har bhaj aan karam bikaar |
Meditate, vibrate on the Lord; other actions are corrupt.
ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਾਲ ਗ੍ਰਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maan mohu na bujhat trisanaa kaal gras sansaar |1| rahaau |
Pride, attachment and desire are not quenched; the world is in the grip of death. ||1||Pause||
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਵਤ ਹਸਤ ਸੋਵਤ ਅਉਧ ਬਿਤੀ ਅਸਾਰ ॥
khaat peevat hasat sovat aaudh bitee asaar |
Eating, drinking, laughing and sleeping, life passes uselessly.
ਨਰਕ ਉਦਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੰਤ ਜਲਤੋ ਜਮਹਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਾਰ ॥੧॥
narak udar bhramant jalato jameh keenee saar |1|
The mortal wanders in reincarnation, burning in the hellish environment of the womb; in the end, he is destroyed by death. ||1||
ਪਰ ਦ੍ਰੋਹ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਾਪ ਰਤ ਕਰ ਝਾਰ ॥
par droh karat bikaar nindaa paap rat kar jhaar |
He practices fraud, cruelty and slander against others; he sins, and washes his hands.
ਬਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਮ ਮੋਹ ਮਹਾਂ ਅੰਧਾਰ ॥੨॥
binaa satigur boojh naahee tam moh mahaan andhaar |2|
Without the True Guru, he has no understanding; he is lost in the utter darkness of anger and attachment. ||2||
ਬਿਖੁ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਖਾਇ ਮੂਠੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ॥
bikh tthgauree khaae moottho chit na sirajanahaar |
He takes the intoxicating drugs of cruelty and corruption, and is plundered. He is not conscious of the Creator Lord God.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਤ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਆਰੋ ਮਾਤੰਗ ਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥੩॥
gobind gupat hoe rahio niaaro maatang mat ahankaar |3|
The Lord of the Universe is hidden and unattached. The mortal is like a wild elephant, intoxicated with the wine of egotism. ||3||
ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਤ ਰਾਖੇ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
kar kripaa prabh sant raakhe charan kamal adhaar |
In His Mercy, God saves His Saints; they have the Support of His Lotus Feet.
ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਆਇਓ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੨੯॥

Meditate on the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and attain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੰਗ ਕਰਤੀ ਮਹਾ ਕੇਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har sang rang karatee mahaa kel |1| rahaau |
Imbued with the Love of the Lord, you shall totally play with Him. ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਪਨ ਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

The world is a dream.
ਮਿਥਨੀ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥
mithanee bisathaar |
Its expanse is false.
ਸਖੀ ਕਾਇ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੇਲ ॥੧॥
sakhee kaae mohi mohilee pria preet ridai mel |1|
O my companion, why are you so enticed by the Enticer? Enshrine the Love of Your Beloved within your heart. ||1||
ਸਰਬ ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

He is total love and affection.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਰੀ ਦਇਆਰੁ ॥

God is always merciful.
ਕਾਂਏਂ ਆਨ ਆਨ ਰੁਚੀਐ ॥
kaanen aan aan rucheeai |
Others - why are you involved with others?
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਚੀਐ ॥
har sang sang khacheeai |
Remain involved with the Lord.
ਜਉ ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਪਾਏ ॥
jau saadhasang paae |
When you join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy,
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
kahu naanak har dhiaae |
says Nanak, meditate on the Lord.

ਕੰਚਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਦਤ ਕਰਾ ॥
kanchanaa bahu dat karaa |
You may make donations of gold,
ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਧਰਾ ॥
bhoom daan arap dharaa |
and give away land in charity
ਮਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਸੋਚ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਤ ॥
man anik soch pavitr karat |
and purify your mind in various ways,
ਨਾਹੀ ਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਮਨ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naahee re naam tul man charan kamal laage |1| rahaau |
but none of this is equal to the Lord's Name. Remain attached to the Lord's Lotus Feet. ||1||Pause||
ਚਾਰਿ ਬੇਦ ਜਿਹਵ ਭਨੇ ॥
chaar bed jihav bhane |
You may recite the four Vedas with your tongue,
ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਖਸਟ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਸੁਨੇ ॥
das asatt khasatt sravan sune |
and listen to the eighteen Puraanas and the six Shaastras with your ears,
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨੇ ॥
nahee tul gobid naam dhune |
but these are not equal to the celestial melody of the Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe.
ਮਨ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੧॥

Remain attached to the Lord's Lotus Feet. ||1||
ਬਰਤ ਸੰਧਿ ਸੋਚ ਚਾਰ ॥
barat sandh soch chaar |
You may observe fasts, and say your prayers, purify yourself
ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕੁੰਟਿ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰ ॥
kriaa kuntt niraahaar |
and do good deeds; you may go on pilgrimages everywhere and eat nothing at all.
ਅਪਰਸ ਕਰਤ ਪਾਕਸਾਰ ॥
aparas karat paakasaar |
You may cook your food without touching anyone;
ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥
nivalee karam bahu bisathaar |
you may make a great show of cleansing techniques,
ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਕਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
dhoop deep karate har naam tul na laage |
and burn incense and devotional lamps, but none of these are equal to the Lord's Name.
ਰਾਮ ਦਇਆਰ ਸੁਨਿ ਦੀਨ ਬੇਨਤੀ ॥
raam deaar sun deen benatee |
O Merciful Lord, please hear the prayer of the meek and the poor.
ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਨੈਨ ਪੇਖਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਸਟ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੩੧॥

Please grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, that I may see You with my eyes. The Naam is so sweet to servant Nanak. ||2||2||131||

ਸੰਤਨ ਕੈ ਚਰਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਤਿਆਗੇ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਲਬਧਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
santan kai charan laage kaam krodh lobh tiaage gur gopaal bhe kripaal labadh apanee paaee |1|
Grasping hold of the Feet of the Saints, I have abandoned sexual desire, anger and greed. The Guru, the Lord of the World, has been kind to me, and I have realized my destiny. ||1||
ਬਿਨਸੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਧ ਟੂਟੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਬੰਧ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨਹ ਕੋਊ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥

My doubts and attachments have been dispelled, and the blinding bonds of Maya have been broken. My Lord and Master is pervading and permeating everywhere; no one is an enemy.
ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੋਖ ਗਏ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੈ ਚਰਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈ ॥੨॥੩॥੧੩੨॥
suaamee suprasan bhe janam maran dokh ge santan kai charan laag naanak gun gaaee |2|3|132|
My Lord and Master is totally satisfied with me; He has rid me of the pains of death and birth. Grasping hold of the Feet of the Saints, Nanak sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||3||132||
