ਮਾਹਾ ਮਾਹ ਮੁਮਾਰਖੀ ਚੜਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਬਸੰਤੁ ॥
maahaa maah mumaarakhee charriaa sadaa basant |
Among the months, blessed is this month, when spring always comes.
ਪਰਫੜੁ ਚਿਤ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਸੋਇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ॥੧॥
parafarr chit samaal soe sadaa sadaa gobind |1|
Blossom forth, O my consciousness, contemplating the Lord of the Universe, forever and ever. ||1||
ਭੋਲਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥
bholiaa haumai surat visaar |
O ignorant one, forget your egotistical intellect.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਨ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਣੁ ਲੈ ਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
haumai maar beechaar man gun vich gun lai saar |1| rahaau |
Subdue your ego, and contemplate Him in your mind; gather in the virtues of the Sublime, Virtuous Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਕਰਮ ਪੇਡੁ ਸਾਖਾ ਹਰੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਫਲੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
karam pedd saakhaa haree dharam ful fal giaan |
Karma is the tree, the Lord's Name the branches, Dharmic faith the flowers, and spiritual wisdom the fruit.
ਪਤ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਛਾਵ ਘਣੀ ਚੂਕਾ ਮਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
pat paraapat chhaav ghanee chookaa man abhimaan |2|
Realization of the Lord are the leaves, and eradication of the pride of the mind is the shade. ||2||
ਅਖੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੰਨੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਆਖਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
akhee kudarat kanee baanee mukh aakhan sach naam |
Whoever sees the Lord's Creative Power with his eyes, and hears the Guru's Bani with his ears, and utters the True Name with his mouth,
ਪਤਿ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਹੋਆ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੩॥
pat kaa dhan pooraa hoaa laagaa sehaj dhiaan |3|
attains the perfect wealth of honor, and intuitively focuses his meditation on the Lord. ||3||
ਮਾਹਾ ਰੁਤੀ ਆਵਣਾ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
maahaa rutee aavanaa vekhahu karam kamaae |
The months and the seasons come; see, and do your deeds.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰੇ ਨ ਸੂਕਹੀ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak hare na sookahee ji guramukh rahe samaae |4|1|
O Nanak, those Gurmukhs who remain merged in the Lord do not wither away; they remain green forever. ||4||1||

ਰੁਤਿ ਆਈਲੇ ਸਰਸ ਬਸੰਤ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

The season of spring, so delightful, has come.
ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਚਾਇ ॥
rang raate raveh si terai chaae |
Those who are imbued with love for You, O Lord, chant Your Name with joy.
ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਜ ਚੜਾਵਉ ਲਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
kis pooj charraavau lgau paae |1|
Whom else should I worship? At whose feet should I bow? ||1||
ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਕਹਉ ਰਾਇ ॥
teraa daasan daasaa khau raae |
I am the slave of Your slaves, O my Sovereign Lord King.
ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jagajeevan jugat na milai kaae |1| rahaau |
O Life of the Universe, there is no other way to meet You. ||1||Pause||
ਤੇਰੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਏਕਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਰੂਪ ॥
teree moorat ekaa bahut roop |
You have only One Form, and yet You have countless forms.
ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਜ ਚੜਾਵਉ ਦੇਉ ਧੂਪ ॥
kis pooj charraavau deo dhoop |
Which one should I worship? Before which one should I burn incense?
ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਹਾ ਪਾਇ ॥
teraa ant na paaeaa kahaa paae |
Your limits cannot be found. How can anyone find them?
ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਕਹਉ ਰਾਇ ॥੨॥
teraa daasan daasaa khau raae |2|
I am the slave of Your slaves, O my Sovereign Lord King. ||2||
ਤੇਰੇ ਸਠਿ ਸੰਬਤ ਸਭਿ ਤੀਰਥਾ ॥
tere satth sanbat sabh teerathaa |
The cycles of years and the places of pilgrimage are Yours, O Lord.
ਤੇਰਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਾ ॥
teraa sach naam paramesaraa |
Your Name is True, O Transcendent Lord God.
ਤੇਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਅਵਿਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
teree gat avigat nahee jaaneeai |
Your State cannot be known, O Eternal, Unchanging Lord God.
ਅਣਜਾਣਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥੩॥
anajaanat naam vakhaaneeai |3|
Although You are unknown, still we chant Your Name. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੈ ॥
naanak vechaaraa kiaa kahai |
What can poor Nanak say?
ਸਭੁ ਲੋਕੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਏਕਸੈ ॥
sabh lok salaahe ekasai |
All people praise the One Lord.
ਸਿਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੋਕਾ ਪਾਵ ਹੈ ॥
sir naanak lokaa paav hai |
Nanak places his head on the feet of such people.
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਜਾਉ ਜੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਵ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥
balihaaree jaau jete tere naav hai |4|2|
I am a sacrifice to Your Names, as many as there are, O Lord. ||4||2||

