ਸੰਡਾ ਮਰਕਾ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ॥ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਹਮ ਹੀ ਪਚਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
sanddaa marakaa jaae pukaare | parrai nahee ham hee pach haare |
Sanda and Marka went and complained to Harnaakhash, "Your son does not read his lessons. We are tired of trying to teach him.
ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਰ ਤਾਲ ਬਜਾਵੈ ਚਟੀਆ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਗਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
raam kahai kar taal bajaavai chatteea sabhai bigaare |1|
He chants the Lord's Name, clapping his hands to keep the beat; he has spoiled all the other students. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਪਿਬੋ ਕਰੈ ॥
raam naamaa japibo karai |
He chants the Lord's Name,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਧਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hiradai har jee ko simaran dharai |1| rahaau |
and he has enshrined meditative remembrance of the Lord within his heart." ||1||Pause||
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਭ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕਰੈ ਪਟਰਾਨੀ ॥
basudhaa bas keenee sabh raaje binatee karai pattaraanee |
"Your father the king has conquered the whole world", said his mother the queen.
ਪੂਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਕਹਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ਤਿਨਿ ਤਉ ਅਉਰੈ ਠਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
poot prahilaad kahiaa nahee maanai tin tau aaurai tthaanee |2|
"O Prahlad my son, you do not obey him, so he has decided to deal with you in another way." ||2||
ਦੁਸਟ ਸਭਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੰਤਰ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਸਹ ਅਉਧ ਘਨੇਰੀ ॥
dusatt sabhaa mil mantar upaaeaa karasah aaudh ghaneree |
The council of villians met and resolved to send Prahlaad into the life hereafter.
ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਜਲ ਜੁਆਲਾ ਭੈ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਫੇਰੀ ॥੩॥
gir tar jal juaalaa bhai raakhio raajaa raam maaeaa feree |3|
Prahlaad was thrown off a mountain, into the water, and into a fire, but the Sovereign Lord God saved him, by changing the laws of nature. ||3||
ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਭੈ ਕੋਪਿਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਤਾਉ ਜੁ ਤੁਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
kaadt kharrag kaal bhai kopio mohi bataau ju tuhi raakhai |
Harnaakhash thundered with rage and threatened to kill Prahlaad. "Tell me, who can save you?"
ਪੀਤ ਪੀਤਾਂਬਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਣੀ ਥੰਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਖੈ ॥੪॥
peet peetaanbar tribhavan dhanee thanbh maeh har bhaakhai |4|
Prahlaad answered, "The Lord, the Master of the three worlds, is contained even in this pillar to which I am tied." ||4||
ਹਰਨਾਖਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਖਹ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਕੀਏ ਸਨਾਥਾ ॥
haranaakhas jin nakhah bidaario sur nar kee sanaathaa |
The Lord who tore Harnaakhash apart with His nails proclaimed Himself the Lord of gods and men.
ਕਹਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਹਮ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹ ਰਾਮੁ ਅਭੈ ਪਦ ਦਾਤਾ ॥੫॥੩॥੯॥
keh naamadeo ham narahar dhiaavah raam abhai pad daataa |5|3|9|
Says Naam Dayv, I meditate on the Lord, the Man-lion, the Giver of fearless dignity. ||5||3||9||
ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਪੂਛੈ ਸੁਨੁ ਬੇ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
sulataan poochhai sun be naamaa |
The Sultan said, "Listen, Naam Dayv:
ਦੇਖਉ ਰਾਮ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥
dekhau raam tumaare kaamaa |1|
let me see the actions of your Lord." ||1||
ਨਾਮਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੇ ਬਾਧਿਲਾ ॥
naamaa sulataane baadhilaa |
The Sultan arrested Naam Dayv,
ਦੇਖਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਬੀਠੁਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dekhau teraa har beetthulaa |1| rahaau |
and said, "Let me see your Beloved Lord." ||1||Pause||
ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਗਊ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀਵਾਇ ॥
bisamil gaoo dehu jeevaae |
"Bring this dead cow back to life.
