੀਰਾ ॥

meraa pitaa maataa har naam hai har bandhap beeraa |

The Lord's Name is my mother and father; the Lord is my relative and brother.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕੀਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੭॥੩੭॥

har har bakhas milaae prabh jan naanak keeraa |4|3|17|37|

O Lord, Har, Har, please forgive me and unite me with Yourself. Servant Nanak is a lowly worm. ||4||3||17||37||
