Fifth Mehl:
ਜੋ ਪਾਥਰ ਕਉ ਕਹਤੇ ਦੇਵ ॥
jo paathar kau kahate dev |
Those who call a stone their god
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਵ ॥
taa kee birathaa hovai sev |
their service is useless.
ਜੋ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੀ ਪਾਂਈ ਪਾਇ ॥
jo paathar kee paanee paae |
Those who fall at the feet of a stone god
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ਅਜਾਂਈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
tis kee ghaal ajaanee jaae |1|
- their work is wasted in vain. ||1||
ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਹਮਰਾ ਸਦ ਬੋਲੰਤਾ ॥
tthaakur hamaraa sad bolantaa |
My Lord and Master speaks forever.
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sarab jeea kau prabh daan detaa |1| rahaau |
God gives His gifts to all living beings. ||1||Pause||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦੇਉ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
antar deo na jaanai andh |
The Divine Lord is within the self, but the spiritually blind one does not know this.
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕਾ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ਫੰਧੁ ॥
bhram kaa mohiaa paavai fandh |
Deluded by doubt, he is caught in the noose.
ਨ ਪਾਥਰੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
n paathar bolai naa kichh dee |
The stone does not speak; it does not give anything to anyone.
ਫੋਕਟ ਕਰਮ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਹੈ ਸੇਵ ॥੨॥
fokatt karam nihafal hai sev |2|
Such religious rituals are useless; such service is fruitless. ||2||
ਜੇ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਕਉ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਚੜਾਵੈ ॥
je miratak kau chandan charraavai |
If a corpse is anointed with sandalwood oil,
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
aus te kahahu kavan fal paavai |
what good does it do?
ਜੇ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਕਉ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਰੁਲਾਈ ॥
je miratak kau bisattaa maeh rulaaee |
If a corpse is rolled in manure,
ਤਾਂ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
taan miratak kaa kiaa ghatt jaaee |3|
what does it lose from this? ||3||
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਉ ਕਹਉ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥
kehat kabeer hau khau pukaar |
Says Kabeer, I proclaim this out loud
ਸਮਝਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥
samajh dekh saakat gaavaar |
behold, and understand, you ignorant, faithless cynic.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਰ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
doojai bhaae bahut ghar gaale |
The love of duality has ruined countless homes.
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤ ਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਾਲੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੨॥
raam bhagat hai sadaa sukhaale |4|4|12|
The Lord's devotees are forever in bliss. ||4||4||12||
ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਮੀਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਬੇਧੇ ॥
jal meh meen maaeaa ke bedhe |
The fish in the water is attached to Maya.
ਦੀਪਕ ਪਤੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਛੇਦੇ ॥
deepak patang maaeaa ke chhede |
The moth fluttering around the lamp is pierced through by Maya.
ਕਾਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਕਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥
kaam maaeaa kunchar kau biaapai |
The sexual desire of Maya afflicts the elephant.
ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਖਾਪੇ ॥੧॥
bhueiangam bhring maaeaa meh khaape |1|
The snakes and bumble bees are destroyed through Maya. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਐਸੀ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
maaeaa aisee mohanee bhaaee |
Such are the enticements of Maya, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਡਹਕਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jete jeea tete ddahakaaee |1| rahaau |
As many living beings are there are, have been deceived. ||1||Pause||
ਪੰਖੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
pankhee mrig maaeaa meh raate |
The birds and the deer are imbued with Maya.
ਸਾਕਰ ਮਾਖੀ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥
