Prabhaatee, First Mehl:
ਬਾਰਹ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਵਲ ਖਪਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਚਹੁ ਛਿਅ ਮਹਿ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ॥
baarah meh raaval khap jaaveh chahu chhia meh saniaasee |
The Yogis are divided into twelve schools, the Sannyaasees into ten.
ਜੋਗੀ ਕਾਪੜੀਆ ਸਿਰਖੂਥੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਸੀ ॥੧॥
jogee kaaparreea sirakhoothe bin sabadai gal faasee |1|
The Yogis and those wearing religious robes, and the Jains with their all hair plucked out - without the Word of the Shabad, the noose is around their necks. ||1||
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
sabad rate poore bairaagee |
Those who are imbued with the Shabad are the perfectly detached renunciates.
ਅਉਹਠਿ ਹਸਤ ਮਹਿ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਜਾਚੀ ਏਕ ਭਾਇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aauhatth hasat meh bheekhiaa jaachee ek bhaae liv laagee |1| rahaau |
They beg to receive charity in the hands of their hearts, embracing love and affection for the One. ||1||Pause||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਵਾਦੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
brahaman vaad parreh kar kiriaa karanee karam karaae |
The Brahmins study and argue about the scriptures; they perform ceremonial rituals, and lead others in these rituals.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੨॥
bin boojhe kichh soojhai naahee manamukh vichhurr dukh paae |2|
Without true understanding, those self-willed manmukhs understand nothing. Separated from God, they suffer in pain. ||2||
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਸੂਚਾਚਾਰੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੇ ॥
sabad mile se soochaachaaree saachee daragah maane |
Those who receive the Shabad are sanctified and pure; they are approved in the True Court.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੇ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਨੇ ॥੩॥
anadin naam ratan liv laage jug jug saach samaane |3|
Night and day, they remain lovingly attuned to the Naam; throughout the ages, they are merged in the True One. ||3||
ਸਗਲੇ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਸੇ ॥
sagale karam dharam such sanjam jap tap teerath sabad vase |
Good deeds, righteousness and Dharmic faith, purification, austere self-discipline, chanting, intense meditation and pilgrimages to sacred shrines - all these abide in the Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਦੂਖ ਪਰਾਛਤ ਕਾਲ ਨਸੇ ॥੪॥੧੬॥
naanak satigur milai milaaeaa dookh paraachhat kaal nase |4|16|
O Nanak, united in union with the True Guru, suffering, sin and death run away. ||4||16||

ਸੰਤਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
santaa kee ren saadh jan sangat har keerat tar taaree |
The dust of the feet of the Saints, the Company of the Holy, and the Praises of the Lord carry us across to the other side.
ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਜਮੁ ਡਰਪੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
kahaa karai bapuraa jam ddarapai guramukh ridai muraaree |1|
What can the wretched, terrified Messenger of Death do to the Gurmukhs? The Lord abides in their hearts. ||1||
ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ॥
jal jaau jeevan naam binaa |
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, life might just as well be burnt down.
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har jap jaap jpau japamaalee guramukh aavai saad manaa |1| rahaau |
The Gurmukh chants and meditates on the Lord, chanting the chant on the mala; the Flavor of the Lord comes into the mind. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਉਪਮਾ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
gur upades saach sukh jaa kau kiaa tis upamaa kaheeai |
Those who follow the Guru's Teachings find true peace - how can I even describe the glory of such a person?
ਲਾਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਖੋਜਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੀਐ ॥੨॥
laal javehar ratan padaarath khojat guramukh laheeai |2|
The Gurmukh seeks and finds the gems and jewels, diamonds, rubies and treasures. ||2||
ਚੀਨੈ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਚੌ ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
cheenai giaan dhiaan dhan saachau ek sabad liv laavai |
So center yourself on the treasures of spiritual wisdom and meditation; remain lovingly attuned to the One True Lord, and the Word of His Shabad.
