ੴ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹ ॥
ik oankaar vaahiguroo jee kee fatah |
The Lord is One and the Victory is of the True Guru.
ਖ਼ੁਦਾਵੰਦ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਹੇ ਦਿਲ ਕਰਾਰ ॥
khudaavand bakhashindahe dil karaar |
God endows tranquillity,
ਰਜ਼ਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦਿਹੋ ਨੌਬਹਾਰ ॥੧॥
razaa bakhash rozee diho nauabahaar |1|
He grants the will to believe, provides living and contentment.(1)
ਕਿ ਮੀਰ ਅਸਤ ਪੀਰ ਅਸਤ ਹਰ ਦੋ ਜਹਾ ॥
ki meer asat peer asat har do jahaa |
He is Sovereign of both the worlds,
ਖ਼ੁਦਾਵੰਦ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਹ ਹਰ ਯਕ ਅਮਾ ॥੨॥
khudaavand bakhashindah har yak amaa |2|
He keeps us all away from afflictions.(2)
ਹਿਕਾਯਤ ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦੇਮ ਸ਼ਾਹੇ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ॥
hikaayat shuneedem shaahe azeem |
Now listen to the Tale of King Azam,
ਕਿ ਹੁਸਨਲ ਜਮਾਲ ਅਸਤੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਰੀਮ ॥੩॥
ki husanal jamaal asat saahib kareem |3|
Who was magnanimous and compassionate.(3)
ਕਿ ਸੂਰਤ ਜਮਾਲ ਅਸਤੁ ਹੁਸਨਲ ਤਮਾਮ ॥
ki soorat jamaal asat husanal tamaam |
With perfect posture, his countenance radiated.
ਹਮਹ ਰੋਜ਼ ਆਸ਼ਾਯਸ਼ੇ ਰੋਦ ਜਾਮ ॥੪॥
hamah roz aashaayashe rod jaam |4|
Whole day he used to spend listening to the musical renderings of Ragas, and quaffing cups of wine.(4)
ਕਿ ਸਰਹੰਗ ਦਾਨਸ਼ ਜਿ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ਾਨਗੀ ॥
ki sarahang daanash ji farazaanagee |
He was renown for his wisdom,
ਕਿ ਅਜ਼ ਮਸਲਿਹਤ ਮੌਜ ਮਰਦਾਨਗੀ ॥੫॥
ki az masalihat mauaj maradaanagee |5|
And was famous for magnanimity of his bravery.(5)
ਵਜ਼ਾ ਬਾਨੂਏ ਹਮ ਚੁ ਮਾਹੇ ਜਵਾ ॥
vazaa baanooe ham chu maahe javaa |
He had a moon-like pretty wife,
ਕਿ ਕੁਰਬਾ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਹਰ ਕਸੇ ਨਾਜ਼ਦਾ ॥੬॥
ki kurabaa shavad har kase naazadaa |6|
The people admired the exquisiteness of his preference.(6)
ਕਿ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਰੰਗ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਖ਼ੋਇ ਓ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਜਮਾਲ ॥
ki khush rang khush khoe o khush jamaal |
She was very beautiful and possessed sober temperament with captivating features.
ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਖ਼੍ਵਾਰਗੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਖ਼ਿਯਾਲ ॥੭॥
khush aavaaz khush khvaaragee khush khiyaal |7|
Also she enjoyed sweat voice, dressed herself profusely, and was chaste in her thought.(7)
ਬ ਦੀਦਨ ਕਿ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਖ਼ੋਇ ਖ਼ੂਬੀ ਜਹਾ ॥
b deedan ki khush khoe khoobee jahaa |
ਜ਼ਿ ਹਰਫ਼ਾਤ ਕਰਦਨ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੋ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਜ਼ੁਬਾ ॥੮॥
zi harafaat karadan khusho khush zubaa |8|
ਦੁ ਪਿਸਰਸ਼ ਅਜ਼ਾ ਬੂਦ ਚੂੰ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ ਮਾਹ ॥
du pisarash azaa bood choon shamash maah |
She had two sons, called Sun and Moon.
