Bhairao, First Mehl:
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਬ ਧਨੁ ਧਾਰਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
hiradai naam sarab dhan dhaaran gur parasaadee paaeeai |
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the wealth and support of all; It is enshrined in the heart, by Guru's Grace.
ਅਮਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
amar padaarath te kirataarath sehaj dhiaan liv laaeeai |1|
One who gathers this imperishable wealth is fulfilled, and through intuitive meditation, is lovingly focused on the Lord. ||1||
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
man re raam bhagat chit laaeeai |
O mortal, focus your consciousness on devotional worship of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh raam naam jap hiradai sehaj setee ghar jaaeeai |1| rahaau |
As Gurmukh, meditate on the Name of the Lord in your heart, and you shall return to your home with intuitive ease. ||1||Pause||
ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਭਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
bharam bhed bhau kabahu na chhoottas aavat jaat na jaanee |
Doubt, separation and fear are never eradicated, and the mortal continues coming and going in reincarnation, as long as he does not know the Lord.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
bin har naam ko mukat na paavas ddoob mue bin paanee |2|
Without the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated; they drown and die without water. ||2||
ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਸਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਸਿ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
dhandhaa karat sagalee pat khovas bharam na mittas gavaaraa |
Busy with his worldly affairs, all honor is lost; the ignorant one is not rid of his doubts.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin gurasabad mukat nahee kab hee andhule dhandh pasaaraa |3|
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mortal is never liberated; he remains blindly entangled in the expanse of worldly affairs. ||3||
ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਆ ॥
akul niranjan siau man maaniaa man hee te man mooaa |
My mind is pleased and appeased with the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. Through the mind itself, the mind is subdued.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਆ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥
antar baahar eko jaaniaa naanak avar na dooaa |4|6|7|
Deep within my being, and outside as well, I know only the One Lord. O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||4||6||7||

Bhairao, First Mehl:
ਜਗਨ ਹੋਮ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਿਤ ਦੂਖ ਸਹੈ ॥
jagan hom pun tap poojaa deh dukhee nit dookh sahai |
You may give feasts, make burnt offerings, donate to charity, perform austere penance and worship, and endure pain and suffering in the body.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥
raam naam bin mukat na paavas mukat naam guramukh lahai |1|
But without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained. As Gurmukh, obtain the Naam and liberation. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਾ ॥
raam naam bin birathe jag janamaa |
Without the Lord's Name, birth into the world is useless.
ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਮਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bikh khaavai bikh bolee bolai bin naavai nihafal mar bhramanaa |1| rahaau |
Without the Name, the mortal eats poison and speaks poisonous words; he dies fruitlessly, and wanders in reincarnation. ||1||Pause||
ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪਾਠ ਬਿਆਕਰਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਕਾਲ ਕਰੈ ॥
pusatak paatth biaakaran vakhaanai sandhiaa karam tikaal karai |
The mortal may read scriptures, study grammar and say his prayers three times a day.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੨॥
bin gurasabad mukat kahaa praanee raam naam bin urajh marai |2|
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, where is liberation, O mortal? Without the Lord's Name, the mortal is entangled and dies. ||2||
ਡੰਡ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਗਵਨੁ ਅਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
ddandd kamanddal sikhaa soot dhotee teerath gavan at bhraman karai |
Walking sticks, begging bowls, hair tufts, sacred threads, loin cloths, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and wandering all around
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ॥੩॥
raam naam bin saant na aavai jap har har naam su paar parai |3|
- without the Lord's Name, peace and tranquility are not obtained. One who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, crosses over to the other side. ||3||
ਜਟਾ ਮੁਕਟੁ ਤਨਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਈ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
jattaa mukatt tan bhasam lagaaee basatr chhodd tan nagan bheaa |
The mortal's hair may be matted and tangled upon his head, and he may smear his body with ashes; he may take off his clothes and go naked.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਰਤ ਕੈ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਭੇਖੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੪॥
raam naam bin tripat na aavai kirat kai baandhai bhekh bheaa |4|
But without the Lord's Name, he is not satisfied; he wears religious robes, but he is bound by the karma of the actions he committed in past lives. ||4||
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ॥
jete jeea jant jal thal maheeal jatr katr too sarab jeea |
As many beings and creatures as there are in the water, on the land and in the sky - wherever they are, You are with them all, O Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੋਲਿ ਪੀਆ ॥੫॥੭॥੮॥
gur parasaad raakh le jan kau har ras naanak jhol peea |5|7|8|
By Guru's Grace, please preserve Your humble servant; O Lord, Nanak stirs up this juice, and drinks it in. ||5||7||8||

