ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਤਬੈ ਕੋਪ ਗਰਜਿਯੋ ਬਲੀ ਸੰਖ ਬੀਰੰ ॥

tabai kop garajiyo balee sankh beeran |

ਧਰੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਸਜੇ ਲੋਹ ਚੀਰੰ ॥

dhare sasatr asatran saje loh cheeran |

Then in great anger, the mighty Shankhasura thundered and wore his armour bedecking himself with weapons and arms

ਚਤੁਰ ਬੇਦ ਪਾਤੰ ਕੀਯੋ ਸਿੰਧ ਮੱਧੰ ॥

chatur bed paatan keeyo sindh madhan |

ਤ੍ਰਸ︀︁ਯੋ ਅਸਟ ਨੈਣੰ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਜਾਪੁ ਸੁਧੰ ॥੪੧॥

trasayo asatt nainan kariyo jaap sudhan |41|

He threw the fore Vedas in the ocean, which frightened the eitht-eyed Brahma and caused him to remember the Lord.41.

ਤਬੈ ਸੰਭਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਹੇਤੰ ਦਿਆਲੰ ॥

tabai sanbhare deen hetan diaalan |

ਧਰੇ ਲੋਹ ਕ੍ਰੋਹੰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੰ ॥

dhare loh krohan kripaa kai kripaalan |

Then the Lord, the well-wisher of both (the Vedas as well as Brahma) ws filled with kindness and highly enraged, He wore His steel-armour.

ਮਹਾਂ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਾਤੰ ਕਰੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਘਾਤੰ ॥

mahaan asatru paatan kare sasatr ghaatan |

ਟਰੇ ਦੇਵ ਸਰਬੰ ਗਿਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਾਤੰ ॥੪੨॥

ttare dev saraban gire lok saatan |42|

The bows of weapons were struck alongwith arms causing destruction. All the gods in groups moved away from their seats and the seven worlds trembled because of this horrible war.42.

ਭਏ ਅਤ੍ਰੁ ਘਾਤੰ ਗਿਰੇ ਚਉਰ ਚੀਰੰ ॥

bhe atru ghaatan gire chaur cheeran |

ਰੁਲੇ ਤੱਛ ਮੁੱਛੰ ਉਠੇ ਤਿੱਛ ਤੀਰੰ ॥

rule tachh muchhan utthe tichh teeran |

With the blows of arms, the fly-whisks and the garments behan to fall and with the volley of arrows, the chopped bodies began to fall on the ground.

ਗਿਰੇ ਸੁੰਡ ਮੁੰਡੰ ਰਣੰ ਭੀਮ ਰੂਪੰ ॥

gire sundd munddan ranan bheem roopan |

The chopped trunks and heads of huge elephants began to fall

ਮਨੋ ਖੇਲ ਪਉਢੇ ਹਠੀ ਫਾਗ ਜੂਪੰ ॥੪੩॥

mano khel paudte hatthee faag joopan |43|

It appeared that the group of persistent youths was playing Holi.43.

ਬਹੇ ਖੱਗਯੰ ਖੇਤ ਖਿੰਗੰ ਸੁ ਧੀਰੰ ॥

bahe khagayan khet khingan su dheeran |

The sword and daggers of the warriors with the power of endurance have been struck

ਸੁਭੈ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਜਾਨ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਬੀਰੰ ॥

subhai sasatr sanjaan so soorabeeran |

And the brave fighters are bedecked with weapons and armours.

ਗਿਰੇ ਗਉਰ ਗਾਜੀ ਖੁਲੇ ਹੱਥਿ ਬੱਥੰ ॥

gire gaur gaajee khule hath bathan |

The mighty heroes have fallen down with empty hands and seeing all this spectacle,

ਨਚਿ︁ਯੋ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਰੁਦ੍ਰੰ ਨਚੇ ਮੱਛ ਮੱਥੰ ॥੪੪॥

nachayo rudr rudran nache machh mathan |44|

The god Shiva is busy in another dance and on the other side, the Machh incarnation, being pleased, is stirring the ocean.44.