ਕਿ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਤਬੀਯਤ ਹਕੀਕਤ ਗਵਾਹ ॥੯॥
ki rauashan tabeeyat hakeekat gavaah |9|
Intellectually content, they always aspired for the truth.(9)
ਕਿ ਗੁਸਤਾਖ਼ ਦਸਤ ਅਸਤ ਚਾਲਾਕ ਜੰਗ ॥
ki gusataakh dasat asat chaalaak jang |
Being very fast in their hand movements, they were clever in fights.
ਬ ਵਕਤੇ ਤਰਦਦ ਚੁ ਸ਼ੇਰੋ ਨਿਹੰਗ ॥੧੦॥
b vakate taradad chu shero nihang |10|
They were like the roaring lions and vicious like crocodiles.(10)
ਦੁ ਪੀਲ ਅਫ਼ਕਨੋ ਹਮ ਚੁ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਅਫ਼ਕਨ ਅਸਤ ॥
du peel afakano ham chu sher afakan asat |
Those lion-hearted could subdue the elephants,
ਬ ਵਕਤੇ ਵਗਾ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਰੋਈਂ ਤਨ ਅਸਤ ॥੧੧॥
b vakate vagaa sher roeen tan asat |11|
And during the wars they became embodiment of steel.(11)
ਯਕੇ ਖ਼ੂਬ ਰੋਇ ਓ ਦਿਗ਼ਰ ਤਨ ਚੁ ਸੀਮ ॥
yake khoob roe o digar tan chu seem |
Not only they had attractive features, their bodies gleamed like silver.
ਦੁ ਸੂਰਤ ਸਜ਼ਾਵਾਰ ਆਜ਼ਮ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ॥੧੨॥
du soorat sazaavaar aazam azeem |12|
Both the figures called for highest acclaims.(12)
ਵਜ਼ਾ ਮਾਦਰੇ ਬਰਕਸ ਆਸੁਫ਼ਤਹ ਗਸ਼ਤ ॥
vazaa maadare barakas aasafateh gashat |
Their mother fell in love with a stranger,
ਚੁ ਮਰਦਸਤ ਗੁਲ ਹਮ ਚੁਨੀ ਗੁਲ ਪ੍ਰਸਤ ॥੧੩॥
chu maradasat gul ham chunee gul prasat |13|
Because that man was like a flower, and their mother was in search of such a flower.(13)
ਸ਼ਬੰ ਗਾਹ ਦਰ ਖ਼ਾਬਗਾਹ ਆਮਦੰਦ ॥
shaban gaah dar khaabagaah aamadand |
They had just come into their sleeping chamber,
ਕਿ ਜ਼ੋਰਾਵਰਾ ਦਰ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਆਮਦੰਦ ॥੧੪॥
ki zoraavaraa dar nigaah aamadand |14|
When they caught sight of both the undaunted ones.(14)
ਬੁਖ਼ਾਦੰਦ ਪਸ ਪੇਸ਼ ਖ਼ੁਰਦੋ ਕਲਾ ॥
bukhaadand pas pesh khurado kalaa |
They (their mother and her lover) called in both the younger and older one,
ਮਯੋ ਰੋਦ ਰਾਮਸ਼ ਗਿਰਾ ਰਾ ਹੁਮਾ ॥੧੫॥
mayo rod raamash giraa raa humaa |15|
And entertained them with wine and music through the Raga Singers.(15)
ਬਿਦਾਨਿਸਤ ਕਿ ਅਜ਼ ਮਸਤੀਯਸ਼ ਮਸਤ ਗਸ਼ਤ ॥
bidaanisat ki az masateeyash masat gashat |
When she realised that they were absolutely intoxicated,
ਬਿਜ਼ਦ ਤੇਗ਼ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਦਸਤ ਹਰ ਦੋ ਸ਼ਿਕਸਤ ॥੧੬॥
bizad teg khud dasat har do shikasat |16|
She stood up and cut their heads with the sword.(16)