saakar maakhee adhik santaape |
Sugar is a deadly trap for the flies.
ਤੁਰੇ ਉਸਟ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਭੇਲਾ ॥
ture usatt maaeaa meh bhelaa |
Horses and camels are absorbed in Maya.
ਸਿਧ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਖੇਲਾ ॥੨॥
sidh chauraaseeh maaeaa meh khelaa |2|
The eighty-four Siddhas, the beings of miraculous spiritual powers, play in Maya. ||2||
ਛਿਅ ਜਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਬੰਦਾ ॥
chhia jatee maaeaa ke bandaa |
The six celibates are slaves of Maya.
ਨਵੈ ਨਾਥ ਸੂਰਜ ਅਰੁ ਚੰਦਾ ॥
navai naath sooraj ar chandaa |
So are the nine masters of Yoga, and the sun and the moon.
ਤਪੇ ਰਖੀਸਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਤਾ ॥
tape rakheesar maaeaa meh sootaa |
The austere disciplinarians and the Rishis are asleep in Maya.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਅਰੁ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤਾ ॥੩॥
maaeaa meh kaal ar panch dootaa |3|
Death and the five demons are in Maya. ||3||
ਸੁਆਨ ਸਿਆਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
suaan siaal maaeaa meh raataa |
Dogs and jackals are imbued with Maya.
ਬੰਤਰ ਚੀਤੇ ਅਰੁ ਸਿੰਘਾਤਾ ॥
bantar cheete ar singhaataa |
Monkeys, leopards and lions,
ਮਾਂਜਾਰ ਗਾਡਰ ਅਰੁ ਲੂਬਰਾ ॥
maanjaar gaaddar ar loobaraa |
cats, sheep, foxes,
ਬਿਰਖ ਮੂਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਾ ॥੪॥
birakh mool maaeaa meh paraa |4|
trees and roots are planted in Maya. ||4||
ਮਾਇਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭੀਨੇ ਦੇਵ ॥
maaeaa antar bheene dev |
Even the gods are drenched with Maya,
ਸਾਗਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਅਰੁ ਧਰਤੇਵ ॥
saagar indraa ar dharatev |
as are the oceans, the sky and the earth.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਸੁ ਉਦਰੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
keh kabeer jis udar tis maaeaa |
Says Kabeer, whoever has a belly to fill, is under the spell of Maya.
ਤਬ ਛੂਟੇ ਜਬ ਸਾਧੂ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੫॥੧੩॥
tab chhootte jab saadhoo paaeaa |5|5|13|
The mortal is emancipated only when he meets the Holy Saint. ||5||5||13||
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
jab lag meree meree karai |
As long as he cries out, Mine! Mine!,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਕਾਜੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਰੈ ॥
tab lag kaaj ek nahee sarai |
none of his tasks is accomplished.
ਜਬ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
jab meree meree mitt jaae |
When such possessiveness is erased and removed,
ਤਬ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾਜੁ ਸਵਾਰਹਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
tab prabh kaaj savaareh aae |1|
then God comes and resolves his affairs. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥
aisaa giaan bichaar manaa |
Contemplate such spiritual wisdom, O mortal man.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har kee na simarahu dukh bhanjanaa |1| rahaau |
Why not meditate in remembrance on the Lord, the Destroyer of pain? ||1||Pause||
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਿੰਘੁ ਰਹੈ ਬਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
jab lag singh rahai ban maeh |
As long as the tiger lives in the forest,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਬਨੁ ਫੂਲੈ ਹੀ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
tab lag ban foolai hee naeh |
the forest does not flower.
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਸਿਆਰੁ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਉ ਖਾਇ ॥
jab hee siaar singh kau khaae |
But when the jackal eats the tiger,
ਫੂਲਿ ਰਹੀ ਸਗਲੀ ਬਨਰਾਇ ॥੨॥
fool rahee sagalee banaraae |2|
then the entire forest flowers. ||2||
ਜੀਤੋ ਬੂਡੈ ਹਾਰੋ ਤਿਰੈ ॥
jeeto booddai haaro tirai |
The victorious are drowned, while the defeated swim across.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੈ ॥
gur parasaadee paar utarai |
By Guru's Grace, one crosses over and is saved.
ਦਾਸੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥
daas kabeer kahai samajhaae |
Slave Kabeer speaks and teaches:
ਕੇਵਲ ਰਾਮ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥੬॥੧੪॥
keval raam rahahu liv laae |3|6|14|
remain lovingly absorbed, attuned to the Lord alone. ||3||6||14||

