ਰਾਤੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
raatee kaal ghattai din kaal |
Through the night the time ticks away; through the day the time ticks away.
ਛਿਜੈ ਕਾਇਆ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਾਲੁ ॥
chhijai kaaeaa hoe paraal |
The body wears away and turns to straw.
ਵਰਤਣਿ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥
varatan varatiaa sarab janjaal |
All are involved and entangled in worldly entanglements.
ਭੁਲਿਆ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਤਪ ਤਾਲੁ ॥
bhuliaa chuk geaa tap taal |
The mortal has mistakenly renounced the way of service.
ਅੰਧਾ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਪਇਆ ਝੇਰਿ ॥
andhaa jhakh jhakh peaa jher |
The blind fool is caught in conflict, bothered and bewildered.
ਪਿਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਲਿਆਵਹਿ ਫੇਰਿ ॥
pichhai roveh liaaveh fer |
Those who weep after someone has died - can they bring him back to life?
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
bin boojhe kichh soojhai naahee |
Without realization, nothing can be understood.
ਮੋਇਆ ਰੋਂਹਿ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਂਹਂੀ ॥
moeaa ronhi ronde mar jaanhanee |
The weepers who weep for the dead shall themselves die as well.
ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
naanak khasamai evai bhaavai |
O Nanak, this is the Will of our Lord and Master.
ਸੇਈ ਮੁਏ ਜਿਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥
seee mue jin chit na aavai |1|
Those who do not remember the Lord, are dead. ||1||

ਮੁਆ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੁਈ ਮੁਆ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਾਦੀ ॥
muaa piaar preet muee muaa vair vaadee |
Love dies, and affection dies; hatred and strife die.
ਵੰਨੁ ਗਇਆ ਰੂਪੁ ਵਿਣਸਿਆ ਦੁਖੀ ਦੇਹ ਰੁਲੀ ॥
van geaa roop vinasiaa dukhee deh rulee |
The color fades, and beauty vanishes; the body suffers and collapses.
ਕਿਥਹੁ ਆਇਆ ਕਹ ਗਇਆ ਕਿਹੁ ਨ ਸੀਓ ਕਿਹੁ ਸੀ ॥
kithahu aaeaa keh geaa kihu na seeo kihu see |
Where did he come from? Where is he going? Did he exist or not?
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਗਲਾ ਗੋਈਆ ਕੀਤਾ ਚਾਉ ਰਲੀ ॥
man mukh galaa goeea keetaa chaau ralee |
The self-willed manmukh made empty boasts, indulging in parties and pleasures.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ॥੨॥
naanak sache naam bin sir khur pat paattee |2|
O Nanak, without the True Name, his honor is torn away, from head to foot. ||2||

Pauree:
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
amrit naam sadaa sukhadaataa ante hoe sakhaaee |
The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, is forever the Giver of peace. It shall be your Help and Support in the end.
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਗਤੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
baajh guroo jagat bauraanaa naavai saar na paaee |
Without the Guru, the world is insane. It does not appreciate the worth of the Name.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜਿਨੑ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥
satigur seveh se paravaan jina jotee jot milaaee |
Those who serve the True Guru are accepted and approved. Their light merges into the Light.
ਸੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
so saahib so sevak tehaa jis bhaanaa man vasaaee |
That servant who enshrines the Lord's Will within his mind, becomes just like his Lord and Master.
ਆਪਣੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
aapanai bhaanai kahu kin sukh paaeaa andhaa andh kamaaee |
Tell me, who has ever found peace by following his own will? The blind act in blindness.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕਦੇ ਹੀ ਰਜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
bikhiaa kade hee rajai naahee moorakh bhukh na jaaee |
No one is ever satisfied and fulfilled by evil and corruption. The hunger of the fool is not satisfied.
ਦੂਜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਲਗਿ ਵਿਗੁਤਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
doojai sabh ko lag vigutaa bin satigur boojh na paaee |
Attached to duality, all are ruined; without the True Guru, there is no understanding.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥
satigur seve so sukh paae jis no kirapaa kare rajaaee |20|
Those who serve the True Guru find peace; they are blessed with Grace by the Will of the Lord. ||20||

Salok, First Mehl:
ਸਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੇ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
saram dharam due naanakaa je dhan palai paae |
Modesty and righteousness both, O Nanak, are qualities of those who are blessed with true wealth.
ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਨ ਕਾਂਢੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਇ ॥
so dhan mitru na kaandteeai jit sir chottaan khaae |
Do not refer to that wealth as your friend, which leads you to get your head beaten.
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਪਲੈ ਧਨੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰ ॥
jin kai palai dhan vasai tin kaa naau fakeer |
Those who possess only this worldly wealth are known as paupers.
ਜਿਨੑ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਤੂ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ ॥੧॥
jina kai hiradai too vaseh te nar gunee gaheer |1|
But those, within whose hearts You dwell, O Lord - those people are oceans of virtue. ||1||