ਬਿਜ਼ਦ ਹਰ ਦੋ ਦਸਤਸ਼ ਸਰੇ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ਜ਼ੋਰ ॥
bizad har do dasatash sare khesh zor |
Then she started to beat her head with both her hands,
ਬ ਜੁੰਬਸ਼ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਬ ਕਰਦੰਦ ਸ਼ੋਰ ॥੧੭॥
b junbash daraamad b karadand shor |17|
And began to tremble and shout very loudly,(17)
ਬਿਗੋਯਦ ਕਿ ਏ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਨ ਪਾਕ ॥
bigoyad ki e musalamaanaan paak |
She shouted, ‘Oh, you the pious Muslims,
ਚਿਰਾ ਚੂੰ ਕਿ ਕੁਸ਼ਤੀ ਅਜ਼ੀ ਜਾਮਹ ਚਾਕ ॥੧੮॥
chiraa choon ki kushatee azee jaamah chaak |18|
‘How they have cut each other like the scissors cut the clothes?(18)
ਬਿਖ਼ੁਰਦੰਦ ਮਯ ਹਰ ਦੁ ਆਂ ਮਸਤ ਗਸ਼ਤ ॥
bikhuradand may har du aan masat gashat |
‘Both of them drenched themselves in wine,
ਗਿਰਫ਼ਤੰਦ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਪੌਲਾਦ ਦਸਤ ॥੧੯॥
girafatand shamasher paualaad dasat |19|
‘And took the swords in their hands,(19)
ਕਿ ਈਂ ਰਾ ਬਿਜ਼ਦ ਆਂ ਬਈ ਆਂ ਜਦੰਦ ॥
ki een raa bizad aan bee aan jadand |
‘One hit the other and, right in front of my eyes,
ਬ ਦੀਦਹ ਮਰਾ ਹਰ ਦੁ ਈਂ ਕੁਸ਼ਤਹ ਅੰਦ ॥੨੦॥
b deedah maraa har du een kushatah and |20|
they murdered each other.(20)
ਦਰੇਗਾ ਮਰਾ ਜਾ ਜ਼ਿਮੀ ਹਮ ਨ ਦਾਦ ॥
daregaa maraa jaa zimee ham na daad |
‘Hai, why didn’t earth give way to obscure myself in there,
ਨ ਦਹਲੀਜ਼ ਦੋਜ਼ਖ਼ ਮਰਾ ਰਹ ਕੁਸ਼ਾਦ ॥੨੧॥
n dahaleez dozakh maraa reh kushaad |21|
‘Even the door of the hell has been closed for me.(21)
ਦੁ ਚਸ਼ਮੇ ਮਰਾ ਈਂ ਚਿ ਗਰਦੀਦ ਈਂ ॥
du chashame maraa een chi garadeed een |
‘Down with my eyes,
ਕਿ ਈਂ ਦੀਦਹੇ ਖ਼ੂਨ ਈਂ ਦੀਦ ਈਂ ॥੨੨॥
ki een deedahe khoon een deed een |22|
‘The eyes which were watching when they killed each other.(22)
ਬਿਹਜ਼ ਮਨ ਤਨੇ ਤਰਕ ਦੁਨੀਯਾ ਕੁਨਮ ॥
bihaz man tane tarak duneeyaa kunam |
‘You (my boys) abandoned this world,
ਫ਼ਕੀਰੇ ਸ਼ਵਮ ਮੁਲਕ ਚੀਂ ਮੇ ਰਵਮ ॥੨੩॥
fakeere shavam mulak cheen me ravam |23|
‘I will, now, become an ascetic and go to the Country of China.’(23)
ਬਿ ਗ਼ੁਫਤ ਈਂ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਰਾ ਕੁਨਦ ਜਾਮਹ ਚਾਕ ॥
bi gufat een sukhan raa kunad jaamah chaak |
Pronouncing thus, she tore off her clothes,
ਰਵਾ ਸ਼ੁਦ ਸੂਏ ਦਸਤਖ਼ਤ ਚਾਕ ਚਾਕ ॥੨੪॥
ravaa shud sooe dasatakhat chaak chaak |24|
And proceeded towards the bewilderment.(24)
ਕਿ ਓ ਜਾ ਬਦੀਦੰਦ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਖ਼ਾਬਗਾਹ ॥
ki o jaa badeedand khush khaabagaah |
She went to a location where there was restful place.
