Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
jeh dekhaa teh deen deaalaa |
Wherever I look, I see the Lord, merciful to the meek.
ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲਾ ॥
aae na jaaee prabh kirapaalaa |
God is compassionate; He does not come or go in reincarnation.
ਜੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
jeea andar jugat samaaee rahio niraalam raaeaa |1|
He pervades all beings in His mysterious way; the Sovereign Lord remains detached. ||1||
ਜਗੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
jag tis kee chhaaeaa jis baap na maaeaa |
The world is a reflection of Him; He has no father or mother.
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭੈਣ ਨ ਭਰਾਉ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
naa tis bhain na bharaau kamaaeaa |
He has not acquired any sister or brother.
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਜਾਤੀ ਓਹੁ ਅਜਰਾਵਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
naa tis opat khapat kul jaatee ohu ajaraavar man bhaaeaa |2|
There is no creation or destruction for Him; He has no ancestry or social status. The Ageless Lord is pleasing to my mind. ||2||
ਤੂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲਾ ॥
too akaal purakh naahee sir kaalaa |
You are the Deathless Primal Being. Death does not hover over Your head.
ਤੂ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲੇਖ ਅਗੰਮ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
too purakh alekh agam niraalaa |
You are the unseen inaccessible and detached Primal Lord.
ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਤਿ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
sat santokh sabad at seetal sehaj bhaae liv laaeaa |3|
You are true and content; the Word of Your Shabad is cool and soothing. Through it, we are lovingly, intuitively attuned to You. ||3||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਵਰਤਾਇ ਚਉਥੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
trai varataae chauthai ghar vaasaa |
The three qualities are pervasive; the Lord dwells in His home, the fourth state.
ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਕੀਏ ਇਕ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਾ ॥
kaal bikaal kee ik graasaa |
He has made death and birth into a bite of food.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
niramal jot sarab jagajeevan gur anahad sabad dikhaaeaa |4|
The immaculate Light is the Life of the whole world. The Guru reveals the unstruck melody of the Shabad. ||4||
ਊਤਮ ਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
aootam jan sant bhale har piaare |
Sublime and good are those humble Saints, the Beloveds of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
har ras maate paar utaare |
They are intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord, and are carried across to the other side.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੇਣ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
naanak ren sant jan sangat har gur parasaadee paaeaa |5|
Nanak is the dust of the Society of the Saints; by Guru's Grace, he finds the Lord. ||5||
ਤੂ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜੀਅ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
too antarajaamee jeea sabh tere |
You are the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. All beings belong to You.
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਮ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
too daataa ham sevak tere |
You are the Great Giver; I am Your slave.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਦੀਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
amrit naam kripaa kar deejai gur giaan ratan deepaaeaa |6|
Please be merciful and bless me with Your Ambrosial Naam, and the jewel, the lamp of the Guru's spiritual wisdom. ||6||
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਕੀਆ ॥
panch tat mil ihu tan keea |
From the union of the five elements, this body was made.
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮ ਪਾਏ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਆ ॥
aatam raam paae sukh theea |
Finding the Lord, the Supreme Soul, peace is established.
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
karam karatoot amrit fal laagaa har naam ratan man paaeaa |7|
The good karma of past actions brings fruitful rewards, and man is blessed with the jewel of the Lord's Name. ||7||
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
naa tis bhookh piaas man maaniaa |
His mind does not feel any hunger or thirst.
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
sarab niranjan ghatt ghatt jaaniaa |
He knows the Immaculate Lord to be everywhere, in each and every heart.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
amrit ras raataa keval bairaagee guramat bhaae subhaaeaa |8|
Imbued with the Lord's Ambrosial essence, he becomes a pure, detached renunciate; he is lovingly absorbed in the Guru's Teachings. ||8||
ਅਧਿਆਤਮ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
adhiaatam karam kare din raatee |
Whoever does the deeds of the soul, day and night,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
niramal jot nirantar jaatee |
sees the immaculate Divine Light deep within.
ਸਬਦੁ ਰਸਾਲੁ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਬੇਣੁ ਰਸਾਲੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
sabad rasaal rasan ras rasanaa ben rasaal vajaaeaa |9|
Enraptured with the delightful essence of the Shabad, the source of nectar, my tongue plays the sweet music of the flute. ||9||
ਬੇਣੁ ਰਸਾਲ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
ben rasaal vajaavai soee |
He alone plays the sweet music of this flute,
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
jaa kee tribhavan sojhee hoee |
who knows the three worlds.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
naanak boojhahu ih bidh guramat har raam naam liv laaeaa |10|
O Nanak, know this, through the Guru's Teachings, and lovingly focus yourself on the Lord's Name. ||10||
ਐਸੇ ਜਨ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
aise jan virale sansaare |
Rare are those beings in this world,
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥
gurasabad veechaareh raheh niraare |
who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and remain detached.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰਹਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
aap tareh sangat kul taareh tin safal janam jag aaeaa |11|
They save themselves, and save all their associates and ancestors; fruitful is their birth and coming into this world. ||11||
ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
ghar dar mandar jaanai soee |
He alone knows the home of his own heart, and the door to the temple,
ਜਿਸੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
jis poore gur te sojhee hoee |
who obtains perfect understanding from the Guru.
ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜ ਮਹਲ ਮਹਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਖਤੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥
kaaeaa garr mehal mahalee prabh saachaa sach saachaa takhat rachaaeaa |12|
In the body-fortress is the palace; God is the True Master of this Palace. The True Lord established His True Throne there. ||12||
ਚਤੁਰ ਦਸ ਹਾਟ ਦੀਵੇ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਖੀ ॥
chatur das haatt deeve due saakhee |
The fourteen realms and the two lamps are the witnesses.
ਸੇਵਕ ਪੰਚ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਚਾਖੀ ॥
sevak panch naahee bikh chaakhee |
The Lord's servants, the self-elect, do not taste the poison of corruption.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥
antar vasat anoop niramolak gur miliai har dhan paaeaa |13|
Deep within, is the priceless, incomparable commodity; meeting with the Guru, the wealth of the Lord is obtained. ||13||
ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਖਤੈ ਕੀ ਲਾਇਕ ॥
takhat bahai takhatai kee laaeik |
He alone sits on the throne, who is worthy of the throne.
ਪੰਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਕ ॥
panch samaae guramat paaeik |
Following the Guru's Teachings, he subdues the five demons, and becomes the Lord's foot soldier.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
aad jugaadee hai bhee hosee sahasaa bharam chukaaeaa |14|
He has existed from the very beginning of time and throughout the ages; He exists here and now, and will always exist. Meditating on Him, skepticism and doubt are dispelled. ||14||
ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
takhat salaam hovai din raatee |
The Lord of the Throne is greeted and worshipped day and night.
ਇਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
eihu saach vaddaaee guramat liv jaatee |
This true glorious greatness comes to those who love the Guru's Teachings.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੧॥੧੮॥
naanak raam japahu tar taaree har ant sakhaaee paaeaa |15|1|18|
O Nanak, meditate on the Lord, and swim across the river; they find the Lord, their best friend, in the end. ||15||1||18||

