ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਠਾਂਢੀ ॥
har ke naam kee gat tthaandtee |
The Name of the Lord is cooling and soothing.
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਕਾਢੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bed puraan simrit saadhoo jan khojat khojat kaadtee |1| rahaau |
Searching, searching the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, the Holy Saints have realized this. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਵ ਬਿਰੰਚ ਅਰੁ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਜਲਤੌ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥
siv biranch ar indr lok taa meh jalatau firiaa |
In the worlds of Shiva, Brahma and Indra, I wandered around, burning up with envy.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਏ ਸੀਤਲ ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥੧॥
simar simar suaamee bhe seetal dookh darad bhram hiriaa |1|
Meditating, meditating in remembrance on my Lord and Master, I became cool and calm; my pains, sorrows and doubts are gone. ||1||
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਤਰਿਓ ਪੁਰਾਤਨੁ ਨਵਤਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
jo jo tario puraatan navatan bhagat bhaae har devaa |
Whoever has been saved in the past or the present, was saved through loving devotional worship of the Divine Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੨॥੫੨॥੭੫॥
naanak kee benantee prabh jeeo milai sant jan sevaa |2|52|75|
This is Nanak's prayer: O Dear God, please let me serve the humble Saints. ||2||52||75||

ਜਿਹਵੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਉ ॥
jihave amrit gun har gaau |
O my tongue, sing the Ambrosial Praises of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਉਚਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har bol kathaa sun har kee ucharahu prabh ko naau |1| rahaau |
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, listen to the Lord's Sermon, and chant God's Name. ||1||Pause||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਭਾਉ ॥
raam naam ratan dhan sanchahu man tan laavahu bhaau |
So gather in the jewel, the wealth of the Lord's Name; love God with your mind and body.
ਆਨ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥
aan bibhoot mithiaa kar maanahu saachaa ihai suaau |1|
You must realize that all other wealth is false; this alone is the true purpose of life. ||1||
ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕਸ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਉ ॥
jeea praan mukat ko daataa ekas siau liv laau |
He is the Giver of the soul, the breath of life and liberation; lovingly tune in to the One and Only Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਦੇਤ ਸਗਲ ਅਪਿਆਉ ॥੨॥੫੩॥੭੬॥
kahu naanak taa kee saranaaee det sagal apiaau |2|53|76|
Says Nanak, I have entered His Sanctuary; He gives sustenance to all. ||2||53||76||

Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਹੋਤੀ ਨਹੀ ਕਵਨ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
hotee nahee kavan kachh karanee |
I cannot do anything else.
ਇਹੈ ਓਟ ਪਾਈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤਹ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਏਕ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eihai ott paaee mil santah gopaal ek kee saranee |1| rahaau |
I have taken this Support, meeting the Saints; I have entered the Sanctuary of the One Lord of the World. ||1||Pause||
ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਇਆ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਕੀ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
panch dokh chhidr eaa tan meh bikhai biaadh kee karanee |
The five wicked enemies are within this body; they lead the mortal to practice evil and corruption.
ਆਸ ਅਪਾਰ ਦਿਨਸ ਗਣਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਜਾਤ ਬਲੁ ਜਰਣੀ ॥੧॥
aas apaar dinas gan raakhe grasat jaat bal jaranee |1|
He has infinite hope, but his days are numbered, and old age is sapping his strength. ||1||
ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਸਰਬ ਦੋਖ ਭੈ ਹਰਣੀ ॥
anaathah naath deaal sukh saagar sarab dokh bhai haranee |
He is the Help of the helpless, the Merciful Lord, the Ocean of Peace, the Destroyer of all pains and fears.
ਮਨਿ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਪੇਖਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਰਣੀ ॥੨॥੫੪॥੭੭॥
man baanchhat chitavat naanak daas pekh jeevaa prabh charanee |2|54|77|
Slave Nanak longs for this blessing, that he may live, gazing upon the Feet of God. ||2||54||77||

Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਫੀਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਦ ॥
feeke har ke naam bin saad |
Without the Lord's Name, flavors are tasteless and insipid.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਈਐ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਨਾਦ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
amrit ras keeratan har gaaeeai ahinis pooran naad |1| rahaau |
Sing the Sweet Ambrosial Praises of the Lord's Kirtan; day and night, the Sound-current of the Naad will resonate and resound. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਮਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਖਾਦ ॥
simarat saant mahaa sukh paaeeai mitt jaeh sagal bikhaad |
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, total peace and bliss are obtained, and all sorrows are taken away.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਆਵਹੁ ਲਾਦਿ ॥੧॥
har har laabh saadhasang paaeeai ghar lai aavahu laad |1|
The profit of the Lord, Har, Har, is found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; so load it and bring it on home. ||1||
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚੋ ਅੰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਜਾਦ ॥
sabh te aooch aooch te aoocho ant nahee marajaad |
He is the Highest of all, the Highest of the high; His celestial ecomony has no limit.
ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥੨॥੫੫॥੭੮॥
baran na saakau naanak mahimaa pekh rahe bisamaad |2|55|78|
Nanak cannot even express His Glorious Grandeur; gazing upon Him, he is wonder-struck. ||2||55||78||

Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
aaeo sunan parran kau baanee |
The mortal came to hear and chant the Word of the Guru's Bani.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam visaar lageh an laalach birathaa janam paraanee |1| rahaau |
But he has forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and he has become attached to other temptations. His life is totally worthless! ||1||Pause||
ਸਮਝੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਚੇਤਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਥੀ ਸੰਤਨ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥
samajh achet chet man mere kathee santan akath kahaanee |
O my unconscious mind, become conscious and figure it out; the Saints speak the Unspoken Speech of the Lord.
ਲਾਭੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਅਰਾਧਹੁ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
laabh laihu har ridai araadhahu chhuttakai aavan jaanee |1|
So gather in your profits - worship and adore the Lord within your heart; your coming and going in reincarnation shall end. ||1||
ਉਦਮੁ ਸਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਤੁਮੑਰੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
audam sakat siaanap tumaree dehi ta naam vakhaanee |
Efforts, powers and clever tricks are Yours; if You bless me with them, I repeat Your Name.
ਸੇਈ ਭਗਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਣੀ ॥੨॥੫੬॥੭੯॥
seee bhagat bhagat se laage naanak jo prabh bhaanee |2|56|79|
They alone are devotees, and they alone are attached to devotional worship, O Nanak, who are pleasing to God. ||2||56||79||

Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਧਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥
dhanavant naam ke vanajaare |
Those who deal in the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are wealthy.
ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saanjhee karahu naam dhan khaattahu gur kaa sabad veechaare |1| rahaau |
So become a partner with them, and earn the wealth of the Naam. Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||Pause||
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਰਵੈਰਾ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
chhoddahu kapatt hoe niravairaa so prabh sang nihaare |
Abandon your deception, and go beyond vengeance; see God who is always with you.
ਸਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਣਜਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਆਵਹੁ ਹਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
sach dhan vanajahu sach dhan sanchahu kabahoo na aavahu haare |1|
Deal only in this true wealth and gather in this true wealth, and you shall never suffer loss. ||1||
ਖਾਤ ਖਰਚਤ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਿਖੁਟਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਗਨਤ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੇ ॥
khaat kharachat kichh nikhuttat naahee aganat bhare bhanddaare |
Eating and consuming it, it is never exhausted; God's treasures are overflowing.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਭਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਵਹੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥੨॥੫੭॥੮੦॥
kahu naanak sobhaa sang jaavahu paarabraham kai duaare |2|57|80|
Says Nanak, you shall go home to the Court of the Supreme Lord God with honor and respect. ||2||57||80||

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਖ︀ਯਾਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਬਾਦੇ ਦੋਇ ਸੌ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੨੮੪॥੫੪੧੨॥ਅਫਜੂੰ॥

ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਪਾਲਨੀ ਧਾਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਸੁ ਬਾਮਾ ॥
prajaa paalanee dhaam taa ke su baamaa |
ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਲੋਗ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸਭੈ ਆਨਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
prajaa log jaa kee sabhai aan maanai |
ਤਿਸੈ ਦੂਸਰੋ ਜਾਨ ਰਾਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥

ਸੁਧਾ ਸੈਨ ਨਾਮਾ ਰਹੈ ਭ੍ਰਿਤ ਤਾ ਕੇ ॥
sudhaa sain naamaa rahai bhrit taa ke |
ਰਹੈ ਰੀਝਿ ਬਾਲਾ ਲਖੈ ਨੈਨ ਵਾ ਕੇ ॥
rahai reejh baalaa lakhai nain vaa ke |
ਨ ਹ੍ਵੈਹੈ ਨ ਹੈ ਨ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥

ਨਰੀ ਨਾਗਨੀ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬੀ ਕੋ ਨ ਜਾਯੋ ॥੨॥

sumat matee taa kee ik kanayaa |
ਧਰਨੀ ਤਲ ਕੇ ਭੀਤਰ ਧੰਨ੍ਰਯਾ ॥੩॥
dharanee tal ke bheetar dhanrayaa |3|
ਸੁਧਾ ਸੈਨ ਤਿਨ ਜਬੈ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ ॥
sudhaa sain tin jabai nihaaraa |
ਹਰਿ ਅਰਿ ਸਰ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਮਾਰਾ ॥
har ar sar taa ke tan maaraa |
ਪਠੌ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥
patthau sahacharee taeh bulaayo |
ਸੋ ਨਰ ਧਾਮ ਨ ਵਾ ਕੇ ਆਯੋ ॥੪॥
so nar dhaam na vaa ke aayo |4|
ਨਾਹਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਿਮਿ ਜਿਮਿ ਵਹ ਕਹੈ ॥
naeh naeh jim jim veh kahai |
ਤਿਮਿ ਤਿਮਿ ਹਠਿ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰ ਗਹੈ ॥
tim tim hatth isatree kar gahai |
ਅਧਿਕ ਦੂਤਕਾ ਤਹਾ ਪਠਾਵੈ ॥
adhik dootakaa tahaa patthaavai |
ਕ︀ਯੋਹੂੰ ਧਾਮ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੫॥
kayohoon dhaam mitr neh aavai |5|
ਜ︀ਯੋਂ ਜ︀ਯੋਂ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਧਾਮਾ ॥
jayon jayon mitr na aavai dhaamaa |
ਤ︀ਯੋਂ ਤ︀ਯੋਂ ਅਤਿ ਬ︀ਯਾਕੁਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬਾਮਾ ॥
tayon tayon at bayaakul hvai baamaa |
ਬਹੁ ਦੂਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਧਾਮ ਲੁਟਾਵੈ ॥
bahu dootin te dhaam luttaavai |
ਪਲ ਪਲ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਤਿਹ ਧਾਮ ਪਠਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
pal pal prat tih dhaam patthaavai |6|
ਸਾਹ ਸੁਤਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
saah sutaa bahu bidh kar haaree |
ਸੁਧਾ ਸੈਨ ਸੌ ਭਈ ਨ ਯਾਰੀ ॥
sudhaa sain sau bhee na yaaree |
ਤਬ ਅਬਲਾ ਇਹ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਪਕਾਯੋ ॥
tab abalaa ih mantr pakaayo |
ਇਕ ਦੂਤੀ ਕਹ ਤਹਾ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
eik dootee keh tahaa patthaayo |7|
ਚਲੀ ਚਲੀ ਸਹਚਰਿ ਤਹ ਗਈ ॥
chalee chalee sahachar teh gee |
ਜਿਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਸੁਧਿ ਮਿਤਵਾ ਕੀ ਭਈ ॥
jih grih sudh mitavaa kee bhee |
ਪਕਰਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਤੇ ਸੋਤ ਜਗਾਯੋ ॥
pakar bhujaa te sot jagaayo |
ਚਲਹੁ ਅਬੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥੮॥
chalahu abai nrip triyeh bulaayo |8|
ਮੂਰਖ ਕਛੂ ਬਾਤ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
moorakh kachhoo baat neh paaee |
ਸਹਚਰਿ ਤਹਾ ਸੰਗ ਕਰਿ ਲ︀ਯਾਈ ॥
sahachar tahaa sang kar layaaee |
ਬੈਠੀ ਸੁਤਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਕੀ ਜਹਾ ॥
baitthee sutaa saahu kee jahaa |
ਲੈ ਆਈ ਮਿਤਵਾ ਕਹ ਤਹਾ ॥੯॥
lai aaee mitavaa keh tahaa |9|
ਵਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਐਸੇ ਜਿਯ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
veh moorakh aise jiy jaanaa |
ਸਾਹੁ ਸੁਤਾ ਕੋ ਛਲ ਨ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
saahu sutaa ko chhal na pachhaanaa |
ਰਾਨੀ ਅਟਕਿ ਸੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਰ ਗਈ ॥
raanee attak su muhi par gee |
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਹਮੈ ਬੁਲਾਵਤ ਭਈ ॥੧੦॥
taa te hamai bulaavat bhee |10|
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਭੋਗ ਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਹੌ ॥
taa ke saath bhog mai kar hau |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਆਸਨ ਧਰਿ ਹੌ ॥
bhaat bhaat ke aasan dhar hau |
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਨਾਰੀ ਕਹਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਝੈ ਹੌ ॥
nrip naaree keh adhik rijhai hau |
ਜੋ ਮੁਖਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਹੌ ਸੋਈ ਪੈ ਹੌ ॥੧੧॥
jo mukh mang hau soee pai hau |11|
ਸਾਹ ਸੁਤਾ ਸੋ ਕੀਨਾ ਸੰਗਾ ॥
saah sutaa so keenaa sangaa |
ਲਖਤ ਭਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੀ ਅਰਧੰਗਾ ॥
lakhat bhayo nrip kee aradhangaa |
ਮੂਰਖ ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
moorakh bhed abhed na paayo |
ਇਹ ਛਲ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਮੂੰਡ ਮੁਡਾਯੋ ॥੧੨॥