RASAAVAL STANZA

ਮਹਾ ਬੀਰ ਗੱਜੇ ॥

mahaa beer gaje |

Bedecked with auspicious weapons,

ਸਭੰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੱਜੇ ॥

sabhan sasatr saje |

The brave fighters are thundering and seeing the killing of huge and mighty warriors like elephants,

ਬੱਧੇ ਗੱਜਗਾਹੰ ॥

badhe gajagaahan |

The heavenly damsels, being passed with their feats,

ਸੁ ਹੂਰੰ ਉਛਾਹੰ ॥੪੫॥

su hooran uchhaahan |45|

Are waiting in heaven, in order to wed them.45.

ਢਲਾ ਢੁੱਕ ਢਾਲੰ ॥

dtalaa dtuk dtaalan |

The noises of the knocking on the shields and

ਝਮੀ ਤੇਗ ਕਾਲੰ ॥

jhamee teg kaalan |

The blows of the swords are being heard,

ਕਟਾ ਕਾਟ ਬਾਹੈਂ ॥

kattaa kaatt baahain |

The daggers are being struck with clattering sound,

ਉਭੈ ਜੀਤ ਚਾਹੈਂ ॥੪੬॥

aubhai jeet chaahain |46|

And both the side are desirous of their victory.46.

ਮੁਖੰ ਮੁੱਛ ਬੰਕੀ ॥

mukhan muchh bankee |

ਤਮੰ ਤੇਗ ਅਤੰਕੀ ॥

taman teg atankee |

The whickers on the faces and terrible swords in the hands of the warriors look impressive,

ਫਿਰੈਂ ਗਉਰ ਗਾਜੀ ॥

firain gaur gaajee |

ਨਚੈਂ ਤੁੰਦ ਤਾਜੀ ॥੪੭॥

nachain tund taajee |47|

The mighty warriors are wandering in the battlefield and supremely swift horses are dancing.47.

BHUJANG STANZA

ਭਰ︁ਯੋ ਰੋਸ ਸੰਖਾਸੁਰੰ ਦੇਖ ਸੈਣੰ ॥

bharayo ros sankhaasuran dekh sainan |

On seeing the army, Shankhasura was highly enraged,

ਤਪੇ ਬੀਰ ਬਕਤ੍ਰੰ ਕੀਏ ਰਕਤ ਨੈਣੰ ॥

tape beer bakatran kee rakat nainan |

Other heroes also blazing with anger began to shout loudly, with their eyes reddened with blood.

ਭੁਜਾ ਠੋਕ ਭੂਪੰ ਕਰ︁ਯੋ ਨਾਦ ਉੱਚੰ ॥

bhujaa tthok bhoopan karayo naad uchan |

The king Shankhasura, knocking his arms, raised a terrible thunder and

ਸੁਣੇ ਗਰਭਣੀਆਨ ਕੇ ਗਰਭ ਮੁੱਚੰ ॥੪੮॥

sune garabhaneeaan ke garabh muchan |48|

Hearing his frightening sound, the pregnancy of women was miscarried.48.

ਲਗੇ ਠਾਮ ਠਾਮੰ ਦਮਾਮੰ ਦਮੰਕੇ ॥

lage tthaam tthaaman damaaman damanke |

All resisted at their place and the trumpets began to resound violently,

ਖੁਲੇ ਖੇਤ ਮੋ ਖੱਗ ਖੂਨੀ ਖਿਮੰਕੇ ॥

khule khet mo khag khoonee khimanke |

He bloody daggers coming out (from) the scabbards) glistened in the battlefield.

ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਭਾਂਤੰ ਕਮਾਣੰ ਕੜੱਕੇ ॥

bhe kraoor bhaantan kamaanan karrake |

The voice of the cracking of the cruel bows were heard and

ਨਚੇ ਬੀਰ ਬੈਤਾਲ ਭੂਤੰ ਭੁੜੱਕੇ ॥੪੯॥

nache beer baitaal bhootan bhurrake |49|

The ghosts and goblins began to dance furiously.49.

ਗਿਰਯੋ ਆਯੁਧੰ ਸਾਯੁਧੰ ਬੀਰ ਖੇਤੰ ॥

girayo aayudhan saayudhan beer khetan |

The warriors began to fall in the battlefield alongwith their weapons, and

ਨਚੇ ਕੰਧ ਹੀਣੰ ਕਮੱਧੰ ਅਚੇਤੰ ॥

nache kandh heenan kamadhan achetan |

The headless trunks began to dance unconsciously in the war.

