ੴ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹ ॥
ik oankaar vaahiguroo jee kee fatah |
The Lord is One and the Victory is of the True Guru.
ਖ਼ੁਦਾਵੰਦ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਹੇ ਦਿਲ ਕੁਸ਼ਾਇ ॥
khudaavand bakhashindahe dil kushaae |
God, Almighty is benevolent in forgiveness,
ਰਜ਼ਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦਿਹੋ ਰਹਿਨੁਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
razaa bakhash rozee diho rahinumaae |1|
He is Enlightener, Provider and Guide.(1)
ਨ ਫ਼ਉਜੋ ਨ ਫ਼ਰਸ਼ੋ ਨ ਫ਼ਰਰੋ ਨ ਫ਼ੂਰ ॥
n faujo na farasho na fararo na foor |
Neither He has an army nor luxurious living (no servants, no rugs and no materials).
ਖ਼ੁਦਾਵੰਦ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਹ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਜ਼ਹੂਰ ॥੨॥
khudaavand bakhashindah zaahar zahoor |2|
God, the Compassionate, is visible and manifested.(2)
ਹਿਕਾਯਤ ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦੇਮ ਦੁਖ਼ਤਰ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ॥
hikaayat shuneedem dukhatar vazeer |
Now, please listen to the tale of the daughter of a minister.
ਕਿ ਹੁਸਨਲ ਜਮਾਲ ਅਸਤ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਜ਼ਮੀਰ ॥੩॥
ki husanal jamaal asat rauashan zameer |3|
She was very pretty and possessed an enlightened mind.(3)
ਵਜਾ ਕੈਸਰੋ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਰੂਮੀ ਕੁਲਾਹ ॥
vajaa kaisaro shaeh roomee kulaah |
There lived a wandering Prince who had adorned himself with Cap (of honour) from Rome.
ਦਰਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਹ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੋ ਚੁ ਰਖ਼ਸਿੰਦਹ ਮਾਹ ॥੪॥
darakhashindah shamasho chu rakhasindah maah |4|
His splendour matched the sun but his nature was as serene as the Moon.(4)
ਯਕੇ ਰੋਜ਼ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਬਰਾਮਦ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ॥
yake roz rauashan baraamad shikaar |
Once, early in the morning he went out hunting.
ਹਮਹ ਯੂਜ਼ ਅਜ਼ ਬਾਜ਼ ਵ ਬਹਰੀ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ॥੫॥
hamah yooz az baaz v baharee hazaar |5|
He took with him a hound, a falcon and a hawk.(5)
ਬ ਪਹਿਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਮਦ ਬਨਖ਼ਜ਼ੀਰ ਗਾਹ ॥
b pahin andar aamad banakhazeer gaah |
He reached a desolate place of hunting.
ਬਿਜ਼ਦ ਗੇਰ ਆਹੂ ਬਸੇ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ ॥੬॥
bizad ger aahoo base sher shaah |6|
The Prince killed the lions, leopards and deer.(6)
ਦਿਗ਼ਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਮਗ਼ਰਬ ਦਰਆਮਦ ਦਲੇਰ ॥
digar shaah magarab daraamad daler |
There came another Raja from the South,
ਚੁ ਰਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਹ ਮਾਹੋ ਚੁ ਗ਼ੁਰਰਿੰਦਹ ਸ਼ੇਰ ॥੭॥
chu rakhashindah maaho chu gurarindah sher |7|
Who roared like a lion and his face gleamed like the moon.(7)
ਦੁ ਸ਼ਾਹੇ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਯਕੇ ਜਾਇ ਸਖ਼ਤ ॥
du shaahe daraamad yake jaae sakhat |
Both the rulers had approached an intricate terrain.
ਕਿਰਾ ਤੇਗ਼ ਯਾਰੀ ਦਿਹਦ ਨੇਕ ਬਖ਼ਤ ॥੮॥
kiraa teg yaaree dihad nek bakhat |8|
Are not the lucky ones only rescued through their swords?(8)
ਕਿਰਾ ਰੋਜ਼ ਇਕਬਾਲ ਯਾਰੀ ਦਿਹਦ ॥
kiraa roz ikabaal yaaree dihad |
Doesn’t an auspicious day facilitate one?