ਨਿਸ਼ਸਤਹ ਅਸਤੁ ਬਰ ਗਾਉ ਬਾ ਜ਼ਨ ਚੁ ਮਾਹ ॥੨੫॥
nishasatah asat bar gaau baa zan chu maah |25|
There, on the back of a bullock, she saw Shiva, along with women as pretty as the moon.(25)
ਬ ਪੁਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਓ ਰਾ ਕਿ ਏ ਨੇਕ ਜ਼ਨ ॥
b purasheed o raa ki e nek zan |
He asked her, ‘Oh, you the kind woman,
ਹਮਾਯੂ ਦਰਖ਼ਤੇ ਚੁ ਸਰਵੇ ਚਮਨ ॥੨੬॥
hamaayoo darakhate chu sarave chaman |26|
‘Slim and tall like a cypress tree, who are you?(26)
ਕਿ ਹੂਰੋ ਪਰੀ ਤੋ ਚੁ ਨੂਰੇ ਜਹਾ ॥
ki hooro paree to chu noore jahaa |
‘Are you either a Soul or a Fairy?
ਕਿ ਮਾਹੇ ਫ਼ਲਕ ਆਫ਼ਤਾਬੇ ਯਮਾ ॥੨੭॥
ki maahe falak aafataabe yamaa |27|
‘Are you either the moon in the sky or sun over the earth?’(27)
ਨ ਹੂਰੋ ਪਰੀਅਮ ਨ ਨੂਰੇ ਜਹਾ ॥
n hooro pareeam na noore jahaa |
(She replied), ‘Neither I am Fairy, nor an Enlightener of the world.
ਮਨਮ ਦੁਖ਼ਤਰੇ ਸ਼ਾਹਿਜਾ ਬਿਲਸਿਤਾ ॥੨੮॥
manam dukhatare shaahijaa bilasitaa |28|
‘I am the daughter of the King of Zablistan.’(28)
ਬ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਸ਼ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਪਰਸਤਸ਼ ਨ ਮੂਦ ॥
b purashash daraamad parasatash na mood |
Then, on learning (that he was god Shiva), she supplicated,
ਬਨਿਜ਼ਦਸ਼ ਜ਼ੁਬਾ ਰਾ ਬ ਫ਼ੁਰਸਤ ਕਸੂਦ ॥੨੯॥
banizadash zubaa raa b furasat kasood |29|
Opened her mouth, and narrated (her story) very gently.(29)
ਬ ਦੀਦਨ ਤੁਰਾ ਮਨ ਬਸ ਆਜ਼ੁਰਗਦਹਅਮ ॥
b deedan turaa man bas aazuragadaham |
(Shiva said), ‘I am much afflicted on seeing you.