ਆਨਿ ਧਾਮ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਬਸੀ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਖ ਉਪਜਾਇ ॥੨੦॥
aan dhaam bahuro basee hridai harakh upajaae |20|

ਸੋਭਾ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਵਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਹਤ ॥
sobhaa adhik tavan kee sohat |
ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਨਾਗ ਅਸੁਰ ਮਨ ਮੋਹਤ ॥੨॥
sur nar naag asur man mohat |2|

ਜਨੁ ਔਤਾਰ ਮਦਨ ਕੋ ਯਾ ਜਗ ਮੋ ਬਨੋ ॥
jan aauataar madan ko yaa jag mo bano |
ਬਿਤਨ ਕੇਤੁ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਮ ਕੁਅਰ ਕੈ ਜਾਨਿਯੈ ॥
bitan ket tih naam kuar kai jaaniyai |
ਹੋ ਜਾ ਸਮ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਕਤਹੁ ਬਖਾਨਿਯੈ ॥੩॥
ho jaa sam sundar avar na katahu bakhaaniyai |3|
ਨੈਨ ਹਰਿਨ ਕੇ ਹਰੇ ਬੈਨ ਪਿਕ ਕੇ ਹਰੇ ॥
nain harin ke hare bain pik ke hare |
ਜਨੁਕ ਸਾਨਿ ਪਰ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਦੋਊ ਬਾਢਿਨ ਧਰੇ ॥
januk saan par bisikh doaoo baadtin dhare |
ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇ ਲਗਤ ਨ ਕਾਢੇ ਜਾਤ ਹੈ ॥
binaa prahaare lagat na kaadte jaat hai |
ਹੋ ਖਟਕਤ ਹਿਯ ਕੇ ਮਾਝ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਯਰਾਤ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ho khattakat hiy ke maajh sadaa piyaraat hai |4|
ਨਿਰਖਿ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਤਰਿਨਿ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਭਈ ॥
nirakh tavan ko roop tarin mohit bhee |
ਲੋਕ ਲਾਜ ਕੁਲ ਕਾਨਿ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਦਈ ॥
lok laaj kul kaan tayaag tab hee dee |
ਆਸਿਕ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਭਾਤਿ ਰਹੀ ਉਰਝਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
aasik kee triy bhaat rahee urajhaae kai |
ਹੋ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਨ ਧੀਰਜ ਬਾਧਿ ਸੁ ਲਿਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੫॥
ho sakiyo na dheeraj baadh su liyo bulaae kai |5|

bhaat bhaat bhojaneh khavaaeis |
ਕੇਲ ਕਰਨ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਚਿਤ ਚਹਾ ॥
kel karan taa sau chit chahaa |
ਲਾਜਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਤਿਹ ਕਹਾ ॥੬॥
laaj bisaar pragatt tih kahaa |6|
ਬਿਤਨ ਕੇਤੁ ਜਬ ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
bitan ket jab yau sun paayo |
ਭੋਗ ਨ ਕਿਯੋ ਨਾਕ ਐਂਠਾਯੋ ॥
bhog na kiyo naak aintthaayo |
ਸੁਨਿ ਅਬਲਾ ਮੈ ਤੋਹਿ ਨ ਭਜਿਹੌ ॥
sun abalaa mai tohi na bhajihau |
ਨਾਰਿ ਆਪਨੀ ਕੌ ਨਹਿ ਤਜਿਹੌ ॥੭॥
naar aapanee kau neh tajihau |7|

ਜੌ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੋਟਿਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਲਛਿਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਇਲਾਜ ॥

ਧਰਮ ਆਪਨੌ ਛਾਡਿ ਤੁਹਿ ਤਊ ਨ ਭਜਹੌ ਆਜ ॥੮॥
dharam aapanau chhaadd tuhi taoo na bhajahau aaj |8|

ਤਾ ਕੌ ਬਾਧਿ ਭੋਹਰੇ ਡਾਰੋ ॥੯॥
taa kau baadh bhohare ddaaro |9|
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਬਾਧਿ ਭੋਹਰਾ ਡਾਰਾ ॥
taa kau baadh bhoharaa ddaaraa |
ਮੂਆ ਸਾਹੁ ਸੁਤ ਜਗਤ ਉਚਾਰਾ ॥
mooaa saahu sut jagat uchaaraa |
ਸੌਦਾ ਕਾਜ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਗਯੋ ॥
sauadaa kaaj kahiyo kahoon gayo |
ਚੋਰਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਲੂਟਿ ਧਨ ਲਯੋ ॥੧੦॥
choran maar loott dhan layo |10|
ਭੇਸ ਅਨੂਪ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਧਰਾ ॥
bhes anoop tarun tin dharaa |
ਅਭਰਨ ਅੰਗ ਅੰਗ ਮੈ ਕਰਾ ॥
abharan ang ang mai karaa |
ਬਿਤਨ ਕੇਤੁ ਕੇ ਢਿਗ ਚਲ ਗਈ ॥

ਭਾਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਨਿਹੋਰਤ ਭਈ ॥੧੧॥
