ੴ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹ ॥
ik oankaar vaahiguroo jee kee fatah |
The Lord is One and the Victory is of the True Guru.
ਰਜ਼ਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਏ ਬੇਸ਼ੁਮਾਰ ॥
razaa bakhash bakhashinde beshumaar |
He is blissful and endows abundance of amenities
ਰਿਹਾਈ ਦਿਹੋ ਪਾਕ ਪਰਵਰਦਗਾਰ ॥੧॥
rihaaee diho paak paravaradagaar |1|
He is nurturer and emancipators(1)
ਰਹੀਮੋ ਕਰੀਮੋ ਮਕੀਨੋ ਮਕਾ ॥
raheemo kareemo makeeno makaa |
He is compassionate and provider of shelter
ਅਜ਼ੀਮੋ ਫ਼ਹੀਮੋ ਜ਼ਮੀਨੋ ਜ਼ਮਾ ॥੨॥
azeemo faheemo zameeno zamaa |2|
He is magnanimous and knows all in the earth and heavens(2)
ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦਮ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਕੋਹ ਕੈਬਰ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ॥
shuneedam sukhan koh kaibar azeem |
I have heard a Tale at the lofty Khaiber Mountains
ਕਿ ਅਫ਼ਗਾ ਯਕੇ ਬੂਦ ਓ ਜਾ ਰਹੀਮ ॥੩॥
ki afagaa yake bood o jaa raheem |3|
There lived a Pathan whose name was Raheem(3)
ਯਕੇ ਬਾਨੂਏ ਬੂਦ ਓ ਹਮ ਚੁ ਮਾਹ ॥
yake baanooe bood o ham chu maah |
He had a wife who was as delightful as moon
ਕੁਨਦ ਦੀਦਨ ਸ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤ ਗ਼ਰਦਨ ਜ਼ਿ ਸ਼ਾਹ ॥੪॥
kunad deedan sharishat garadan zi shaah |4|
Her looks alone were homicidal for many a Princes(4)
ਦੋ ਅਬਰੂ ਚੁ ਅਬਰੇ ਬਹਾਰਾ ਕੁਨਦ ॥
do abaroo chu abare bahaaraa kunad |
Like the clouds of rainy-season
ਬਮਿਯਗਾ ਚੁ ਅਜ਼ ਤੀਰ ਬਾਰਾ ਕੁਨਦ ॥੫॥
bamiyagaa chu az teer baaraa kunad |5|
her eyelashes had electrifying effect Which struck them (the princes) like arrows(5)
ਰੁਖ਼ੇ ਚੂੰ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਿਹਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਰਾ ॥
rukhe choon khalaasee dihad maeh raa |
The shine from her face made them to forget even the moon
ਬਹਾਰੇ ਗੁਲਿਸਤਾ ਦਿਹਦ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਰਾ ॥੬॥
bahaare gulisataa dihad shaeh raa |6|
To all the Princes she was epitome of the garden in the spring(6)
ਬ ਅਬਰੂ ਕਮਾਨੇ ਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਨਾਜ਼ਨੀਂ ॥
b abaroo kamaane shudaa naazaneen |
Her eyelids were twined like a bow
ਬ ਚਸ਼ਮਸ਼ ਜ਼ਨਦ ਕੈਬਰੈ ਕਹਰਗੀਂ ॥੭॥
b chashamash zanad kaibarai kaharageen |7|
And they shot out calamitous arrows(7)
ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦਮ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਕੋਹ ਕੈਬਰ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ॥
shuneedam sukhan koh kaibar azeem |
Her looks accorded the ecstasy of wine
ਗੁਲਿਸਤਾ ਕੁਨਦ ਬੂਮ ਸ਼ੋਰੀਦ ਦਸਤ ॥੮॥
gulisataa kunad boom shoreed dasat |8|
And as well as desolated the blooming gardens(8)
ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਜਮਾਲੋ ਕਮਾਲੋ ਹੁਸਨ ॥
khushe khush jamaalo kamaalo husan |
She was ravishingly beautiful and surpassed all norms of exquisiteness
ਬ ਸੂਰਤ ਜਵਾਨਸਤ ਫ਼ਿਕਰੇ ਕੁਹਨ ॥੯॥
b soorat javaanasat fikare kuhan |9|
She was graceful no doubt but she possessed archaic thought(9)
ਯਕੇ ਹਸਨ ਖ਼ਾ ਬੂਦ ਓ ਜਾ ਫ਼ਗਾ ॥
yake hasan khaa bood o jaa fagaa |
There lived a Pathan
ਬਦਾਨਸ਼ ਹਮੀ ਬੂਦ ਅਕਲਸ਼ ਜਵਾ ॥੧੦॥
badaanash hamee bood akalash javaa |10|
called Hassan Khan at the same place The wisdom of his thought was quite mature(10)
ਕੁਨਦ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਬਾ ਹਮਹ ਯਕ ਦਿਗਰ ॥
kunad dosatee baa hamah yak digar |
They both loved each other so much
ਕਿ ਲੈਲੀ ਵ ਮਜਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਿਜ਼ਲ ਗਸ਼ਤ ਸਰ ॥੧੧॥
ki lailee v majanoo khizal gashat sar |11|
That even Majnu (Romeo) and Laila (Juliet) would have been envious of them(11)
ਚੁ ਬਾ ਯਕ ਦਿਗ਼ਰ ਹਮ ਚੁਨੀ ਗਸ਼ਤ ਮਸਤ ॥
chu baa yak digar ham chunee gashat masat |
The love in them became so intense
ਚੁ ਪਾ ਅਜ਼ ਰਕਾਬੋ ਇਨਾ ਰਫ਼ਤ ਦਸਤ ॥੧੨॥
chu paa az rakaabo inaa rafat dasat |12|
That they lost the control of reins and stirrups(12)