ਨਾਤਰੁ ਗਰਦਨਿ ਮਾਰਉ ਠਾਂਇ ॥੨॥
naatar garadan maarau tthaane |2|
Otherwise, I shall cut off your head here and now." ||2||
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥
baadisaah aisee kiau hoe |
Naam Dayv answered, "O king, how can this happen?
ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਆ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
bisamil keea na jeevai koe |3|
No one can bring the dead back to life. ||3||
ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
meraa keea kachhoo na hoe |
I cannot do anything by my own actions.
ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
kar hai raam hoe hai soe |4|
Whatever the Lord does, that alone happens." ||4||
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹੁ ਚੜੑਿਓ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥
baadisaahu charraio ahankaar |
The arrogant king was enraged at this reply.
ਗਜ ਹਸਤੀ ਦੀਨੋ ਚਮਕਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
gaj hasatee deeno chamakaar |5|
He incited an elephant to attack. ||5||
ਰੁਦਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਕੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
rudan karai naame kee maae |
Naam Dayv's mother began to cry,
ਛੋਡਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਭਜਹਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੬॥
chhodd raam kee na bhajeh khudaae |6|
And she said, "Why don't you abandon your Lord Raam, and worship his Lord Allah?" ||6||
ਨ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੂੰਗੜਾ ਨ ਤੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
n hau teraa poongarraa na too meree maae |
Naam Dayv answered, "I am not your son, and you are not my mother.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਤਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੭॥
pindd parrai tau har gun gaae |7|
Even if my body dies, I will still sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord." ||7||
ਕਰੈ ਗਜਿੰਦੁ ਸੁੰਡ ਕੀ ਚੋਟ ॥
karai gajind sundd kee chott |
The elephant attacked him with his trunk,
ਨਾਮਾ ਉਬਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥੮॥
naamaa ubarai har kee ott |8|
but Naam Dayv was saved, protected by the Lord. ||8||
ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
kaajee mulaan kareh salaam |
The king said, "The Qazis and the Mullahs bow down to me,
ਇਨਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਲਿਆ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੯॥
ein hindoo meraa maliaa maan |9|
but this Hindu has trampled my honor." ||9||
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਨੇਹੁ ॥
baadisaah benatee sunehu |
The people pleaded with the king, "Hear our prayer, O king.
ਨਾਮੇ ਸਰ ਭਰਿ ਸੋਨਾ ਲੇਹੁ ॥੧੦॥
naame sar bhar sonaa lehu |10|
Here, take Naam Dayvs weight in gold, and release him." ||10||
ਮਾਲੁ ਲੇਉ ਤਉ ਦੋਜਕਿ ਪਰਉ ॥
maal leo tau dojak prau |
The king replied, "If I take the gold, then I will be consigned to hell,
ਦੀਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਉ ਭਰਉ ॥੧੧॥
deen chhodd duneea kau bhrau |11|
by forsaking my faith and gathering worldly wealth." ||11||
ਪਾਵਹੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਹਾਥਹੁ ਤਾਲ ॥
paavahu berree haathahu taal |
With his feet in chains, Naam Dayv kept the beat with his hands,
ਨਾਮਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਨ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੧੨॥
naamaa gaavai gun gopaal |12|
singing the Praises of the Lord. ||12||
ਗੰਗ ਜਮੁਨ ਜਉ ਉਲਟੀ ਬਹੈ ॥
gang jamun jau ulattee bahai |
"Even if the Ganges and the Jamunaa rivers flow backwards,
ਤਉ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਰਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
tau naamaa har karataa rahai |13|
I will still continue singing the Praises of the Lord." ||13||
ਸਾਤ ਘੜੀ ਜਬ ਬੀਤੀ ਸੁਣੀ ॥
saat gharree jab beetee sunee |
Three hours passed,
ਅਜਹੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਣੀ ॥੧੪॥
ajahu na aaeo tribhavan dhanee |14|
and even then, the Lord of the three worlds had not come. ||14||
ਪਾਖੰਤਣ ਬਾਜ ਬਜਾਇਲਾ ॥
paakhantan baaj bajaaeilaa |
Playing on the instrument of the feathered wings,
ਗਰੁੜ ਚੜੑੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਆਇਲਾ ॥੧੫॥
garurr charrae gobind aaeilaa |15|
the Lord of the Universe came, mounted on the eagle garura. ||15||
ਅਪਨੇ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਿ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
apane bhagat par kee pratipaal |
He cherished His devotee,
ਗਰੁੜ ਚੜੑੇ ਆਏ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੧੬॥
garurr charrae aae gopaal |16|
and the Lord came, mounted on the eagle garura. ||16||
ਕਹਹਿ ਤ ਧਰਣਿ ਇਕੋਡੀ ਕਰਉ ॥
kaheh ta dharan ikoddee krau |
The Lord said to him, "If you wish, I shall turn the earth sideways.