ਨਿਰਾਲੰਬੁ ਨਿਰਹਾਰੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
niraalanb nirahaar nihakeval nirbhau taarree laavai |3|
Remain absorbed in the Primal State of the Fearless, Immaculate, Independent, Self-sufficient Lord. ||3||
ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਉਲਟੀ ਨਾਵ ਤਰਾਵੈ ॥
saaeir sapat bhare jal niramal ulattee naav taraavai |
The seven seas are overflowing with the Immaculate Water; the inverted boat floats across.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤੌ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
baahar jaatau tthaak rahaavai guramukh sehaj samaavai |4|
The mind which wandered in external distractions is restrained and held in check; the Gurmukh is intuitively absorbed in God. ||4||
ਸੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥
so girahee so daas udaasee jin guramukh aap pachhaaniaa |
He is a householder, he is a renunciate and God's slave, who, as Gurmukh, realizes his own self.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੫॥੧੭॥
naanak kahai avar nahee doojaa saach sabad man maaniaa |5|17|
Says Nanak, his mind is pleased and appeased by the True Word of the Shabad; there is no other at all. ||5||17||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
guramukh viralaa koee boojhai sabade rahiaa samaaee |
Those who become Gurmukh and understand are very rare; God is permeating and pervading through the Word of His Shabad.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੧॥
naam rate sadaa sukh paavai saach rahai liv laaee |1|
Those who are imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, find everlasting peace; they remain lovingly attuned to the True One. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
har har naam japahu jan bhaaee |
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਅਘਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur prasaad man asathir hovai anadin har ras rahiaa aghaaee |1| rahaau |
By Guru's Grace, the mind becomes steady and stable; night and day, it remains satisfied with the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਭਾਈ ॥
anadin bhagat karahu din raatee is jug kaa laahaa bhaaee |
Night and day, perform devotional worship service to the Lord, day and night; this is the profit to be obtained in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਸਦਾ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈ ॥੨॥
sadaa jan niramal mail na laagai sach naam chit laaee |2|
The humble beings are forever immaculate; no filth ever sticks to them. They focus their consciousness on the True Name. ||2||
ਸੁਖੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
sukh seegaar satiguroo dikhaaeaa naam vaddee vaddiaaee |
The True Guru has revealed the ornamentation of peace; the Glorious Greatness of the Naam is Great!
ਅਖੁਟ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਭਰੇ ਕਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥੩॥
akhutt bhanddaar bhare kade tott na aavai sadaa har sevahu bhaaee |3|
The Inexhaustible Treasures are overflowing; they are never exhausted. So serve the Lord forever, O Siblings of Destiny. ||3||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥
aape karataa jis no devai tis vasai man aaee |
The Creator comes to abide in the minds of those whom He Himself has blessed.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਸਦਾ ਤੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak naam dhiaae sadaa too satigur deea dikhaaee |4|1|
O Nanak, meditate forever on the Naam, which the True Guru has revealed. ||4||1||

ਤਬ ਲਗਿ ਆਇ ਗਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਪਤਿ ॥
tab lag aae gayo taa kau pat |
ਡਾਰਿ ਦਯੋ ਸੇਜਾ ਤਰ ਉਪ ਪਤਿ ॥
ddaar dayo sejaa tar up pat |
ਦੁਪਟਾ ਡਾਰਿ ਦਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਮੁਖ ਪਰ ॥