ਕਿ ਯਜ਼ਦਾ ਕਿਰਾ ਕਾਮਗਾਰੀ ਦਿਹਦ ॥੯॥
ki yazadaa kiraa kaamagaaree dihad |9|
Who is endowed aid by the God of gods?(9)
ਬਜੁੰਬਸ਼ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਦੁ ਸ਼ਾਹੇ ਦਲੇਰ ॥
bajunbash daraamad du shaahe daler |
Both the rulers (seeing each other) flew in the rage,
ਕਿ ਬਰ ਆਹੂਏ ਯਕ ਬਰਾਮਦ ਦੁ ਸ਼ੇਰ ॥੧੦॥
ki bar aahooe yak baraamad du sher |10|
Like the two lions that sprawl over a hunted deer.(10)
ਬਗੁਰਰੀਦਨ ਆਮਦ ਦੁ ਅਬਰੇ ਸਿਯਾਹ ॥
bagurareedan aamad du abare siyaah |
Thundering like the black clouds both jumped forward.
ਸਨਾਨੇ ਬਿਯੰਦਾਖ਼ਤ ਨੇਜ਼ਹ ਚੁ ਕਾਹ ॥੧੧॥
sanaane biyandaakhat nezah chu kaah |11|
Like the leaves flutter during the dust storm, the arrows started to fly.(11)
ਚੁਨਾ ਤੀਰ ਬਾਰਾਨ ਪਰਰਾ ਸ਼ੁਦਹ ॥
chunaa teer baaraan pararaa shudah |
The arrows flew in such density that,
ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂ ਆਸਮਾ ਪੁਰ ਆਂ ਜ਼ਿਕਰਸ਼ ਸ਼ੁਦਹ ॥੧੨॥
zimeen aasamaa pur aan zikarash shudah |12|
The sky was inundated with vultures.(12)
ਚਕਾ ਚਾਕ ਬਰਖ਼ਾਸਤ ਨੋਕੇ ਸਿਨਾ ॥
chakaa chaak barakhaasat noke sinaa |
Noises coming through the tips of the spears were piercing,
ਯਕੇ ਰੁਸਤ ਖ਼ੇਜ਼ ਅਜ਼ ਬਰਾਮਦ ਜਹਾ ॥੧੩॥
yake rusat khez az baraamad jahaa |13|
And both were creating havoc in the world.(13)
ਚੁ ਸੂਰੇ ਸਰਾਫ਼ੀਲ ਦਮ ਮੇਜ਼ਦਹ ॥
chu soore saraafeel dam mezadah |
They were raising hue and cries, as if, to seek final bliss of Angel of Resurrection,
ਕਿ ਰੋਜ਼ੇ ਕਿਯਾਮਤ ਬਹਮ ਮੇਜ਼ਦਹ ॥੧੪॥
ki roze kiyaamat beham mezadah |14|
So that, on the doomsday, they attain sanctuary in the heaven.(14)
ਗ਼ੁਰੇਜ਼ਸ਼ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਬ ਅਰਬੀ ਸਿਪਾਹ ॥
gurezash daraamad b arabee sipaah |
At the end anarchy surrounded the Arabian Army,
ਬ ਗ਼ਾਲਬ ਦਰਾਮਦ ਹੁਮਾ ਗਰਬ ਸ਼ਾਹ ॥੧੫॥
b gaalab daraamad humaa garab shaah |15|
And western Raja had the victorious day.(15)
ਕਿ ਤਨਹਾ ਬਿਮਾਦ ਅਸਤ ਸ਼ਾਹੇ ਅਰਬ ॥
ki tanahaa bimaad asat shaahe arab |
The Arabian Prince was isolated,
ਬ ਵਕਤੇ ਚੁ ਪੇਸ਼ੀਨ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ ਚੂੰ ਗਰਬ ॥੧੬॥
b vakate chu pesheen shamash choon garab |16|
When the sun set in the evening.(16)
ਚੁ ਤਾਬਸ਼ ਨੁਮਨਦ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਦਸਤਗੀਰ ॥
chu taabash numanad shavad dasatageer |
As he had lost all his power, he tried to escape,
ਚੁ ਦੁਜ਼ਦੇ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਵਕਤ ਸ਼ਬ ਰਾ ਅਸੀਰ ॥੧੭॥
chu duzade shavad vakat shab raa aseer |17|
But could not, he surrendered and become a prisoner.(17)
ਬੁ ਬਸਤੰਦ ਬੁਰਦੰਦ ਸ਼ਹਿ ਨਿਜ਼ਦ ਸ਼ਾਹ ॥
bu basatand buradand sheh nizad shaah |