ਕਹਹਿ ਤ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਧਰਉ ॥੧੭॥
kaheh ta le kar aoopar dhrau |17|
If you wish, I shall turn it upside down. ||17||
ਕਹਹਿ ਤ ਮੁਈ ਗਊ ਦੇਉ ਜੀਆਇ ॥
kaheh ta muee gaoo deo jeeae |
If you wish, I shall bring the dead cow back to life.
ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥੧੮॥
sabh koee dekhai pateeae |18|
Everyone will see and be convinced." ||18||
ਨਾਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਸੇਲ ਮਸੇਲ ॥
naamaa pranavai sel masel |
Naam Dayv prayed, and milked the cow.
ਗਊ ਦੁਹਾਈ ਬਛਰਾ ਮੇਲਿ ॥੧੯॥
gaoo duhaaee bachharaa mel |19|
He brought the calf to the cow, and milked her. ||19||
ਦੂਧਹਿ ਦੁਹਿ ਜਬ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਭਰੀ ॥
doodheh duhi jab mattukee bharee |
When the pitcher was filled with milk,
ਲੇ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਆਗੇ ਧਰੀ ॥੨੦॥
le baadisaah ke aage dharee |20|
Naam Dayv took it and placed it before the king. ||20||
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹੁ ਮਹਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
baadisaahu mehal meh jaae |
The king went into his palace,
ਅਉਘਟ ਕੀ ਘਟ ਲਾਗੀ ਆਇ ॥੨੧॥
aaughatt kee ghatt laagee aae |21|
and his heart was troubled. ||21||
ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਇ ॥
kaajee mulaan binatee furamaae |
Through the Qazis and the Mullahs, the king offered his prayer,
ਬਖਸੀ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਗਾਇ ॥੨੨॥
bakhasee hindoo mai teree gaae |22|
"Forgive me, please, O Hindu; I am just a cow before you." ||22||
ਨਾਮਾ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ॥
naamaa kahai sunahu baadisaah |
Naam Dayv said, "Listen, O king:
ਇਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਤੀਆ ਮੁਝੈ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥੨੩॥
eihu kichh pateea mujhai dikhaae |23|
have I done this miracle? ||23||
ਇਸ ਪਤੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
eis pateea kaa ihai paravaan |
The purpose of this miracle is
ਸਾਚਿ ਸੀਲਿ ਚਾਲਹੁ ਸੁਲਿਤਾਨ ॥੨੪॥
saach seel chaalahu sulitaan |24|
that you, O king, should walk on the path of truth and humility." ||24||
ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਸਭ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
naamadeo sabh rahiaa samaae |
Naam Dayv became famous everywhere for this.
ਮਿਲਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਸਭ ਨਾਮੇ ਪਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨੫॥
mil hindoo sabh naame peh jaeh |25|
The Hindus all went together to Naam Dayv. ||25||
ਜਉ ਅਬ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਗਾਇ ॥
jau ab kee baar na jeevai gaae |
If the cow had not been revived,
ਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਕਾ ਪਤੀਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੨੬॥
t naamadev kaa pateea jaae |26|
people would have lost faith in Naam Dayv. ||26||
ਨਾਮੇ ਕੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਰਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
naame kee keerat rahee sansaar |
The fame of Naam Dayv spread throughout the world.
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਲੇ ਉਧਰਿਆ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨੭॥
bhagat janaan le udhariaa paar |27|
The humble devotees were saved and carried across with him. ||27||
ਸਗਲ ਕਲੇਸ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਭਇਆ ਖੇਦੁ ॥
sagal kales nindak bheaa khed |
All sorts of troubles and pains afflicted the slanderer.
ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਭੇਦੁ ॥੨੮॥੧॥੧੦॥
naame naaraaein naahee bhed |28|1|10|
There is no difference between Naam Dayv and the Lord. ||28||1||10||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਭੋਜ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਵੈ ਹੌ ॥
braham bhoj taa te karavai hau |
ਜੀਯੋ ਮਤੀ ਤਬਹੂੰ ਤੁਮ ਜਨਿਯਹੁ ॥
jeeyo matee tabahoon tum janiyahu |
ਮੋਰੀ ਸਾਚ ਕਹੀ ਤਬ ਮਨਿਯਹੁ ॥੭॥

ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਬਚਨਨ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਚਾਰਾ ॥
yau keh bachanan bahur uchaaraa |
ਪਤਿ ਗਯੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਅਨਤ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ ॥
pat gayo jab hee anat nihaaraa |
ਤਬ ਬਾਢੀ ਤਿਹ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
tab baadtee tih bol patthaayo |
ਕਾਮ ਭੋਗ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥੮॥
kaam bhog tih sang kamaayo |8|
ਜਾਟਿਨਿ ਭੋਗ ਜਬੈ ਜੜ ਆਯੋ ॥
jaattin bhog jabai jarr aayo |
ਆਨ ਰਮਤ ਲਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਰਿਸਾਯੋ ॥
aan ramat lakh triyeh risaayo |
ਕਾਢਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਮਹਾ ਪਸੁ ਧਯੋ ॥
kaadt kripaan mahaa pas dhayo |
ਕਰ ਤੇ ਪਕਰਿ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਲਯੋ ॥੯॥
kar te pakar sahacharee layo |9|
ਜਾਰ ਏਕ ਉਠਿ ਲਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੀ ॥
jaar ek utth laat prahaaree |
ਗਿਰਤ ਭਯੋ ਪਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਮੰਝਾਰੀ ॥
girat bhayo pas prithee manjhaaree |
ਦੇਹਿ ਛੀਨ ਤੈ ਉਠਿ ਨ ਸਕਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
dehi chheen tai utth na sakat bhayo |
ਜਾਰ ਪਤਰਿ ਭਾਜਿ ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ॥੧੦॥
jaar patar bhaaj jaat bhayo |10|
ਉਠਤ ਭਯੋ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ॥
autthat bhayo moorakh bahu kaalaa |
ਪਾਇਨ ਆਇ ਲਗੀ ਤਬ ਬਾਲਾ ॥
paaein aae lagee tab baalaa |
ਜੌ ਪਿਯ ਮੁਰ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਬਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
jau piy mur aparaadh bichaaro |
ਕਾਢਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਡਾਰੋ ॥੧੧॥

ਜਿਨ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਤੁਹਿ ਲਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੀ ॥
jin nirabhai tuhi laat prahaaree |
ਵਹਿ ਆਗੈ ਮੈ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥
veh aagai mai kavan bichaaree |
ਤੁਮ ਭੂਅ ਗਿਰੇ ਜਵਨ ਕੇ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
tum bhooa gire javan ke maare |
ਖਾਇ ਲੋਟਨੀ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਸੰਭਾਰੇ ॥੧੨॥