ਤਲਬ ਕਰਦ ਓ ਖ਼ਾਨਏ ਖ਼ਿਲਵਤੇ ॥
talab karad o khaane khilavate |
She invited him home all alone
ਮਿਯਾ ਆਮਦਸ਼ ਜੋ ਬਦਨ ਸ਼ਹਵਤੇ ॥੧੩॥
miyaa aamadash jo badan shahavate |13|
And seeing him she was over-powered with lust(13)
ਹਮੀਂ ਜੁਫ਼ਤ ਖ਼ੁਰਦੰਦ ਦੁ ਸੇ ਚਾਰ ਮਾਹ ॥
hameen jufat khuradand du se chaar maah |
When eating and drinking
ਖ਼ਬਰ ਕਰਦ ਜੋ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨੇ ਨਿਜ਼ਦ ਸ਼ਾਹ ॥੧੪॥
khabar karad jo dushamane nizad shaah |14|
two three and four months had passed by One of their enemies informed the Master(14)
ਬ ਹੈਰਤ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਫ਼ਗਾਨੇ ਰਹੀਮ ॥
b hairat daraamad fagaane raheem |
Raheem Khan Pathan flew into rage
ਕਸ਼ੀਦਨ ਯਕੇ ਤੇਗ਼ ਗਰਰਾ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ॥੧੫॥
kasheedan yake teg gararaa azeem |15|
And roaring drew his sword from the scabbard(15)
ਚੁ ਖ਼ਬਰਸ਼ ਰਸੀਦੋ ਕਿ ਆਮਦ ਸ਼ੌਹਰ ॥
chu khabarash raseedo ki aamad shauahar |
When she received the news that her husband was coming
ਹੁਮਾ ਯਾਰ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਰਾ ਬਿਜ਼ਦ ਤੇਗ਼ ਸਰ ॥੧੬॥
humaa yaar khud raa bizad teg sar |16|
She killed that man with a sword(16)
ਹਮਹਿ ਗੋਸ਼ਤੋ ਦੇਗ਼ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿਹਾਦ ॥
hameh goshato deg andar nihaad |
She put his meat in a saucepan
ਮਸਾਲਯ ਬਿਅੰਦਾਖ਼ਤ ਆਤਸ਼ ਬਿਦਾਦ ॥੧੭॥
masaalay biandaakhat aatash bidaad |17|
added spices And put it on fire(17)
ਸ਼ੌਹਰ ਰਾ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਨੀਦ ਬਾਕੀ ਬਿਮਾਦ ॥
shauahar raa khuraaneed baakee bimaad |
She served that cooked meat to her husband
ਹਮਹ ਨੌਕਰਾ ਰਾ ਜ਼ਿਆਫ਼ਤ ਕੁਨਾਦ ॥੧੮॥
hamah nauakaraa raa ziaafat kunaad |18|
With what was left over she entertained the servants(18)
ਚੁ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਗਸ਼ਤ ਸ਼ੌਹਰ ਨ ਦੀਦਸ਼ ਚੁ ਨਰ ॥
chu khush gashat shauahar na deedash chu nar |
Her husband was satisfied that there was no other person there
ਬਕੁਸ਼ਤਾ ਕਸੇ ਰਾ ਕਿ ਦਾਦਸ਼ ਖ਼ਬਰ ॥੧੯॥
bakushataa kase raa ki daadash khabar |19|
He went back and killed the person who had brought the news(19)
ਬਿਦਿਹ ਸਾਕੀਯਾ ਸਾਗ਼ਰੇ ਸਬਜ਼ ਗੂੰ ॥
bidih saakeeyaa saagare sabaz goon |
‘Oh! Saki Give me the cup full of green (liquid)
ਕਿ ਮਾਰਾ ਬਕਾਰਸਤ ਜੰਗ ਅੰਦਰੂੰ ॥੨੦॥
ki maaraa bakaarasat jang andaroon |20|
‘Which I need at the time of struggle(20)
ਲਬਾਲਬ ਬਕੁਨ ਦਮ ਬਦਮ ਨੋਸ਼ ਕੁਨ ॥
labaalab bakun dam badam nosh kun |
‘Fill it up to the brim so that I can drink it with every breath
ਗ਼ਮੇ ਹਰ ਦੁ ਆਲਮ ਫ਼ਰਾਮੋਸ਼ ਕੁਨ ॥੨੧॥੧੨॥
game har du aalam faraamosh kun |21|12|
‘And forget the afflictions of both the worlds(21)(12)
ਜਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਿਹ ਭਜੁ ਰੇ ਤੈ ਮੀਤ ॥
jih simarat gat paaeeai tih bhaj re tai meet |
Remembering Him in meditation, salvation is attained; vibrate and meditate on Him, O my friend.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਅਉਧ ਘਟਤ ਹੈ ਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa aaudh ghattat hai neet |10|
Says Nanak, listen, mind: your life is passing away! ||10||
ਪਾਂਚ ਤਤ ਕੋ ਤਨੁ ਰਚਿਓ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਚਤੁਰ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥
paanch tat ko tan rachio jaanahu chatur sujaan |
Your body is made up of the five elements; you are clever and wise - know this well.
ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਲੀਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੧॥
jih te upajio naanakaa leen taeh mai maan |11|
Believe it - you shall merge once again into the One, O Nanak, from whom you originated. ||11||
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਬਸੈ ਸੰਤਨ ਕਹਿਓ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥
ghatt ghatt mai har joo basai santan kahio pukaar |
The Dear Lord abides in each and every heart; the Saints proclaim this as true.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਭਜੁ ਮਨਾ ਭਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥
kahu naanak tih bhaj manaa bhau nidh utareh paar |12|
Says Nanak, meditate and vibrate upon Him, and you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||12||
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਿਹ ਪਰਸੈ ਨਹੀ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
sukh dukh jih parasai nahee lobh mohu abhimaan |
One who is not touched by pleasure or pain, greed, emotional attachment and egotistical pride
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਸੋ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੧੩॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa so moorat bhagavaan |13|
- says Nanak, listen, mind: he is the very image of God. ||13||
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਿਹਿ ਕੰਚਨ ਲੋਹ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥
ausatat nindiaa naeh jihi kanchan loh samaan |
One who is beyond praise and slander, who looks upon gold and iron alike
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੈ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੧੪॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa mukat taeh tai jaan |14|
- says Nanak, listen, mind: know that such a person is liberated. ||14||
ਹਰਖੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥
harakh sog jaa kai nahee bairee meet samaan |
One who is not affected by pleasure or pain, who looks upon friend and enemy alike
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੈ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੧੫॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa mukat taeh tai jaan |15|
- says Nanak, listen, mind: know that such a person is liberated. ||15||
ਭੈ ਕਾਹੂ ਕਉ ਦੇਤ ਨਹਿ ਨਹਿ ਭੈ ਮਾਨਤ ਆਨ ॥
bhai kaahoo kau det neh neh bhai maanat aan |
One who does not frighten anyone, and who is not afraid of anyone else
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਖਾਨਿ ॥੧੬॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa giaanee taeh bakhaan |16|
- says Nanak, listen, mind: call him spiritually wise. ||16||
ਜਿਹਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਗਲੀ ਤਜੀ ਲੀਓ ਭੇਖ ਬੈਰਾਗ ॥
jihi bikhiaa sagalee tajee leeo bhekh bairaag |
One who has forsaken all sin and corruption, who wears the robes of neutral detachment
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਨਰ ਮਾਥੈ ਭਾਗੁ ॥੧੭॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa tih nar maathai bhaag |17|
- says Nanak, listen, mind: good destiny is written on his forehead. ||17||
ਜਿਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਤਜੀ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਭਇਓ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥
jihi maaeaa mamataa tajee sabh te bheo udaas |
One who renounces Maya and possessiveness and is detached from everything
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧੮॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa tih ghatt braham nivaas |18|
- says Nanak, listen, mind: God abides in his heart. ||18||
ਜਿਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਿ ॥
jihi praanee haumai tajee karataa raam pachhaan |
That mortal, who forsakes egotism, and realizes the Creator Lord
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਰੁ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੯॥
kahu naanak vahu mukat nar ih man saachee maan |19|
- says Nanak, that person is liberated; O mind, know this as true. ||19||
ਭੈ ਨਾਸਨ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਨ ਕਲਿ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
bhai naasan duramat haran kal mai har ko naam |
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is the Destroyer of fear, the Eradicator of evil-mindedness.
ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਜੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੈ ਸਫਲ ਹੋਹਿ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਮ ॥੨੦॥
nis din jo naanak bhajai safal hohi tih kaam |20|
Night and day, O Nanak, whoever vibrates and meditates on the Lord's Name, sees all of his works brought to fruition. ||20||
ਜਿਹਬਾ ਗੁਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਕਰਨ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
jihabaa gun gobind bhajahu karan sunahu har naam |
Vibrate with your tongue the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe; with your ears, hear the Lord's Name.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਪਰਹਿ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਧਾਮ ॥੨੧॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa pareh na jam kai dhaam |21|
Says Nanak, listen, man: you shall not have to go to the house of Death. ||21||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਤਜੈ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
jo praanee mamataa tajai lobh moh ahankaar |
That mortal who renounces possessiveness, greed, emotional attachment and egotism
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਨ ਤਰੈ ਅਉਰਨ ਲੇਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥੨੨॥
kahu naanak aapan tarai aauran let udhaar |22|
- says Nanak, he himself is saved, and he saves many others as well. ||22||
ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਅਰੁ ਪੇਖਨਾ ਐਸੇ ਜਗ ਕਉ ਜਾਨਿ ॥
jiau supanaa ar pekhanaa aise jag kau jaan |
Like a dream and a show, so is this world, you must know.
ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੨੩॥
ein mai kachh saacho nahee naanak bin bhagavaan |23|
None of this is true, O Nanak, without God. ||23||
ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਡੋਲਤ ਨੀਤ ॥
nis din maaeaa kaarane praanee ddolat neet |
Night and day, for the sake of Maya, the mortal wanders constantly.
ਕੋਟਨ ਮੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਊ ਨਾਰਾਇਨੁ ਜਿਹ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੨੪॥
kottan mai naanak koaoo naaraaein jih cheet |24|
Among millions, O Nanak, there is scarcely anyone, who keeps the Lord in his consciousness. ||24||
ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨੀਤ ॥
jaise jal te budabudaa upajai binasai neet |
As the bubbles in the water well up and disappear again,
ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਤੈਸੇ ਰਚੀ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਮੀਤ ॥੨੫॥
jag rachanaa taise rachee kahu naanak sun meet |25|
so is the universe created; says Nanak, listen, O my friend! ||25||
ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
praanee kachhoo na chetee mad maaeaa kai andh |
The mortal does not remember the Lord, even for a moment; he is blinded by the wine of Maya.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਪਰਤ ਤਾਹਿ ਜਮ ਫੰਧ ॥੨੬॥
kahu naanak bin har bhajan parat taeh jam fandh |26|
Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, he is caught by the noose of Death. ||26||
ਜਉ ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਚਾਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਰਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਲੇਹ ॥
jau sukh kau chaahai sadaa saran raam kee leh |
If you yearn for eternal peace, then seek the Sanctuary of the Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਦੁਰਲਭ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹ ॥੨੭॥
kahu naanak sun re manaa duralabh maanukh deh |27|
Says Nanak, listen, mind: this human body is difficult to obtain. ||27||
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਧਾਵਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਗ ਅਜਾਨ ॥
maaeaa kaaran dhaavahee moorakh log ajaan |
For the sake of Maya, the fools and ignorant people run all around.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਨ ॥੨੮॥
kahu naanak bin har bhajan birathaa janam siraan |28|
Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, life passes away uselessly. ||28||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਭਜੈ ਰੂਪ ਰਾਮ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
jo praanee nis din bhajai roop raam tih jaan |
That mortal who meditates and vibrates upon the Lord night and day - know him to be the embodiment of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੨੯॥
har jan har antar nahee naanak saachee maan |29|
There is no difference between the Lord and the humble servant of the Lord; O Nanak, know this as true. ||29||