ਬਿਗੋਈ ਤੁ ਹਰ ਚੀਜ਼ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀਦਹਅਮ ॥੩੦॥
bigoee tu har cheez bakhasheedaham |30|
‘Whatever you desire I will grant you.’(30)
ਬ ਹੰਗਾਮ ਪੀਰੀ ਜਵਾ ਮੇ ਸ਼ਵਮ ॥
b hangaam peeree javaa me shavam |
(She said), ‘I should get out of the old age and become young again,
ਬ ਮੁਲਕੇ ਹੁਮਾ ਯਾਰ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਵਮ ॥੩੧॥
b mulake humaa yaar man meravam |31|
‘So that I can go to the country of my lover.‘(31)
ਬਦਾਸ਼ਨ ਤੁ ਦਾਨੀ ਵਗਰ ਈਂ ਵਫ਼ਾ ॥
badaashan tu daanee vagar een vafaa |
(Shiva said), ‘If you think this appropriate according to your intelligence (then I will grant you the boon),
ਬਯਾਦ ਆਮਦਸ਼ ਬਦਤਰ ਈਂ ਬੇਵਫ਼ਾ ॥੩੨॥
bayaad aamadash badatar een bevafaa |32|
‘Although it may have come in your mind very menially.’(32)
ਵਜ਼ਾ ਜਾ ਬਿਆਮਦ ਬਗਿਰਦੇ ਚੁਚਾਹ ॥
vazaa jaa biaamad bagirade chuchaah |
After receiving the boon, she came to the well,
ਕਜ਼ਾ ਜਾ ਅਜ਼ੋ ਬੂਦ ਨਖ਼ਜ਼ੀਰ ਗਾਹ ॥੩੩॥
kazaa jaa azo bood nakhazeer gaah |33|
Where her lover used to come for hunting.(33)
ਬਸੈਰੇ ਦਿਗ਼ਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਆਮਦ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ॥
basaire digar roz aamad shikaar |
Next day she came across the hunter,
ਚੁ ਮਿਨ ਕਾਲ ਅਜ਼ ਬਾਸ਼ਹੇ ਨੌ ਬਹਾਰ ॥੩੪॥
chu min kaal az baashahe nau bahaar |34|
Who had sharp features like the sparrow-hawk in the spring.(34)
ਕਿ ਬਰਖ਼ਾਸਤ ਪੇਸ਼ਸ਼ ਗਵਜ਼ਨੇ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ॥
ki barakhaasat peshash gavazane azeem |
On seeing him, she started to run forward like a wild cow.
ਰਵਾ ਕਰਦ ਅਸਪਸ਼ ਚੁ ਬਾਦੇ ਨਸੀਮ ॥੩੫॥
ravaa karad asapash chu baade naseem |35|
And he galloped his horse at the speed of an arrow.(35)
ਬਸੇ ਦੂਰ ਗਸ਼ਤਸ਼ ਨ ਮਾਦਹ ਦਿਗਰ ॥
base door gashatash na maadah digar |
They went quite far,
ਨ ਆਬੋ ਨ ਤੋਸਹ ਨ ਅਜ਼ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਖ਼ਬਰ ॥੩੬॥
n aabo na tosah na az khud khabar |36|
Where there was no water and no food, and they were lost in themselves.(36)
ਵਜ਼ਾ ਓ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਬਾ ਤਨੇ ਨੌਜਵਾ ॥
vazaa o shavad baa tane nauajavaa |
She proceeded and bodily joined that young-man,
ਨ ਹੂਰੋ ਪਰੀ ਆਫ਼ਤਾਬੇ ਜਹਾ ॥੩੭॥
n hooro paree aafataabe jahaa |37|
As there was none other like him, neither soul nor body.(37)
ਬ ਦੀਦਨ ਵਜ਼ਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਆਸ਼ੁਫ਼ਤਹ ਗਸ਼ਤ ॥
b deedan vazaa shaeh aashafateh gashat |
Immediately on her sight, he had fallen in love with her,
ਕਿ ਅਜ਼ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਰਫ਼ਤ ਵ ਅਜ਼ ਹੋਸ਼ ਦਸਤ ॥੩੮॥
ki az khud khabar rafat v az hosh dasat |38|
And lost his senses and consciousness (by meeting her).(38)
ਕਿ ਕਸਮੇ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਮਨ ਤੁਰਾ ਮੇ ਕੁਨਮ ॥
ki kasame khudaa man turaa me kunam |
(He said,) ‘I swear by God that I must do (make love) with you,
ਕਿ ਅਜ਼ ਜਾਨ ਜਾਨੀ ਤੁ ਬਰਤਰ ਕੁਨਮ ॥੩੯॥
ki az jaan jaanee tu baratar kunam |39|
‘Because I cherish you more than my own life.’(39)
ਉਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਉ ਚੂੰ ਦੁ ਸੇ ਚਾਰ ਬਾਰ ॥
auzar kardau choon du se chaar baar |
The woman, just to show off, refused a few times,
ਹਮ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਬਗ਼ੁਫ਼ਤਮ ਵਜ਼ਾ ਕਰਦ ਕਾਰ ॥੪੦॥
ham aakhar bagafatam vazaa karad kaar |40|
But, at the end she acquiesced.(40)
ਬੁਬੀਂ ਗਰਦਸ਼ੇ ਬੇਵਫ਼ਾਈ ਜ਼ਮਾ ॥
bubeen garadashe bevafaaee zamaa |
(The Poet says,) Look at the infidelity of the world,
ਕਿ ਖ਼ੂੰਨੇ ਸਿਤਾਦਸ਼ ਨ ਮਾਦਸ਼ ਨਿਸ਼ਾ ॥੪੧॥
ki khoone sitaadash na maadash nishaa |41|
Siavash (sons of the ruler) were annihilated without any vestiges.(41)
ਕੁਜਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਕੈ ਖ਼ੁਸਰਵੋ ਜ਼ਾਮ ਜ਼ਮ ॥
kujaa shaeh kai khusaravo zaam zam |
Where have gone the Kings, Khusro and Jamshed?
ਕੁਜਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਆਦਮ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਖ਼ਤੰਮ ॥੪੨॥
kujaa shaeh aadam muhamad khatam |42|
Where are Adam and Muhammad?(42)
ਫ਼ਰੇਦੂੰ ਕੁਜਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਨ ਇਸਫ਼ੰਦਯਾਰ ॥
faredoon kujaa shaahan isafandayaar |
Where have vanished the (legendary) kings, Faraid, Bahmin and Asfand?
ਨ ਦਾਰਾਬ ਦਾਰਾ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਸ਼ੁਮਾਰ ॥੪੩॥
n daaraab daaraa daraamad shumaar |43|
Neither Darab, nor Dara are esteemed.(43)
ਕੁਜਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਅਸਕੰਦਰੋ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ ॥
kujaa shaeh asakandaro sher shaah |
What happened to Alexander and Sher Shah?
ਕਿ ਯਕ ਹਮ ਨ ਮਾਦ ਅਸਤ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਹ ਬ ਜਾਹ ॥੪੪॥
ki yak ham na maad asat zindah b jaah |44|
None of them has survived.(44)
ਕੁਜਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਤੈਮੂਰ ਬਾਬਰ ਕੁਜਾਸਤ ॥
kujaa shaah taimoor baabar kujaasat |
How Temur Shah and Babar have dissipated?
ਹੁਮਾਯੂੰ ਕੁਜਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਅਕਬਰ ਕੁਜਾਸਤ ॥੪੫॥
humaayoon kujaa shaeh akabar kujaasat |45|

ਬਿਦਿਹ ਸਾਕੀਯਾ ਸੁਰਖ਼ ਰੰਗੇ ਫ਼ਿਰੰਗ ॥
bidih saakeeyaa surakh range firang |
(The poet says) ‘Oh! Saki. Give me the reddish wine of Europe.
ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਆਮਦ ਮਰਾ ਵਕਤ ਜ਼ਦ ਤੇਗ਼ ਜੰਗ ॥੪੬॥
khush aamad maraa vakat zad teg jang |46|
‘Which I would relish when I brandish the sword during the war.(46)
ਬ ਮਨ ਦਿਹ ਕਿ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਰਾ ਪਯੋਰਸ ਕੁਨਮ ॥
b man dih ki khud raa payoras kunam |
‘Give it to me so that I could contemplate,
ਬ ਤੇਗ਼ ਆਜ਼ਮਾਈਸ਼ ਕੋਹਸ ਕੁਨਮ ॥੪੭॥੮॥
b teg aazamaaeesh kohas kunam |47|8|
‘And with the sword annihilate (the evil forces).’(47)(8)

Third Mehl:
ਲਾਹੌਰ ਸਹਰੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੁ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਦਾ ਘਰੁ ॥੨੮॥
laahauar sehar amrit sar sifatee daa ghar |28|
The city of Lahore is a pool of ambrosial nectar, the home of praise. ||28||

ਉਦੋਸਾਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਨੀਸਾਨੀ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਅੰਨੀ ॥
audosaahai kiaa neesaanee tott na aavai anee |
What are the signs of a prosperous person? His stores of food never run out.