The Prince was tied down and taken to the Raja,
ਚੁ ਮਾਹ ਅਫ਼ਕਨੋ ਹਮ ਚੁ ਬੁਰਦੰਦ ਮਾਹ ॥੧੮॥
chu maah afakano ham chu buradand maah |18|
The same way as Rahu, the demon planet, captured the moon.(18)
ਬ ਖ਼ਾਨਹ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਆਮਦਹ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਬਸਤ ॥
b khaanah khabar aamadah shaeh basat |
Although the news of the Prince’s arrest reached his household,
ਹਮਹ ਕਾਰ ਦੁਜ਼ਦੀ ਵ ਮਰਦੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਸ਼ਤ ॥੧੯॥
hamah kaar duzadee v maradee guzashat |19|
In spite of hard efforts Prince could not be rescued.(19)
ਨਿਸ਼ਸਤੰਦ ਬ ਮਜਲਸ ਜ਼ਿ ਦਾਨਾਇ ਦਿਲ ॥
nishasatand b majalas zi daanaae dil |
The wise ones assembled in the Court,
ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਰਾਦ ਪਿਨਹਾ ਵਜ਼ਾ ਸ਼ਹਿ ਖ਼ਿਜ਼ਲ ॥੨੦॥
sukhan raad pinahaa vazaa sheh khizal |20|
And talked over the shame (of the Prince’s apprehension).(20)
ਚੁ ਬਿਸਨੀਦ ਈਂ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਦੁਖ਼ਤਰ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ॥
chu bisaneed een khabar dukhatar vazeer |
When the daughter of the Minister heard the news,
ਬ ਬਸਤੰਦ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਜੁਸਤੰਦ ਤੀਰ ॥੨੧॥
b basatand shamasher jusatand teer |21|
She girded up her lions and tucked the arrows in there.(21)
ਬ ਪੋਸ਼ੀਦ ਜ਼ਰ ਬਫ਼ਤ ਰੂਮੀ ਕਬਾਇ ॥
b posheed zar bafat roomee kabaae |
Adoring the dress of the country of Rome,
ਬਜ਼ੀਂ ਬਰ ਨਿਸ਼ਸਤੋ ਬਿਆਮਦ ਬਜਾਇ ॥੨੨॥
bazeen bar nishasato biaamad bajaae |22|
She mounted the horse.(22)
ਰਵਾ ਸ਼ੁਦ ਸੂਏ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਮਗ਼ਰਬ ਚੁ ਬਾਦ ॥
ravaa shud sooe shaeh magarab chu baad |
Galloping in the winds, she approached the Raja of the West,
ਕਮਾਨੇ ਕਿਯਾਨੀ ਬ ਤਰਕਸ਼ ਨਿਹਾਦ ॥੨੩॥
kamaane kiyaanee b tarakash nihaad |23|
With Kiani Clan’s quiver full of arrows at her back.(23)
ਬਪੇਸ਼ੇ ਸ਼ਹੇ ਮਗ਼ਰਬ ਆਮਦ ਦਲੇਰ ॥
bapeshe shahe magarab aamad daler |
She faced the Raja with great courage,
ਚੁ ਗ਼ੁਰਰੀਦਹ ਬਬਰੋ ਚੁ ਦਰਰਿੰਦਹ ਸ਼ੇਰ ॥੨੪॥
chu gurareedah babaro chu dararindah sher |24|
But she, who used to roar like the thundering clouds and carnivorous lions,(24)
ਦੁਆ ਕਰਦ ਕਿ ਏ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਬਖ਼ਤ ॥
duaa karad ki e shaeh aazaad bakhat |
Bowed in greeting and said, ‘Oh! You the fortunate Raja,
ਸਜ਼ਾਵਾਰ ਦੇਹੀਮੁ ਸਾਯਾਨ ਤਖ਼ਤ ॥੨੫॥
sazaavaar deheem saayaan takhat |25|
‘Worthy of Royal Throne and the Royal Canopy.(25)
ਮਰਾ ਕਾਹੀਯਾ ਆਮਦ ਅਜ਼ ਬਹਰ ਕਾਹ ॥
maraa kaaheeyaa aamad az behar kaah |
‘My grass-cutters had come to shear the grass,