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
jaat kaa garab na kareeahu koee |
No one should be proud of his social class and status.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦੇ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
braham binde so braahaman hoee |1|
He alone is a Brahmin, who knows God. ||1||
ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
jaat kaa garab na kar moorakh gavaaraa |
Do not be proud of your social class and status, you ignorant fool!
ਇਸੁ ਗਰਬ ਤੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eis garab te chaleh bahut vikaaraa |1| rahaau |
So much sin and corruption comes from this pride. ||1||Pause||
ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਨ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
chaare varan aakhai sabh koee |
Everyone says that there are four castes, four social classes.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
braham bind te sabh opat hoee |2|
They all emanate from the drop of God's Seed. ||2||
ਮਾਟੀ ਏਕ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
maattee ek sagal sansaaraa |
The entire universe is made of the same clay.
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਘੜੈ ਕੁਮੑਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
bahu bidh bhaandde gharrai kumaaraa |3|
The Potter has shaped it into all sorts of vessels. ||3||
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਾ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥
panch tat mil dehee kaa aakaaraa |
The five elements join together, to make up the form of the human body.
ਘਟਿ ਵਧਿ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
ghatt vadh ko karai beechaaraa |4|
Who can say which is less, and which is more? ||4||
ਕਹਤੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਕਰਮ ਬੰਧੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
kehat naanak ihu jeeo karam bandh hoee |
Says Nanak, this soul is bound by its actions.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥੧॥
bin satigur bhette mukat na hoee |5|1|
Without meeting the True Guru, it is not liberated. ||5||1||

ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਹਨੇ ਕੋਪ ਉਪਜਾਈ ॥੭॥
duhoonan hane kop upajaaee |7|

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਰਾਵ ਤਨ ਭੇਦ ਜਤਾਊ ॥

bahur dtadtore nagar divaaoo |
ਦੈ ਦੁੰਦਭਿ ਪੁਨਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਬੁਲੈਹੌ ॥
dai dundabh pun tohi bulaihau |
ਕਾਮ ਭੋਗ ਰੁਚਿ ਮਾਨਿ ਮਚੈਹੌ ॥੮॥
kaam bhog ruch maan machaihau |8|

ਆਪੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੌ ਕਹੀ ਬਾਤ ਸਮੁਝਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
aap nripat sau kahee baat samujhaae kai |
ਸਿਵ ਮੋ ਕੌ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਹੌ ਆਇ ਕਰਿ ॥
siv mo kau ih bhaat kahiyo hau aae kar |
ਹੋ ਸੋ ਹਉ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤੀਰ ਕਹੌ ਅਬ ਆਇ ਕਰਿ ॥੯॥
ho so hau tumare teer kahau ab aae kar |9|

ਨਿਜੁ ਹਾਥਨ ਦੁੰਦਭੀ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥
nij haathan dundabhee bajaavai |
ਕੂਕਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਸਭ ਪੁਰਹਿ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ॥੧੦॥
kook adhik sabh pureh sunaavai |10|
ਜਬ ਤੁਮ ਐਸ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੈਯਹੁ ॥
jab tum ais sabad sun laiyahu |
ਤਬ ਉਠ ਧਾਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਐਯਹੁ ॥
tab utth dhaam hamaare aiyahu |
ਭੇਦ ਕਿਸੂ ਔਰਹਿ ਨਹਿ ਕਹਿਯਹੁ ॥
bhed kisoo aauareh neh kahiyahu |
ਭੋਗ ਸਮੌ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ਲਹਿਯਹੁ ॥੧੧॥
bhog samau triy ko bhayo lahiyahu |11|

ਪਲ੍ਰਯੋ ਪਰੋਸੋ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਤ ਮੋਹਨ ਰਖਿਯਹੁ ਨਾਮ ॥੧੨॥
palrayo paroso hoe sut mohan rakhiyahu naam |12|
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੋ ਬਚਨ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਦਿਯੋ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
yau keh kai nrip so bachan grih te diyo utthaae |
ਪਠੈ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਜਾਰ ਕੌ ਲੀਨੋ ਨਿਕਟ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੧੩॥

drirr kar bahut damaamo diyo |
ਕੂਕਿ ਕੂਕਿ ਪੁਰ ਸਕਲ ਸੁਨਾਇਸਿ ॥
kook kook pur sakal sunaaeis |
ਭੋਗ ਸਮੈ ਰਾਨੀ ਕੋ ਆਇਸਿ ॥੧੪॥

ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਰਾਜਾ ਉਠਿ ਧਯੋ ॥
bachan sunat raajaa utth dhayo |
ਭੋਗ ਸਮੋ ਰਾਨੀ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ॥
bhog samo raanee ko bhayo |
ਜੋ ਸਿਵ ਬਚਨ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੈ ॥
jo siv bachan kahiyo so hvai hai |
ਪਰਿਯੋ ਪਰੋਸੋ ਸੁਤ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਦੈ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
pariyo paroso sut grih dai hai |15|
ਆਵਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਜਾਰ ਡਰਪਾਨੋ ॥
aavat nripat jaar ddarapaano |
ਰਾਨੀ ਸੋ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥
raanee so yau bachan bakhaano |
ਨਿਰਾਪ੍ਰਾਧ ਮੋ ਕੌ ਤੈ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
niraapraadh mo kau tai maariyo |
ਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਤੋਰਿ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੬॥
mai triy kachh na tor bigaariyo |16|
ਸਿਵ ਬਚ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਤਹਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਗਯੋ ॥
siv bach simar tahaa nrip gayo |
ਭੋਗ ਕਰਤ ਨਿਜੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੇ ਭਯੋ ॥
bhog karat nij triy se bhayo |
ਪੀਠਿ ਫੇਰਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੋ ਜਬ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
peetth fer grih ko jab dhaayo |
ਤਬ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਆਪਨੋ ਜਾਰ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥੧੭॥