ਉਦੋਸੀਅ ਘਰੇ ਹੀ ਵੁਠੀ ਕੁੜਿਈਁ ਰੰਨੀ ਧੰਮੀ ॥
audoseea ghare hee vutthee kurriee ranee dhamee |
Prosperity dwells in his home, with the sounds of girls and women.
ਸਤੀ ਰੰਨੀ ਘਰੇ ਸਿਆਪਾ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਕੂੜੀ ਕੰਮੀ ॥
satee ranee ghare siaapaa rovan koorree kamee |
All the women of his home shout and cry over useless things.
ਜੋ ਲੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਟੇ ਦੰਮ ਸਹੰਮੀ ॥੨੯॥
jo levai so devai naahee khatte dam sahamee |29|
Whatever he takes, he does not give back. Seeking to earn more and more, he is troubled and uneasy. ||29||
ਪਬਰ ਤੂੰ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਕਵਲਾ ਕੰਚਨ ਵੰਨਿ ॥
pabar toon hareeaavalaa kavalaa kanchan van |
O lotus, your leaves were green, and your blossoms were gold.
ਕੈ ਦੋਖੜੈ ਸੜਿਓਹਿ ਕਾਲੀ ਹੋਈਆ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ॥
kai dokharrai sarriohi kaalee hoeea dehuree naanak mai tan bhang |
What pain has burnt you, and made your body black? O Nanak, my body is battered.
ਜਾਣਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾ ਲਹਾਂ ਜੈ ਸੇਤੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
jaanaa paanee naa lahaan jai setee meraa sang |
I have not received that water which I love.
ਜਿਤੁ ਡਿਠੈ ਤਨੁ ਪਰਫੁੜੈ ਚੜੈ ਚਵਗਣਿ ਵੰਨੁ ॥੩੦॥
jit dditthai tan parafurrai charrai chavagan van |30|
Seeing it, my body blossomed forth, and I was blessed with a deep and beautiful color. ||30||
ਰਜਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਪਹੁਚਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥
raj na koee jeeviaa pahuch na chaliaa koe |
No one lives long enough to accomplish all he wishes.
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜੀਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
giaanee jeevai sadaa sadaa suratee hee pat hoe |
Only the spiritually wise live forever; they are honored for their intuitive awareness.
ਸਰਫੈ ਸਰਫੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਏਵੈ ਗਈ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥
sarafai sarafai sadaa sadaa evai gee vihaae |
Bit by bit, life passes away, even though the mortal tries to hold it back.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਵਿਣੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਹੀ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੩੧॥
naanak kis no aakheeai vin puchhiaa hee lai jaae |31|
O Nanak, unto whom should we complain? Death takes one's life away without anyone's consent. ||31||
ਦੋਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਅਹੁ ਰਾਇ ਨੋ ਮਤਿ ਚਲੈ ਜਾਂ ਬੁਢਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
dos na deahu raae no mat chalai jaan budtaa hovai |
Do not blame the Sovereign Lord; when someone grows old, his intellect leaves him.
ਗਲਾਂ ਕਰੇ ਘਣੇਰੀਆ ਤਾਂ ਅੰਨੑੇ ਪਵਣਾ ਖਾਤੀ ਟੋਵੈ ॥੩੨॥
galaan kare ghanereea taan anae pavanaa khaatee ttovai |32|
The blind man talks and babbles, and then falls into the ditch. ||32||
ਪੂਰੇ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਘਟਿ ਵਧਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
poore kaa keea sabh kichh pooraa ghatt vadh kichh naahee |
All that the Perfect Lord does is perfect; there is not too little, or too much.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਐਸਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਪੂਰੇ ਮਾਂਹਿ ਸਮਾਂਹੀ ॥੩੩॥
naanak guramukh aisaa jaanai poore maanhi samaanhee |33|
O Nanak, knowing this as Gurmukh, the mortal merges into the Perfect Lord God. ||33||