ਦੋ ਸੇ ਸਦ ਸਵਾਰੋ ਯਕ ਅਜ਼ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ॥੨੬॥
do se sad savaaro yak az shakal shaeh |26|
‘They were riding hundreds of horses and one of them looked like the Prince.(26)
ਕਿ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਹੁਮਾਨਸਤ ਆਂ ਰਾ ਬਿਦਿਹ ॥
ki bihatar humaanasat aan raa bidih |
‘You better send them back,
ਵਗਰਨਹ ਖ਼ੁਦਸ਼ ਮੌਤ ਬਰ ਸਰ ਬਿਨਿਹ ॥੨੭॥
vagaranah khudash mauat bar sar binih |27|
“Otherwise, there will be a call for your death.(27)
ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦੇ ਜ਼ਿ ਮਨ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਗਰ ਈਂ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ॥
shuneede zi man shaeh gar een sukhan |
“If my King heard this from me,
ਹੁਮਾਨਾ ਤੁਰਾ ਬੇਖ਼ ਬਰਕੰਦ ਬੁਨ ॥੨੮॥
humaanaa turaa bekh barakand bun |28|
“He would come to uproot you.”(28)
ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦ ਈਂ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਫ਼ੌਲਾਦ ਤਨ ॥
shuneed een sukhan shaeh faualaad tan |
The Raja of iron will heard this,
ਬ ਲਰਜ਼ੀਦ ਬਰ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਚੁ ਬਰਗ਼ੇ ਸਮਨ ॥੨੯॥
b larazeed bar khud chu barage saman |29|
And started to tremble like the leaves of jasmine shrubs.(29)
ਚੁਨਾ ਜੰਗ ਕਰਦੰਦ ਈਂ ਕਾਹੀਯਾ ॥
chunaa jang karadand een kaaheeyaa |
The Raja thought, ‘If these grass-cutters had given such a tough fight,
ਨ ਦਾਨਮ ਮਗ਼ਰ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਬਾਸ਼ਦ ਜਵਾ ॥੩੦॥
n daanam magar shaeh baashad javaa |30|
‘Then their King must a very brave man.(30)
ਨ ਦਾਨਮ ਕਸੇ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਹਸਤਸ਼ ਜਵਾ ॥
n daanam kase shaeh hasatash javaa |
‘I did not perceive that their King was so brave,
ਕਿ ਮਾਰਾ ਬਿਗੀਰਦ ਜਿ ਮਾਯੰਦਰਾ ॥੩੧॥
ki maaraa bigeerad ji maayandaraa |31|
‘That he would drag me, even, out of hell.’(31)
ਜ਼ਿ ਪੇਸ਼ੀਨਹੇ ਸ਼ਹ ਵਜ਼ੀਰਾ ਬੁਖਾਦ ॥
zi pesheenahe sheh vazeeraa bukhaad |
The Raja called his Counsellors,
ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਹਾਇ ਪੋਸ਼ੀਦਹ ਬਾ ਓ ਬਿਰਾਦ ॥੩੨॥
sukhan haae posheedah baa o biraad |32|
And had a secret conversation with them,(32)
ਤੁ ਦੀਦੀ ਚੁਨਾ ਕਾਹੀਯਾ ਜੰਗ ਕਰਦ ॥
tu deedee chunaa kaaheeyaa jang karad |
‘Oh! My Counsellors, you have seen the grass-cutters fighting so vigorously,
ਕਿ ਅਜ਼ ਮੁਲਕ ਯਜ਼ਦਾ ਬਰਾਵੁਰਦ ਗਰਦ ॥੩੩॥
ki az mulak yazadaa baraavurad garad |33|
‘And the havoc they had brought to this God’s country.(33)
ਮੁਬਾਦਾ ਕੁਨਦ ਤਾਖ਼ਤ ਬਰ ਮੁਲਕ ਸਖ਼ਤ ॥
mubaadaa kunad taakhat bar mulak sakhat |
‘God forbid, if that King raided, then this country would be ruined.