ਦੁਖੀ ਦੁਨੀ ਸਹੇੜੀਐ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥
dukhee dunee saherreeai jaae ta lageh dukh |
Worldly possessions are obtained by pain and suffering; when they are gone, they leave pain and suffering.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਲਥੀ ਭੁਖ ॥
naanak sache naam bin kisai na lathee bhukh |
O Nanak, without the True Name, hunger is never satisfied.
ਰੂਪੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਾਂ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਭੁਖ ॥
roopee bhukh na utarai jaan dekhaan taan bhukh |
Beauty does not satisfy hunger; when the man sees beauty, he hungers even more.
ਜੇਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਤੇਤੇ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥੨॥
jete ras sareer ke tete lageh dukh |2|
As many as are the pleasures of the body, so many are the pains which afflict it. ||2||

ਅੰਧੀ ਕੰਮੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਤਨੁ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
andhee kamee andh man man andhai tan andh |
Acting blindly, the mind becomes blind. The blind mind makes the body blind.
ਚਿਕੜਿ ਲਾਇਐ ਕਿਆ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਥਰ ਬੰਧੁ ॥
chikarr laaeiai kiaa theeai jaan tuttai pathar bandh |
Why make a dam with mud and plaster? Even a dam made of stones gives way.
ਬੰਧੁ ਤੁਟਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਥ ॥
bandh tuttaa berree nahee naa tulahaa naa haath |
The dam has burst. There is no boat. There is no raft. The water's depth is unfathomable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਕੇਤੇ ਡੁਬੇ ਸਾਥ ॥੩॥
naanak sache naam vin kete ddube saath |3|
O Nanak, without the True Name, many multitudes have drowned. ||3||

ਲਖ ਮਣ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਲਖ ਮਣ ਰੁਪਾ ਲਖ ਸਾਹਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹ ॥
lakh man sueinaa lakh man rupaa lakh saahaa sir saah |
Thousands of pounds of gold, and thousands of pounds of silver; the king over the heads of thousands of kings.
ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥
lakh lasakar lakh vaaje neje lakhee ghorree paatisaah |
Thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and spearmen; the emperor of thousands of horsemen.
ਜਿਥੈ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਸਗਾਹ ॥
jithai saaeir langhanaa agan paanee asagaah |
The unfathomable ocean of fire and water must be crossed.
ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਧਾਹੀ ਪਵੈ ਕਹਾਹ ॥
kandhee dis na aavee dhaahee pavai kahaah |
The other shore cannot be seen; only the roar of pitiful cries can be heard.
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਥੈ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਸਾਹ ਕੇਈ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥੪॥
naanak othai jaaneeeh saah keee paatisaah |4|
O Nanak, there, it shall be known, whether anyone is a king or an emperor. ||4||

Pauree:
ਇਕਨੑਾ ਗਲੀਂ ਜੰਜੀਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥
eikanaa galeen janjeer band rabaaneeai |
Some have chains around their necks, in bondage to the Lord.
ਬਧੇ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥
badhe chhutteh sach sach pachhaaneeai |
They are released from bondage, realizing the True Lord as True.
ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
likhiaa palai paae so sach jaaneeai |
One whose pre-ordained destiny is activated, comes to know the True Lord.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukamee hoe niberr geaa jaaneeai |
By God's Command, it is ordained. When the mortal goes, he knows.
ਭਉਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥
bhaujal taaranahaar sabad pachhaaneeai |
Realize the Word of the Shabad, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਚੋਰ ਜਾਰ ਜੂਆਰ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀਐ ॥
chor jaar jooaar peerre ghaaneeai |
Thieves, adulterers and gamblers are pressed like seeds in the mill.
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੜੑਵਾਣੀਐ ॥
nindak laaeitabaar mile harravaaneeai |
Slanderers and gossipers are hand-cuffed.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨੧॥
guramukh sach samaae su daragah jaaneeai |21|
The Gurmukh is absorbed in the True Lord, and is famous in the Court of the Lord. ||21||

aauar baat doojee na janaaee |
ਕੈ ਬੀਰਮ ਕਹ ਬਾਧਿ ਪਠਾਵਹੁ ॥

ਕੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੰਗ ਜੁਧ ਮਚਾਵਹੁ ॥੨੩॥

ਨਿਰਭੈ ਚਲੀ ਜੁਧ ਕੇ ਕਾਜਾ ॥
nirabhai chalee judh ke kaajaa |
ਹੈ ਗੈ ਰਥ ਸਾਜਤ ਸਰ ਸਾਜਾ ॥੨੪॥

bahai teer taravaar kaatee kattaaree |
ਕਹੂੰ ਕੇਤੁ ਫਾਟੇ ਗਿਰੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਟੂਟੇ ॥
kahoon ket faatte gire chhatr ttootte |
ਕਹੂੰ ਮਤ ਦੰਤੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਾਜ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੨੫॥

