ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਬਉਰੀ ਮਨੁ ਬਉਰਾਇਆ ॥
dubidhaa bauree man bauraaeaa |
The insanity of duality has driven the mind insane.
ਝੂਠੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
jhootthai laalach janam gavaaeaa |
In false greed, life is wasting away.
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹੀ ਫੁਨਿ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
lapatt rahee fun bandh na paaeaa |
Duality clings to the mind; it cannot be restrained.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
satigur raakhe naam drirraaeaa |1|
The True Guru saves us, implanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord within. ||1||
ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਰੈ ॥
naa man marai na maaeaa marai |
Without subduing the mind, Maya cannot be subdued.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਭਉ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jin kichh keea soee jaanai sabad veechaar bhau saagar tarai |1| rahaau |
The One who created this, He alone understands. Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, one is carried across the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||Pause||
ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਚਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
maaeaa sanch raaje ahankaaree |
Gathering the wealth of Maya, kings become proud and arrogant.
ਮਾਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
maaeaa saath na chalai piaaree |
But this Maya that they love so much shall not go along with them in the end.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ॥
maaeaa mamataa hai bahu rangee |
There are so many colors and flavors of attachment to Maya.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਸੰਗੀ ॥੨॥
bin naavai ko saath na sangee |2|
Except for the Name, no one has any friend or companion. ||2||
ਜਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਪਰ ਮਨੁ ਤੈਸਾ ॥
jiau man dekheh par man taisaa |
According to one's own mind, one sees the minds of others.
ਜੈਸੀ ਮਨਸਾ ਤੈਸੀ ਦਸਾ ॥
jaisee manasaa taisee dasaa |
According to one's desires, one's condition is determined.
ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰਮੁ ਤੈਸੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
jaisaa karam taisee liv laavai |
According to one's actions, one is focused and tuned in.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਛਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
satigur poochh sehaj ghar paavai |3|
Seeking the advice of the True Guru, one finds the home of peace and poise. ||3||
ਰਾਗਿ ਨਾਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
raag naad man doojai bhaae |
In music and song, the mind is caught by the love of duality.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
antar kapatt mahaa dukh paae |
Filled with deception deep within, one suffers in terrible pain.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
satigur bhettai sojhee paae |
Meeting with the True Guru, one is blessed with clear understanding,
ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੪॥
sachai naam rahai liv laae |4|
and remains lovingly attuned to the True Name. ||4||
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
sachai sabad sach kamaavai |
Through the True Word of the Shabad, one practices Truth.
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
sachee baanee har gun gaavai |
He sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, through the True Word of His Bani.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਅਮਰ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
nij ghar vaas amar pad paavai |
He dwells in the home of his own heart deep within, and obtains the immortal status.
ਤਾ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
taa dar saachai sobhaa paavai |5|
Then, he is blessed with honor in the Court of the True Lord. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur sevaa bin bhagat na hoee |
Without serving the Guru, there is no devotional worship,
ਅਨੇਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ॥
anek jatan karai je koee |
even though one may make all sorts of efforts.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਖੋਈ ॥
haumai meraa sabade khoee |
If one eradicates egotism and selfishness through the Shabad,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੬॥
niramal naam vasai man soee |6|
the Immaculate Naam comes to abide in the mind. ||6||
ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
eis jag meh sabad karanee hai saar |
In this world, the practice of the Shabad is the most excellent occupation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥
bin sabadai hor mohu gubaar |
Without the Shabad, everything else is the darkness of emotional attachment.
ਸਬਦੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
sabade naam rakhai ur dhaar |
Through the Shabad, the Naam is enshrined within the heart.
ਸਬਦੇ ਗਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੭॥
sabade gat mat mokh duaar |7|
Through the Shabad, one obtains clear understanding and the door of salvation. ||7||
ਅਵਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੋ ॥
avar naahee kar dekhanahaaro |
There is no other Creator except the All-seeing Lord God.
ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਅਪਾਰੋ ॥
saachaa aap anoop apaaro |
The True Lord Himself is Infinite and Incomparably Beautiful.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਊਤਮ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
raam naam aootam gat hoee |
Through the Lord's Name, one obtains the most sublime and exalted state.