ਖੁਲੇ ਖੱਗ ਖੂਨੀ ਖਿਆਲੰ ਖਤੰਗੰ ॥

khule khag khoonee khiaalan khatangan |

The bloody daggers and sharp arrow were struck,

ਭਜੇ ਕਾਤਰੰ ਸੂਰ ਬੱਜੇ ਨਿਹੰਗੰ ॥੫੦॥

bhaje kaataran soor baje nihangan |50|

The trumpets began to resound violently and the warriors began to run hither and thither.50.

ਕਟੇ ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮੰ ਗਿਰਿ︁ਯੋ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

katte charam baraman girayo satru sasatran |

ਭਕੈ ਭੈ ਭਰੇ ਭੂਤ ਭੂਮੰ ਨ੍ਰਿਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

bhakai bhai bhare bhoot bhooman nrisatran |

ਰਣੰ ਰੰਗ ਰੱਤੇ ਸਭੀ ਰੰਗ ਭੂਮੰ ॥

ranan rang rate sabhee rang bhooman |

ਗਿਰੇ ਜੁੱਧ ਮੱਧੰ ਬਲੀ ਝੂਮ ਝੂਮੰ ॥੫੧॥

gire judh madhan balee jhoom jhooman |51|

All were dyed in the dye of war and the mighty warriors began to fall in the battlefield swinging and reeling.51

ਭ︁ਯੋ ਦੁੰਦ ਜੁੱਧੰ ਰਣੰ ਸੰਖ ਮੱਛੰ ॥

bhayo dund judhan ranan sankh machhan |

ਮਨੋ ਦੋ ਗਿਰੰ ਜੁੱਧ ਜੁਟੇ ਸਪੱਛੰ ॥

mano do giran judh jutte sapachhan |

Such a horrible battle was fought between Shankhasura and Machh. It appeared clearly that two mountains were waging war with each other.

ਕਟੇ ਮਾਸ ਟੁੱਕੰ ਭਖੇ ਗਿੱਧਿ ਬ੍ਰਿਧੰ ॥

katte maas ttukan bhakhe gidh bridhan |

ਹਸੀ ਜੋਗਣੀ ਚਉਸਠਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੁੱਧੰ ॥੫੨॥

hasee joganee chausatthaa soor sudhan |52|

The bits of flesh began to fall, which were devoured by huge vultures, and the sixty-four vampires (Yoginis) began to laugh on seeing this terrible war.52.

ਕੀਯੋ ਉਧਾਰ ਬੇਦੰ ਹਤੇ ਸੰਖ ਬੀਰੰ ॥

keeyo udhaar bedan hate sankh beeran |

ਤਜ︁ਯੋ ਮੱਛ ਰੂਪੰ ਸਜ︁ਯੋ ਸੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਚੀਰੰ ॥

tajayo machh roopan sajayo sundr cheeran |

After killing Shankhasura, the Machh (fish) incarnation redeemed the Vedas and Lord, forsaking the Fish-form, bedecked himself with winsome garments.

ਸਬੈ ਦੇਵ ਥਾਪੇ ਕੀਯੋ ਦੁਸਟ ਨਾਸੰ ॥

sabai dev thaape keeyo dusatt naasan |

ਟਰੇ ਸਰਬ ਦਾਨੋ ਭਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੰ ॥੫੩॥

ttare sarab daano bhare jeev traasan |53|

After destroying the tyrants, the Lord established again all the gods, and demons frightening the creatures were destroyed.53.

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Mehl:

ਤੂੰ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਥਿਆ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

toon akath kiau kathiaa jaeh |

You are Indescribable; how can I describe You?

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਮਾਰਣੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

gurasabad maaran man maeh samaeh |

Those who subdue their minds, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, are absorbed in You.

ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਅਨੇਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

tere gun anek keemat neh paeh |1|

Your Glorious Virtues are countless; their value cannot be estimated. ||1||

ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

jis kee baanee tis maeh samaanee |

The Word of His Bani belongs to Him; in Him, it is diffused.

ਤੇਰੀ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

teree akath kathaa gur sabad vakhaanee |1| rahaau |

Your Speech cannot be spoken; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, it is chanted. ||1||Pause||

ਜਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਹ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਣਾਈ ॥

jeh satigur teh satasangat banaaee |

Where the True Guru is - there is the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਜਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥

jeh satigur sahaje har gun gaaee |

Where the True Guru is - there, the Glorious Praises of the Lord are intuitively sung.

ਜਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਹਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਈ ॥੨॥

jeh satigur tahaa haumai sabad jalaaee |2|

Where the True Guru is - there egotism is burnt away, through the Word of the Shabad. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਮਹਲੀ ਥਾਉ ਪਾਏ ॥

guramukh sevaa mahalee thaau paae |

The Gurmukhs serve Him; they obtain a place in the Mansion of His Presence.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

guramukh antar har naam vasaae |

The Gurmukhs enshrine the Naam within the mind.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥

guramukh bhagat har naam samaae |3|

The Gurmukhs worship the Lord, and are absorbed in the Naam. ||3||

ਆਪੇ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥

aape daat kare daataar |

The Giver Himself gives His Gifts,

ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

poore satigur siau lagai piaar |

as we enshrine love for the True Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੮॥੨੮॥

naanak naam rate tin kau jaikaar |4|8|28|

Nanak celebrates those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||8||28||

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

gaurree guaareree mahalaa 3 |

Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Mehl:

ਏਕਸੁ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਰੂਪ ਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥

ekas te sabh roop heh rangaa |

All forms and colors come from the One Lord.

ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਸਭਿ ਸਹਲੰਗਾ ॥

paun paanee baisantar sabh sehalangaa |

Air, water and fire are all kept together.

ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਵੇਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰੰਗਾ ॥੧॥

bhin bhin vekhai har prabh rangaa |1|

The Lord God beholds the many and various colors. ||1||

ਏਕੁ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

ek acharaj eko hai soee |

The One Lord is wondrous and amazing! He is the One, the One and Only.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

guramukh veechaare viralaa koee |1| rahaau |

How rare is that Gurmukh who meditates on the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਸਹਜਿ ਭਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ॥

sehaj bhavai prabh sabhanee thaaee |

God is naturally pervading all places.

ਕਹਾ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥

kahaa gupat pragatt prabh banat banaaee |

Sometimes He is hidden, and sometimes He is revealed; thus God has made the world of His making.

ਆਪੇ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਦੇਇ ਜਗਾਈ ॥੨॥

aape sutiaa dee jagaaee |2|

He Himself wakes us from sleep. ||2||

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

tis kee keemat kinai na hoee |

No one can estimate His value,

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਥਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

keh keh kathan kahai sabh koee |

although everyone has tried, over and over again, to describe Him.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥

gur sabad samaavai boojhai har soee |3|

Those who merge in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, come to understand the Lord. ||3||

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

sun sun vekhai sabad milaae |

They listen to the Shabad continually; beholding Him, they merge into Him.

ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ॥

vaddee vaddiaaee gur sevaa te paae |

They obtain glorious greatness by serving the Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੪॥੯॥੨੯॥

naanak naam rate har naam samaae |4|9|29|

O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Name are absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||4||9||29||

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Mehl:

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

manamukh sootaa maaeaa mohi piaar |

The self-willed manmukhs are asleep, in love and attachment to Maya.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

guramukh jaage gun giaan beechaar |

The Gurmukhs are awake, contemplating spiritual wisdom and the Glory of God.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਜਾਗੇ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੧॥

se jan jaage jin naam piaar |1|

Those humble beings who love the Naam, are awake and aware. ||1||

ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਵੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

sahaje jaagai savai na koe |

One who is awake to this intuitive wisdom does not fall asleep.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

poore gur te boojhai jan koe |1| rahaau |

How rare are those humble beings who understand this through the Perfect Guru. ||1||Pause||

ਅਸੰਤੁ ਅਨਾੜੀ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

asant anaarree kade na boojhai |

The unsaintly blockhead shall never understand.

ਕਥਨੀ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥

kathanee kare tai maaeaa naal loojhai |

He babbles on and on, but he is infatuated with Maya.

ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੨॥

andh agiaanee kade na seejhai |2|

Blind and ignorant, he shall never be reformed. ||2||

ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥

eis jug meh raam naam nisataaraa |

In this age, salvation comes only from the Lord's Name.

ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

viralaa ko paae gur sabad veechaaraa |

How rare are those who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

aap tarai sagale kul udhaaraa |3|

They save themselves, and save all their family and ancestors as well. ||3||

ਇਸੁ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

eis kalijug meh karam dharam na koee |

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, no one is interested in good karma, or Dharmic faith.

ਕਲੀ ਕਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

kalee kaa janam chanddaal kai ghar hoee |

This Dark Age was born in the house of evil.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੩੦॥

naanak naam binaa ko mukat na hoee |4|10|30|

O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated. ||4||10||30||