ਕਹੂੰ ਬਾਜ ਜੂਝੇ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਮਤੰਗੈ ॥

kahoon naag maare biraajai utangai |
ਕਹੂੰ ਬੀਰ ਡਾਰੇ ਪਰੇ ਬਰਮ ਫਾਟੇ ॥
kahoon beer ddaare pare baram faatte |
ਕਹੂੰ ਖੇਤ ਖਾਡੇ ਲਸੈ ਚਰਮ ਕਾਟੇ ॥੨੬॥

ਗਿਰੇ ਬੀਰ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਾ ਲੌ ਗਨਾਊ ॥
gire beer maare kaa lau ganaaoo |
ਕਹੌ ਜੋ ਸਭੈ ਏਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੈ ਬਨਾਊ ॥
kahau jo sabhai ek granthai banaaoo |
ਜਥਾ ਸਕਤਿ ਕੈ ਅਲਪ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
jathaa sakat kai alap taa te uchaaro |
ਸੁਨੋ ਕਾਨ ਦੈ ਕੈ ਸਭੇ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥੨੭॥
suno kaan dai kai sabhe hee piaaro |27|
ਇਤੈ ਖਾਨ ਢੂਕੇ ਉਤੈ ਰਾਜ ਨੀਕੇ ॥
eitai khaan dtooke utai raaj neeke |
ਹਠੀ ਰੋਸ ਬਾਢੇ ਸੁ ਗਾਢੇ ਅਨੀਕੇ ॥
hatthee ros baadte su gaadte aneeke |
ਲਰੇ ਕੋਪ ਕੈ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਏਕੈ ਨ ਭਾਜ︀ਯੋ ॥
lare kop kai kai su ekai na bhaajayo |
ਘਰੀ ਚਾਰਿ ਲੌ ਸਾਰ ਸੌ ਸਾਰ ਬਾਜ︀ਯੋ ॥੨੮॥

ਤਹਾ ਸੰਖ ਭੇਰੀ ਘਨੇ ਨਾਦ ਬਾਜੇ ॥

ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗੈ ਮੁਚੰਗੈ ਉਪੰਗੈ ਬਿਰਾਜੇ ॥
mridangai muchangai upangai biraaje |
ਕਹੂੰ ਨਾਇ ਨਾਫੀਰਿਯੈਂ ਔ ਨਗਾਰੇ ॥
kahoon naae naafeeriyain aau nagaare |

mare svaam ke kaajahoon ko nibaahee |
ਤਹਾ ਕੌਚ ਧਾਰੇ ਚੜੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
tahaa kauach dhaare charre chhatr dhaaree |
ਮਿਲੈ ਮੇਲ ਮਾਨੋ ਮਦਾਰੈ ਮਦਾਰੀ ॥੩੦॥
milai mel maano madaarai madaaree |30|
ਕਿਤੇ ਭੂਮਿ ਲੋਟੈ ਸੁ ਹਾਥੈ ਉਚਾਏ ॥
kite bhoom lottai su haathai uchaae |
ਡਰੈ ਸੇਖ ਜੈਸੇ ਸਮਾਈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
ddarai sekh jaise samaaee samaae |
ਜੁਝੈ ਜ੍ਵਾਨ ਜੋਧਾ ਜਗੇ ਜੋਰ ਜੰਗੈ ॥
jujhai jvaan jodhaa jage jor jangai |
ਮਨੋ ਪਾਨ ਕੈ ਭੰਗ ਸੋਏ ਮਲੰਗੈ ॥੩੧॥
mano paan kai bhang soe malangai |31|
ਬਹੈ ਆਨ ਐਸੇ ਬਚੈ ਬੀਰ ਕੌਨੈ ॥
bahai aan aise bachai beer kauanai |
ਲਰਿਯੋ ਆਨਿ ਜੋ ਪੈ ਗਯੋ ਜੂਝਿ ਤੌਨੈ ॥
lariyo aan jo pai gayo joojh tauanai |
ਤਹਾ ਜੋਜਨੰ ਪਾਚ ਭਯੋ ਬੀਰ ਖੇਤੰ ॥
tahaa jojanan paach bhayo beer khetan |
ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ਪਰੇ ਬੀਰ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦੇ ਬਿਚੇਤੰ ॥੩੨॥

ਕਹੂੰ ਬੀਰ ਬੈਤਾਲ ਬੀਨਾ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥
kahoon beer baitaal beenaa bajaavai |
ਕਹੂੰ ਜੋਗਨੀਯੈਂ ਖਰੀ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
kahoon joganeeyain kharee geet gaavai |
ਕਹੂੰ ਲੈ ਬਰੰਗਨਿ ਬਰੈਂ ਵੈ ਤਿਸੀ ਕੋ ॥
kahoon lai barangan barain vai tisee ko |
ਲਹੈ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਜੁਧ ਜੁਝੋ ਜਿਸੀ ਕੋ ॥੩੩॥