ਲੋਕ ਚਤ੍ਰਦਸ ਬਿਖੈ ਤੁਹੀ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
lok chatradas bikhai tuhee sundaree nihaaree |
ਹੋ ਰੂਪਮਾਨ ਨਲ ਰਾਜ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਬਰੋ ਪ︀ਯਾਰੀ ॥੧੧॥

ਪਤਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਬਾਚਤ ਤੁਮ ਹ︀ਯਾਂ ਉਠਿ ਆਇਯੈ ॥

ਹੋ ਨਿਜੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਜਾਇਯੈ ॥੧੩॥

ਹੰਸ ਉਹਾ ਤੇ ਉਡਿਯੋ ਤਹਾ ਆਵਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
hans uhaa te uddiyo tahaa aavat bhayo |
ਦਮਵੰਤ੍ਰਯਹਿ ਸੰਦੇਸ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਲ ਕੌ ਦਯੋ ॥
damavantrayeh sandes nripat nal kau dayo |
ਨਲ ਪਤਿਯਾ ਕੌ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਸੋ ਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
nal patiyaa kau rahiyo hridai so laae kai |
ਹੋ ਜੋਰਿ ਸੈਨ ਤਿਤ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਬਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੧੪॥

ਸੁਨਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਚ ਹੰਸ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਮੋਦ ਬਢਾਇ ॥
sun raajaa bach hans ke man mai mod badtaae |
ਬਿਦ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਸ ਕੌ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਢੋਲ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਬਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥

gandhrab jachh bhujang sabhai chal teh ge |
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਅਰ ਸੂਰਜ ਪਹੁਚੇ ਆਇ ਕਰਿ ॥
eindr chandr ar sooraj pahuche aae kar |
ਹੋ ਧਨਧਿਈਸ ਜਲਿ ਰਾਵ ਬਦਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਜਾਇ ਕਰਿ ॥੧੭॥
ho dhanadhiees jal raav baditr bajaae kar |17|
ਨਲ ਹੀ ਕੋ ਧਰਿ ਰੂਪ ਸਕਲ ਚਲਿ ਤਹ ਗਏ ॥
nal hee ko dhar roop sakal chal teh ge |
ਨਲ ਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੂਤ ਪਠਾਵਤ ਤਹ ਭਏ ॥
nal ko kar har doot patthaavat teh bhe |
ਸੁਨਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਰ ਏ ਬਚਨ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਤਹ ਧਾਇ ਕਰਿ ॥
sun nrip bar e bachan chaliyo teh dhaae kar |
ਹੋ ਕਿਨੀ ਨ ਹਟਕਿਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਹੂਚ︀ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ਕਰਿ ॥੧੮॥
ho kinee na hattakiyo taeh pahoochayo jaae kar |18|
ਦਮਵੰਤੀ ਛਬਿ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਰੀਝਤ ਭਈ ॥
damavantee chhab nirakh adhik reejhat bhee |
ਜੁ ਕਛੁ ਹੰਸ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਸਭ ਸਾਚੀ ਭਈ ॥
ju kachh hans kahiyo su sabh saachee bhee |
ਜਾ ਦਿਨ ਮੈ ਯਾ ਕੋ ਪਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਇ ਹੌ ॥
jaa din mai yaa ko pat kar kar paae hau |
ਹੋ ਤਦਿਨ ਘਰੀ ਕੇ ਸਖੀ ਸਹਿਤ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਇ ਹੌ ॥੧੯॥
ho tadin gharee ke sakhee sahit bal jaae hau |19|
ਮਨ ਮੈ ਇਹੈ ਦਮਵੰਤੀ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
man mai ihai damavantee mantr bichaariyo |
ਸਭਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
sabhahin ke baitthe ih bhaat uchaariyo |
ਸੁਨੋ ਸਕਲ ਜਨ ਇਹੈ ਭੀਮਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਨ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥
suno sakal jan ihai bheemajaa pran kariyo |
ਹੋ ਜੋ ਤੁਮ ਮੈ ਨਲ ਰਾਵ ਵਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਬਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੦॥
ho jo tum mai nal raav vahai kar pat bariyo |20|
ਫੂਕ ਬਦਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਸਕਲ ਘਰ ਕੌ ਗਏ ॥
fook badan hvai nripat sakal ghar kau ge |
ਕਲਿਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਜੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਭਏ ॥
kalijugaad je hute dukhit chit mai bhe |
ਨਲਹਿ ਭੀਮਜਾ ਬਰੀ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
naleh bheemajaa baree adhik sukh paae kai |
ਹੋ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਾਦਿਤ੍ਰ ਅਨੇਕ ਬਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੨੧॥
ho bhaat bhaat baaditr anek bajaae kai |21|
ਧਰਿ ਪੁਹਕਰਿ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਤਹਾ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਗਯੋ ॥
dhar puhakar ko roop tahaa kalijug gayo |
ਜਬ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਨਲ ਬ︀ਯਾਹਿ ਸਦਨ ਲ︀ਯਾਵਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
jab taa kau nal bayaeh sadan layaavat bhayo |
ਖੇਲਿ ਜੂਪ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਇਯੋ ॥
khel joop bahu bhaatin taeh haraaeiyo |
ਹੋ ਰਾਜ ਪਾਟ ਨਲ ਬਨ ਕੌ ਜੀਤਿ ਪਠਾਇਯੋ ॥੨੨॥

ਰਾਜ ਪਾਟ ਨਲ ਜਬ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਹਰਾਇਯੋ ॥
raaj paatt nal jab ih bhaat haraaeiyo |
ਬਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਅਜੁਧਿਆ ਆਇਯੋ ॥

ਭੀਮ ਸੁਤਾ ਬਿਨ ਨਾਥ ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇਯੋ ॥
bheem sutaa bin naath adhik dukh paaeiyo |
ਕਹ ਲਗਿ ਕਰੌ ਬਖ︀ਯਾਨ ਨ ਜਾਤ ਬਤਾਇਯੋ ॥
keh lag karau bakhayaan na jaat bataaeiyo |
ਨਲ ਰਾਜ ਕੇ ਬਿਰਹਿ ਬਾਲ ਬਿਰਹਿਨਿ ਭਈ ॥
nal raaj ke bireh baal birahin bhee |
ਹੋ ਸਹਰਿ ਚੰਦੇਰੀ ਮਾਝ ਵਹੈ ਆਵਤ ਭਈ ॥੨੪॥

ਭੀਮਸੈਨ ਤਿਨ ਹਿਤ ਜਨ ਬਹੁ ਪਠਵਤ ਭਏ ॥

ਦਮਵੰਤੀ ਕਹ ਖੋਜਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਲੈ ਗਏ ॥

ਵਹੈ ਜੁ ਇਹ ਲੈ ਗਯੋ ਦਿਜ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਠਾਇਯੋ ॥