ਨਾਨਕ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak khoj lahai jan koee |8|1|
O Nanak, how rare are those humble beings, who seek and find the Lord. ||8||1||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
maaeaa mohi sagal jag chhaaeaa |
Emotional attachment to Maya is spread out all over the world.
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥
kaaman dekh kaam lobhaaeaa |
Seeing a beautiful woman, the man is overcome with sexual desire.
ਸੁਤ ਕੰਚਨ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
sut kanchan siau het vadhaaeaa |
His love for his children and gold steadily increases.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਇਕੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
sabh kichh apanaa ik raam paraaeaa |1|
He sees everything as his own, but he does not own the One Lord. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ॥
aisaa jaap jpau japamaalee |
I meditate as I chant on such a mala,
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dukh sukh parahar bhagat niraalee |1| rahaau |
that I rise above pleasure and pain; I attain the most wondrous devotional worship of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gun nidhaan teraa ant na paaeaa |
O Treasure of Virtue, Your limits cannot be found.
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
saach sabad tujh maeh samaaeaa |
Through the True Word of the Shabad, I am absorbed into You.
ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
aavaa gaun tudh aap rachaaeaa |
You Yourself created the comings and goings of reincarnation.
ਸੇਈ ਭਗਤ ਜਿਨ ਸਚਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
seee bhagat jin sach chit laaeaa |2|
They alone are devotees, who focus their consciousness on You. ||2||
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥
giaan dhiaan narahar nirabaanee |
Spiritual wisdom and meditation on the Lord, the Lord of Nirvaanaa
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
bin satigur bhette koe na jaanee |
- without meeting the True Guru, no one knows this.
ਸਗਲ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
sagal sarovar jot samaanee |
The Lord's Light fills the sacred pools of all beings.
ਆਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
aanad roop vittahu kurabaanee |3|
I am a sacrifice to the Embodiment of Bliss. ||3||
ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
bhaau bhagat guramatee paae |
Through the Guru's Teachings, one achieves loving devotional worship.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
haumai vichahu sabad jalaae |
The Shabad burns away egotism from within.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
dhaavat raakhai tthaak rahaae |
The wandering mind is restrained and held in its place.
ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੪॥
sachaa naam man vasaae |4|
The True Name is enshrined in the mind. ||4||
ਬਿਸਮ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਦੀ ॥
bisam binod rahe paramaadee |
The exciting and intoxicating worldly plays come to an end,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
guramat maaniaa ek liv laagee |
for those who accept the Guru's Teachings, and become lovingly attuned to the One Lord.
ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਗੀ ॥
dekh nivaariaa jal meh aagee |
Seeing this, the fire in the water is extinguished.
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੫॥
so boojhai hovai vaddabhaagee |5|
They alone realize this, who are blessed by great good fortune. ||5||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
satigur seve bharam chukaae |
Serving the True Guru, doubt is dispelled.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
anadin jaagai sach liv laae |
Those who are lovingly attuned to the True Lord remain awake and aware night and day.
ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
eko jaanai avar na koe |
They know the One Lord, and no other.
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
sukhadaataa seve niramal hoe |6|
Serving the Giver of peace, they become immaculate. ||6||
ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
sevaa surat sabad veechaar |
Selfless service and intuitive awareness come by reflecting upon the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
jap tap sanjam haumai maar |
Chanting, intensive meditation and austere self-discipline come by subduing the ego.
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
jeevan mukat jaa sabad sunaae |
One becomes Jivan-mukta - liberated while yet alive, by listening to the Shabad.
ਸਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
sachee rehat sachaa sukh paae |7|
Living a truthful way of life, one finds true peace. ||7||
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
sukhadaataa dukh mettanahaaraa |
The Giver of peace is the Eradicator of pain.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੀਜੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
avar na soojhas beejee kaaraa |
I cannot conceive of serving any other.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥
tan man dhan har aagai raakhiaa |
I place my body, mind and wealth in offering before Him.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak kahai mahaa ras chaakhiaa |8|2|
Says Nanak, I have tasted the supreme, sublime Essence of the Lord. ||8||2||

ਦੇਹ ਕੁਰੂਪ ਨਾਥ ਜਿਹ ਸਾਜੀ ॥
deh kuroop naath jih saajee |
ਧਾਮ ਖਾਤਿਮਾ ਬਾਨੋ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
dhaam khaatimaa baano naaree |
ਜਿਹ ਸਮਾਨ ਨਹਿ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਲਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

ਬਰੌ ਇਸੀ ਕਹ ਚਿਤ ਯੌ ਕਹਾ ॥੪॥

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਮ ਬੁਲਾਵਤ ॥
musalamaan bahu dhaam bulaavat |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਨ ਦਰਬ ਲੁਟਾਵਤ ॥
bhaat bhaat tan darab luttaavat |
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਸਭਹੂੰ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
yau keh sabhahoon sees jhukaavai |
ਯਹ ਕਾਜੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
yeh kaajee sundar hvai jaavai |5|
ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਉਪ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥
ek divas up patihi bulaaee |
ਕਾਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਸਭ ਬਾਤ ਸਿਖਾਈ ॥
kaan laag sabh baat sikhaaee |
ਬੀਚ ਛਪਾਇ ਸਦਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਖਾ ॥
beech chhapaae sadan ke raakhaa |
ਔਰ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੌ ਭੇਵ ਨ ਭਾਖਾ ॥੬॥
aauar naar sau bhev na bhaakhaa |6|
ਸਭ ਮਲੇਛ ਉਠਿ ਫਜਿਰ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥
sabh malechh utth fajir bulaae |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਜਿਵਾਏ ॥
bhaat bhaat ke saath jivaae |
ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸਭੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹੁ ਦੁਆਇ ॥
kahiyo sabhai mil dehu duaae |
ਮਮ ਪਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਕਰੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੭॥
mam pat sundar karai khudaae |7|
ਸਭਹੂੰ ਹਾਥ ਤਸਬਿਯੈ ਲੀਨੀ ॥
sabhahoon haath tasabiyai leenee |
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਦੁਆਇ ਤਵਨ ਕਹ ਦੀਨੀ ॥
bahu bidh duaae tavan keh deenee |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਨ ਕਰੀ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥
bhaat bhaat tan karee sunaae |
ਤਵ ਪਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕਰੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੮॥
tav pat sundar karai khudaae |8|
ਲੈ ਦੁਆਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਧਾਮ ਸਿਧਾਈ ॥
lai duaae triy dhaam sidhaaee |
ਮਾਰਿ ਕਾਜਿਯਹਿ ਦਿਯੋ ਦਬਾਈ ॥
maar kaajiyeh diyo dabaaee |
ਕਰਿ ਕਾਜੀ ਲੈਗੀ ਤਿਹ ਤਹਾ ॥
kar kaajee laigee tih tahaa |
ਪੜਤ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਮੁਲਾਨੇ ਜਹਾ ॥੯॥
parrat kitaab mulaane jahaa |9|
ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਤਾ ਕਹ ਹਰਖਾਨੀ ॥
prajaa nirakh taa keh harakhaanee |
ਸਾਚੁ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਆਪਨੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
saach kitaab aapanee jaanee |
ਹਮ ਜੋ ਯਾ ਕਹ ਦਈ ਦੁਆਇ ॥
ham jo yaa keh dee duaae |
ਯਾ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕਰਾ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
yaa te sundar karaa khudaae |10|
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਕਾਜਿਯਹਿ ਘਾਈ ॥
eih bidh pratham kaajiyeh ghaaee |
ਬਰਤ ਭਈ ਅਪਨਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
barat bhee apanaa sukhadaaee |
ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਨ ਕਿਨੂੰ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥
bhed abhed na kinoo bichaaraa |
ਇਹ ਛਲ ਬਰਾ ਅਪਨਾ ਪ︀ਯਾਰਾ ॥੧੧॥