ਸੁਇਨੇ ਕਾ ਚਉਕਾ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੁਆਰ ॥
sueine kaa chaukaa kanchan kuaar |
The kitchen is golden, and the cooking pots are golden.
ਰੁਪੇ ਕੀਆ ਕਾਰਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥
rupe keea kaaraa bahut bisathaar |
The lines marking the cooking square are silver.
ਗੰਗਾ ਕਾ ਉਦਕੁ ਕਰੰਤੇ ਕੀ ਆਗਿ ॥
gangaa kaa udak karante kee aag |
The water is from the Ganges, and the firewood is sanctified.
ਗਰੁੜਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਦੁਧ ਸਿਉ ਗਾਡਿ ॥੧॥
garurraa khaanaa dudh siau gaadd |1|
The food is soft rice, cooked in milk. ||1||
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
re man lekhai kabahoo na paae |
O my mind, these things are worthless,
ਜਾਮਿ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਚ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaam na bheejai saach naae |1| rahaau |
if you are not drenched with the True Name. ||1||Pause||
ਦਸ ਅਠ ਲੀਖੇ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
das atth leekhe hoveh paas |
One may have the eighteen Puraanas written in his own hand;
ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਮੁਖਾਗਰ ਪਾਠਿ ॥
chaare bed mukhaagar paatth |
he may recite the four Vedas by heart,
ਪੁਰਬੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
purabee naavai varanaan kee daat |
and take ritual baths at holy festivals and give charitable donations;
ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੨॥
varat nem kare din raat |2|
he may observe the ritual fasts, and perform religious ceremonies day and night. ||2||
ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਸੇਖ ॥
kaajee mulaan hoveh sekh |
He may be a Qazi, a Mullah or a Shaykh,
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ॥
jogee jangam bhagave bhekh |
a Yogi or a wandering hermit wearing saffron-colored robes;
ਕੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਕਰਮਾ ਕੀ ਸੰਧਿ ॥
ko girahee karamaa kee sandh |
he may be a householder, working at his job;
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭ ਖੜੀਅਸਿ ਬੰਧਿ ॥੩॥
bin boojhe sabh kharreeas bandh |3|
but without understanding the essence of devotional worship, all people are eventually bound and gagged, and driven along by the Messenger of Death. ||3||
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਲਿਖੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ॥
jete jeea likhee sir kaar |
Each person's karma is written on his forehead.
ਕਰਣੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਗਿ ਸਾਰ ॥
karanee upar hovag saar |
According to their deeds, they shall be judged.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥
hukam kareh moorakh gaavaar |
Only the foolish and the ignorant issue commands.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak saache ke sifat bhanddaar |4|3|
O Nanak, the treasure of praise belongs to the True Lord alone. ||4||3||

ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਚੁਪ ਰਹੀ ॥
besvaa bain sunat chup rahee |
ਧਨ ਸਰਾਫ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਮੈ ਰਾਖੋ ॥
dhan saraaf ke ghar mai raakho |
ਕਾਮ ਭਏ ਦੀਜੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਭਾਖੋ ॥੫॥
kaam bhe deejai muhi bhaakho |5|
ਸੂਰਜ ਛਪਾ ਰੈਨਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਆਈ ॥
sooraj chhapaa rain hvai aaee |
ਤਬ ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਈ ॥
tab besvaa nrip bol patthaaee |
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਨੂਪ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਤਹ ਗਈ ॥

ਅਰਧ ਰਾਤ੍ਰਿ ਜਬ ਗਈ ਉਠੀ ਤਬ ਜਾਗਿ ਕਰਿ ॥
aradh raatr jab gee utthee tab jaag kar |
ਹੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਰੀਤਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੀ ਚਿਤ ਤੇ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿ ਕਰਿ ॥੭॥
ho preet reet raajaa kee chit te tayaag kar |7|
ਲੈ ਜਮਧਰ ਤਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
lai jamadhar taahee ko taeh prahaar kai |
ਉਠਿ ਰੁਦਿਨ ਕਿਯ ਆਪਿ ਕਿਲਕਟੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
autth rudin kiy aap kilakattee maar kai |
ਨਿਰਖਹੁ ਸਭ ਜਨ ਆਇ ਕਹਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਭਯੋ ॥
nirakhahu sabh jan aae kahaa kaaran bhayo |
ਹੋ ਤਸਕਰ ਕੋਊ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਅਬੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਗਯੋ ॥੮॥
ho tasakar koaoo sanghaar abai nrip ko gayo |8|
ਧੂਮ ਨਗਰ ਮੌ ਪਰੀ ਸਕਲ ਉਠਿ ਜਨ ਧਏ ॥
dhoom nagar mau paree sakal utth jan dhe |
ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਹ ਆਨਿ ਸਕਲ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਭਏ ॥
mritak nripat keh aan sakal nirakhat bhe |
ਹਾਇ ਹਾਇ ਕਰਿ ਗਿਰਹ ਧਰਨਿ ਮੁਰਛਾਇ ਕਰਿ ॥
haae haae kar girah dharan murachhaae kar |
ਹੋ ਧੂਰਿ ਡਾਰਿ ਸਿਰ ਗਿਰਹਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਕਰਿ ॥੯॥
ho dhoor ddaar sir gireh dharan dukh paae kar |9|
ਬਿਸਨ ਮਤੀ ਹੂੰ ਤਹਾ ਤਬੈ ਆਵਤ ਭਈ ॥
bisan matee hoon tahaa tabai aavat bhee |
ਨਿਰਖਿ ਰਾਇ ਕਹ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਦੁਖਾਕੁਲਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਭੀ ॥
nirakh raae keh mritak dukhaakul adhik bhee |
ਲੂਟਿ ਧਾਮ ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਕੋ ਲਿਯਾ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
loott dhaam besvaa ko liyaa sudhaar kai |
ਹੋ ਤਿਸੀ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਸਾਥ ਉਦਰ ਤਿਹ ਫਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥੧੦॥