ਦਿਹਮ ਕਾਹੀਯਾ ਰਾ ਅਜ਼ਾ ਨੇਕ ਬਖ਼ਤ ॥੩੪॥
diham kaaheeyaa raa azaa nek bakhat |34|
‘I should return the grass-cutters to this lucky one.’(34)
ਹੁਮਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਮਹਿਬੂਸ਼ੀਯਾ ਪੇਸ਼ ਖਾਦ ॥
humaa shaeh mahiboosheeyaa pesh khaad |
The Raja immediately called the tied-up grass-cutter (the Prince),
ਹਵਾਲਹ ਨਮੂਦਸ਼ ਕਿ ਓ ਰਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਦ ॥੩੫॥
havaalah namoodash ki o raa nishaad |35|
Invited him besides him and, then, handed him over (to the woman).(35)
ਤੁ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਗਸ਼ਤੀ ਅਜ਼ੀ ਸਹਿਲ ਚੀਜ਼ ॥
tu aazaad gashatee azee sahil cheez |
(She said to the Prince), ‘You have easily attained the freedom,
ਬਿਗੀਰਏ ਬਿਰਾਦਰ ਤੁ ਅਜ਼ ਜ਼ਾ ਅਜ਼ੀਜ਼ ॥੩੬॥
bigeere biraadar tu az zaa azeez |36|
‘Now you apprehend them (Raja and his Councillors). I love you more than my life’.(36)
ਜ਼ਨੇ ਪੇਚ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਰਾ ਤਾਬਦਾਦ ॥
zane pech dasataar raa taabadaad |
She held the folds of her turban with one hand,
ਦਿਗ਼ਰ ਦਸਤ ਬਰ ਮੁਸ਼ਤ ਤੇਗਸ਼ ਨਿਹਾਦ ॥੩੭॥
digar dasat bar mushat tegash nihaad |37|
And put the other hand on the scabbard of her sword,(37)
ਬਿਜ਼ਦ ਤਾਜ਼ੀਯਾਨਹ ਬ ਹਰ ਚਾਰ ਚਾਰ ॥
bizad taazeeyaanah b har chaar chaar |
She gave four lashes to each one of them (the grass-cutters),
ਬਗੁਫ਼ਤਾ ਕਿ ਏ ਬੇ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਬੇ ਮੁਹਾਰ ॥੩੮॥
bagafataa ki e be khabar be muhaar |38|
And said, ‘You, the ignorant, you don’t know anything.(38)
ਕਿ ਆਮਦ ਦਰੀਂ ਜਾ ਵਜ਼ਾ ਕਾਹ ਨੇਸਤ ॥
ki aamad dareen jaa vazaa kaah nesat |
‘You have come here where there is no grass to cut.
ਕਿ ਏਜ਼ਦ ਗਵਾਹ ਅਸਤ ਯਜ਼ਦਾ ਯਕੇਸਤ ॥੩੯॥
ki ezad gavaah asat yazadaa yakesat |39|
‘The God only is my witness,’(39)
ਦਰੋਗੇ ਮਰਾ ਬਰ ਗ਼ਫ਼ੂਰੇ ਗੁਆਹਸਤ ॥
daroge maraa bar gafoore guaahasat |
‘God is my Protector,
ਬਿਗੋਯਦ ਕਿ ਮਾਰਾ ਪਨਾਹੇ ਖ਼ੁਦਾਸਤ ॥੪੦॥
bigoyad ki maaraa panaahe khudaasat |40|
‘He is Forgiver and, I am sure, He will excuse my lie.‘(40)
ਰਿਹਾਈ ਦਿਹੰਦਹ ਖ਼ੁਦਾਵੰਦ ਤਖ਼ਤ ॥
rihaaee dihandah khudaavand takhat |
After gaining freedom for his sovereign,
ਵਿਦਾ ਗਸ਼ਤ ਜ਼ੋ ਮੰਜ਼ਲੋ ਜਾਇ ਸਖ਼ਤ ॥੪੧॥
vidaa gashat zo manzalo jaae sakhat |41|
She left that place for her own abode.(41)
ਬਿਦਿਹ ਸਾਕੀਯਾ ਸਾਗਰੇ ਸਬਜ਼ ਪਾਨ ॥
bidih saakeeyaa saagare sabaz paan |
(The poet says), ‘Oh! Saki, give me green wine to drink,
ਕਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸ਼ਊਰ ਅਸਤ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਜਹਾਨ ॥੪੨॥
ki saahib shaoor asat zaahar jahaan |42|
Because the Master of the Intellect prevails all over.(42)
ਬਿਦਿਹ ਸਾਕੀਯਾ ਜਾਮ ਫ਼ੀਰੋਜ਼ ਰੰਗ ॥
bidih saakeeyaa jaam feeroz rang |
‘Saki! Give me the cup full of greenish (liquid),
ਕਿ ਦਰ ਵਕਤ ਸ਼ਬ ਚੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੇ ਰੋਜ਼ ਜੰਗ ॥੪੩॥੬॥
ki dar vakat shab choon khushe roz jang |43|6|
“Which soothes during the wars and the lonely nights.”(42)
ਭੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮਾਣਿਅਉ ਲਾਖ ਮਹਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਯਉ ॥
bhai nirbhau maaniaau laakh meh alakh lakhaayau |
In the Fear of God, You enjoy the Fearless Lord; among the thousands of beings, You see the Unseen Lord.
ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਗਤਿ ਗਭੀਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਪਰਚਾਯਉ ॥
agam agochar gat gabheer satigur parachaayau |
Through the True Guru, You have realized the state of the Inaccessible, Unfathomable, Profound Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਕਮਾਯਉ ॥
gur parachai paravaan raaj meh jog kamaayau |
Meeting with the Guru, You are certified and approved; You practice Yoga in the midst of wealth and power.
ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਧੰਨਿ ਅਭਰ ਸਰ ਸੁਭਰ ਭਰਾਯਉ ॥
dhan dhan gur dhan abhar sar subhar bharaayau |
Blessed, blessed, blessed is the Guru, who has filled to overflowing the pools which were empty.
ਗੁਰ ਗਮ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਿ ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰਿਓ ਸਰਿ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਮਾਇਯਉ ॥
gur gam pramaan ajar jario sar santokh samaaeiyau |
Reaching up to the certified Guru, You endure the unendurable; You are immersed in the pool of contentment.
ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਕਲੵੁਚਰੈ ਤੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਾਇਯਉ ॥੮॥
gur arajun kalayucharai tai sehaj jog nij paaeiyau |8|
So speaks KALL: O Guru Arjun, You have intuitively attained the state of Yoga within Yourself. ||8||
ਅਮਿਉ ਰਸਨਾ ਬਦਨਿ ਬਰ ਦਾਤਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਸੂਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਾਰੵਉ ॥
amiau rasanaa badan bar daat alakh apaar gur soor sabad haumai nivaaryau |
Nectar drips from Your tongue, and Your mouth gives Blessings, O Incomprehensible and Infinite Spiritual Hero. O Guru, the Word of Your Shabad eradicates egotism.
ਪੰਚਾ ਹਰੁਨਿ ਦਲਿਅਉ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਸਹਾਰੵਉ ॥
panchaa harun daliaau sun sehaj nij ghar sahaaryau |
You have overpowered the five enticers, and established with intuitive ease the Absolute Lord within Your own being.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਜਗ ਉਧਰੵਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸਾਇਅਉ ॥
har naam laag jag udharyau satigur ridai basaaeaau |
Attached to the Lord's Name, the world is saved; enshrine the True Guru within your heart.
ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਕਲੵੁਚਰੈ ਤੈ ਜਨਕਹ ਕਲਸੁ ਦੀਪਾਇਅਉ ॥੯॥

: Guru Arjun is the certified Primal Person; like Arjuna, He never leaves the field of battle.
ਨੇਜਾ ਨਾਮ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਅਉ ॥੧॥
nejaa naam neesaan satigur sabad savaariaau |1|
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is His spear and insignia. He is embellished with the Shabad, the Word of the True Guru. ||1||
ਭਵਜਲੁ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਸੇਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੀ ਕਾ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ॥

The Lord's Name is the Boat, the Bridge to cross over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਤੁਅ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰ ਹੇਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਜਗੁ ਉਧਰੵਉ ॥੨॥
tua satigur san het naam laag jag udharyau |2|
You are in love with the True Guru; attached to the Naam, You have saved the world. ||2||
ਜਗਤ ਉਧਾਰਣੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਇਅਉ ॥
jagat udhaaran naam satigur tutthai paaeaau |
The Naam is the Saving Grace of the world; by the Pleasure of the True Guru, it is obtained.