dupattaa ddaar dayo tih mukh par |
ਜਾਨ︀ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਨਰ ॥੫॥
jaanayo jaae na taa te triy nar |5|
ਸੋਵਤ ਕਵਨ ਸੇਜ ਪਰ ਤੋਰੀ ॥

ਭਾਖੀ ਨਾਥ ਮਾਤ ਹੈ ਮੋਰੀ ॥
bhaakhee naath maat hai moree |
ਹਮ ਪਹਿ ਤੋ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਤ ਜਗਾਈ ॥
ham peh to neh jaat jagaaee |
ਤੁਮੈ ਕਹਤ ਹੌ ਬਾਧਿ ਢਿਠਾਈ ॥੬॥
tumai kehat hau baadh dtitthaaee |6|
ਦ੍ਵੈਕ ਘਰੀ ਤੁਮ ਅਨਤ ਸਿਧਾਵਹੁ ॥
dvaik gharee tum anat sidhaavahu |
ਇਹ ਉਠਿ ਗਏ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਹ︀ਯਾਂ ਆਵਹੁ ॥
eih utth ge bahur hayaan aavahu |
ਜਬ ਜਾਗੈ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਸੈਹੈ ॥
jab jaagai te adhik risaihai |
ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਲਖਿ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਚੁਪ ਹ੍ਵੈਹੈ ॥੭॥
ham tum lakh ikatr chup hvaihai |7|
ਤਿਨਿ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਸਤ︀ਯ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥
tin ih baat satay kar maanee |
ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ਉਠਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
jaat bhayo utth kriyaa na jaanee |
ਜਬ ਉਠਿ ਮਾਤ ਗਈ ਲਖਿ ਲੈਯਹੁ ॥
jab utth maat gee lakh laiyahu |
ਤਬ ਹਮ ਕੌ ਤੁਮ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬੁਲੈਯਹੁ ॥੮॥
tab ham kau tum bahur bulaiyahu |8|
ਇਮਿ ਕਹਿ ਬਾਤ ਜਾਤ ਜੜ ਭਯੋ ॥
eim keh baat jaat jarr bhayo |
ਤਾਹਿ ਚੜਾਇ ਖਾਟ ਪਰ ਲਯੋ ॥
taeh charraae khaatt par layo |
ਭਾਤਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ॥
bhaat anik tan karai bilaasaa |
ਆਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਪਿਤਾ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥੯॥
aavat bhayo tih pitaa nivaasaa |9|
ਤਿਸੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁਵਾਯੋ ॥
tisee bhaat tan taeh suvaayo |
ਤਾਤ ਭਏ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥
taat bhe ih bhaat jataayo |
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਇਹ ਨਾਰਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
sunahu pitaa ih naar tihaaree |
ਤੁਮ ਸੇ ਛਪੀ ਲਾਜ ਕੀ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੧੦॥
tum se chhapee laaj kee maaree |10|
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਧਾਮ ਸਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
sunat bachan nrip dhaam sidhaanaa |
ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
bhed abhed kachhoo na pachhaanaa |
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਕਾਢਿ ਸੇਜ ਪਰ ਲੀਨਾ ॥
taa kau kaadt sej par leenaa |
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਤ ਗਵਨ ਤਹ ਕੀਨਾ ॥੧੧॥
taa kee maat gavan teh keenaa |11|
ਵੈਸਹਿ ਤਾ ਕਹ ਦਿਯਾ ਸੁਵਾਇ ॥
vaiseh taa keh diyaa suvaae |
ਕਹੀ ਮਾਤ ਸੈ ਬਾਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
kahee maat sai baat banaae |
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਮਾਤ ਜਾਮਾਤ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ॥
sunahu maat jaamaat tihaaro |
ਮੋ ਕੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤੇ ਪ︀ਯਾਰੋ ॥੧੨॥
mo ko adhik praan te payaaro |12|
ਯਾ ਕੋ ਨੈਨ ਨੀਦ ਦੁਖ ਦਿਯੋ ॥
yaa ko nain need dukh diyo |
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਸੈਨ ਸ੍ਰਮਿਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕਿਯੋ ॥
taa te sain sramit hvai kiyo |
ਮੈ ਯਾ ਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਸਕਤ ਜਗਾਈ ॥
mai yaa ko neh sakat jagaaee |
ਅਬ ਹੀ ਸੋਇ ਗਯੋ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥੧੩॥
ab hee soe gayo sukhadaaee |13|
ਸੁਨਿ ਬਚ ਮਾਤ ਜਾਤ ਭੀ ਉਠ ਘਰ ॥
sun bach maat jaat bhee utth ghar |
ਲਯੋ ਸੇਜ ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਪਿਯ ਭੁਜ ਭਰ ॥
layo sej par triy piy bhuj bhar |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਨ ਭੋਗ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
bhaat bhaat tan bhog kamaae |
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਧਾਮ ਕੌ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਏ ॥੧੪॥