ਅਬ ਨਾਹਿ ਅਵਰ ਸਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਬਾਰੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਪੜੀ ॥੩॥੧੨॥
ab naeh avar sar kaam baarantar pooree parree |3|12|
Now, I am not concerned with anything else; at Your Door, I am fulfilled. ||3||12||
ਜੋਤਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹਾਯਉ ॥
jot roop har aap guroo naanak kahaayau |
The Embodiment of Light, the Lord Himself is called Guru Nanak.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਗਦੁ ਭਯਉ ਤਤ ਸਿਉ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਯਉ ॥
taa te angad bhyau tat siau tat milaayau |
From Him, came Guru Angad; His essence was absorbed into the essence.
ਅੰਗਦਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੀਅਉ ॥
angad kirapaa dhaar amar satigur thir keeo |
Guru Angad showed His Mercy, and established Amar Daas as the True Guru.
ਅਮਰਦਾਸਿ ਅਮਰਤੁ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਹਿ ਦੀਅਉ ॥
amaradaas amarat chhatru gur raameh deeo |
Guru Amar Daas blessed Guru Raam Daas with the umbrella of immortality.
ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਕਹਿ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਯਣ ॥
gur raamadaas darasan paras keh mathuraa amrit bayan |
So speaks Mat'huraa: gazing upon the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of Guru Raam Daas, His speech became as sweet as nectar.
ਮੂਰਤਿ ਪੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਪਿਖਹੁ ਨਯਣ ॥੧॥

ਸਤਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਧਰਿਓ ਉਰਿ ॥
sat roop sat naam sat santokh dhario ur |
He is the Embodiment of Truth; He has enshrined the True Name, Sat Naam, Truth and contentment within His heart.
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਪਰਤਖਿ ਲਿਖੵਉ ਅਛਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ॥
aad purakh paratakh likhyau achhar masatak dhur |
From the very beginning, the Primal Being has written this destiny upon His forehead.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਮਗੈ ਤੇਜੁ ਭੂਅ ਮੰਡਲਿ ਛਾਯਉ ॥
pragatt jot jagamagai tej bhooa manddal chhaayau |
His Divine Light shines forth, dazzling and radiant; His Glorious Grandeur pervades the realms of the world.
ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਪਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਹਾਯਉ ॥

Meeting the Guru, touching the Philosopher's Stone, He was acclaimed as Guru.
ਭਨਿ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤੁ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਹੁ ॥
bhan mathuraa moorat sadaa thir laae chit sanamukh rahahu |
So speaks Mat'huraa: I constantly focus my consciousness on Him; as sunmukh, I look to Him.
ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਜਹਾਜੁ ਅਰਜੁਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਟਿ ਲਗਿ ਬਿਤਰਹੁ ॥੨॥
kalajug jahaaj arajun guroo sagal srisatt lag bitarahu |2|
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, Guru Arjun is the Boat; attached to him, the entire universe is safely carried across. ||2||
ਤਿਹ ਜਨ ਜਾਚਹੁ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਪਰ ਜਾਨੀਅਤੁ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਰਯਨਿ ਬਾਸੁ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਹਿਤੁ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥
tih jan jaachahu jagatr par jaaneeat baasur rayan baas jaa ko hit naam siau |
I beg from that humble being who is known all over the world, who lives in, and loves the Name, night and day.
ਪਰਮ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗੵੌ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੈ ਦੇਖੀਅਤੁ ਧਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥
param ateet paramesur kai rang rangayau baasanaa te baahar pai dekheeat dhaam siau |
He is supremely unattached, and imbued with the Love of the Transcendent Lord; he is free of desire, but he lives as a family man.
ਅਪਰ ਪਰੰਪਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਲਾਗੵੌ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਉਰੈ ਕਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥
apar paranpar purakh siau prem laagayau bin bhagavant ras naahee aaurai kaam siau |
He is dedicated to the Love of the Infinite, Limitless Primal Lord God; he has no concerns for any other pleasure, except for the Lord God.
ਮਥੁਰਾ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਮਯ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਉ ॥੩॥
mathuraa ko prabh srab may arajun gur bhagat kai het paae rahio mil raam siau |3|
Guru Arjun is the All-pervading Lord God of Mat'huraa. Devoted to His Worship, he remains attached to the Lord's Feet. ||3||
